Description

A PACKAGING ARRANGEMENT FOR THE "FOUR SPECIES"
PLANTS
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to the field of plant packaging. More particularly, the present invention relates to the packaging of living branches of the "four species" plants.
Background of the Invention
The plants of the "four species" (branches of Lulav, Hadass and Aravah; and fruit of Etrog) are used in a special blessing during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Every time the blessing is repeated, for seven days during the Sukkot holiday, each worshiper must have the "four species" in hand, in a fresh condition. A typical size for the branches of the "four species" (Hadass and Aravah) is about 40cm, leading to a requirement for a special casing which will protect the branches.
In order to keep the plants from drying out, the branches of the plants Hadass and Aravah are usually carried inside a moist towel, or a similar water-absorbing material, as humidity helps to preserve their freshness. The Lulav branch (longer than Hadass and Aravah) and the Etrog fruit are usually carried in separate individual cases. To prolong the fresh state of the branches, a different method of keeping the moisture is required.
Prior art container cases for plants have a soil and water supply for living plants, allowing them to continue growing inside the case. Whereas the branches of the "four species" plants require a different environment, which preserves the humidity.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a case to hold the branches of the plants of the "four species". It is an additional object of the present invention to provide a case that will keep the moisture of its content.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear as the description proceeds.
Summary of the Invention
The present invention is a packaging arrangement for the "four species" plants comprising a two layered container case having an outer layer and an inner layer, wherein the outer layer of the case is a plastic-like material, sealing the case, and the inner layer is a water absorbing material.
In one embodiment of the present invention, the container case has a length of at least 30cm.
In an additional embodiment of the present invention, the outer layer of the container case has one or more ventilation holes.
In an additional embodiment of the present invention, the container case has a carrying handle.
In an additional embodiment of the present invention, the container case has a carrying shoulder strap.
In an additional embodiment of the present invention, the container case is sealed with a zipper.
In an additional embodiment of the present invention, the container case is sealed with Velcro.
In an additional embodiment of the present invention, the container case holds the Hadass and Aravah branches with the case being completely sealed. In a further embodiment of the present invention, the container case also holds the Lulav branch with the tip of the Lulav branch being outside of the case.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the water absorbing material can be fabric, sponge or superabsorbent polymers. For example, the superabsorbent polymers can be made using one of the following methods: gel polymerization, suspension polymerization or solution polymerization.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the packaging arrangement further comprises a padded storgae arrangement attached externally to the case (i.e., to the outer layer), wherein the storage arrangement is adapted for accommodating an Etrog fruit.
All the above and other characteristics and advantages of the invention will be further understood through the following illustrative and non-limitative description of embodiments thereof, with reference to the appended drawings.
Brief Description of the Drawings
— Fig. 1 shows the four species, with branches of Lulav, Hadass and Aravah and an Etrog fruit;
— Fig. 2 schematically illustrates a sealed container case for the "four species";
— Fig. 3 schematically illustrates an open container case, with a towel like padding in the interior;
— Figs. 4 A and 4B schematically illustrate additional embodiments for carrying the container case; and
— Fig. 5 schematically illustrates a cross-sectional view of the container case with the Hadass and Aravah branches inside. Detailed Description of the Invention
Fig. 1 shows the four species, with branches of Lulav (1), Hadass (3) and Aravah (2) and fruit of Etrog (4). Their average height being of Lulav (1) at about 35-45cm, of Hadass (3) and Aravah (2) at about 25-35cm; and the fruit of Etrog (4) at about 8cm.
Fig. 2 schematically illustrates a packaging arrangement for carrying at least the Hadass and Aravah branches of the "four species" plants, according to an embodiment of the present invention. The packaging arrangement comprising a two layered container case (5) having an outer layer (10) and an inner layer (20), wherein the outer layer (10) is a plasticlike material adapted for sealing the case (5), and the inner layer (20) is a layer that is made of or includes a water absorbing material.
The full length of the branches is contained inside the carrying case (5), e.g., with height of about 40cm and thickness of about 2cm. The outer layer (10) of the case (5) is a plastic-like material providing a sealed environment for the branches inside which can be closed with a fastening element such as a zipper (7). When the carrying case is sealed with the branches inside, a confined environment is created and the branches will be protected.
In an additional embodiment, the outer layer (10) of the case (5) has one or more ventilation holes that can be deployed all around the case.
Fig. 3 schematically illustrates an open container case (6) with the zipper (7) open. The interior of the case (6) has a water-absorbing material as padding in the inner layer (20), which also protects the branches from physical damage. Any residue of water in the case is absorbed by the water absorbing material, allowing the interior to preserve a humid state in the confined environment of the sealed outer layer (10). The water absorbing material can be superabsorbent polymers, sponge, cellulosic or fiber-based products such as fabric. For example, the superabsorbent polymers can be made by using one of the following methods: gel polymerization, suspension polymerization or solution polymerization.
Fig. 4A schematically illustrates an additional embodiment for carrying the container case (5) with a handle (8) attached. Fig. 4B schematically illustrates an additional embodiment for carrying the container case (5) with a shoulder strap (9) attached.
Fig. 5 schematically illustrates a cross-sectional view of the container case (5) with the Hadass (3) and Aravah (2) branches inside. It is also possible to carry the Lulav branch in the case (5) if needed, however since the Lulav branch is longer than the case (5) the zipper will not close completely and the tip of the Lulav branch will stay on the outside. Alternatively, the case (5) can be provided in different lengths such that it will fit also the length of the Lulav branch, which in some cases can be higher than 45cm.
In order to allow a user to carry the "four species" together in a single case, the packaging arrangement further comprises a padded storage arrangement (not shown) that is adapted for accommodating an Etrog fruit. The padded storage arrangement can be attached externally to the case (i.e., to its outer layer). The padded pocket-like arrangement is used not only to carry the Etrog fruit together with the Aravah, Hadass and Lulav, but also to protect it from damages.
Although embodiments of the invention have been described by way of illustration, it will be understood that the invention may be carried out with many variations, modifications, and adaptations, without exceeding the scope of the claims.
