- the cube 64 represented on the home screen 60 corresponds to a home cube, or top level cube, of a hierarchical structure that includes a
- each side 66, 68, 70 of the home cube 64 relates to a different feed file, such as a feed file associated with a newspaper, a feed file associated with a science magazine, a feed file associated with a TV station, and so on.
- Each side 66, 68, 70 of the home cube 64 includes graphical indicia representative of the feed file with which the side is associated, and in this way, in this example, each side of the home cube 64 is not mapped to an item of content but rather serves to allow a user to select the type of content that the user wishes to view. Selection of a cube side corresponding to the content desired to be viewed by the user causes a sub-cube 72 to be displayed as shown in Figure 4.
- the sub-cube 72 includes a plurality of tiles 73, each of which is associated with a different item of content derived from the feed file corresponding to the selected side of the home cube 64.
- a side of the home cube 64 relating to a science magazine has been selected and as a consequence all tiles of the sub-cube 72 relate to items of content derived from the science magazine feed file.
- Each side of the sub-cube 72 may relate to a different category of content.
- the mapping relationships between the tiles 73 and the items of content are defined in the content file.
- Each tile 73 has an associated image 74, and associated text 75 that is representative of the item of content mapped to the tile 73, for example an article heading.
- the science magazine feed file is obtained using location information, for example a URL address of the feed file, contained in the content file downloaded from the content server 28.
- the feed file associated with the science magazine is produced by the RSS converter 32, the RSS converter 32 converting an RSS content feed obtained from a science magazine source 12 to a feed file that is in a format usable by the user interface 50.
- the RSS content feed contains information indicative of the locations of current items of content created by the operators of the science magazine source 12.
- the RSS feed extractor 30 is configured to extract the RSS content feed at regular intervals, such as every 30 minutes.
- multiple home 3D shapes in this example cubes, may be provided, with each home shape relating to a different subject matter category, such as news, video, social, and so on, and each home shape being associated with multiple feed files.
- a home screen displayed to a user may allow the user to select an icon representative of one of the home shapes from a plurality of such icons in order to display the selected home shape.
- the content presented to a user and the hierarchical structure of the cubes presented to a user by the user interface 50 are modifiable by a user, in this example by selecting an edit button 76.
- Selection of the edit button 76 causes an edit screen 80 to be displayed, as shown in Figure 5.
- the edit screen 80 displays a cube, in this example a home cube 64, although it will be understood that other cubes, such as a sub-cube of the hierarchical cube structure, are also capable of being edited and therefore may also be displayed.
- the edit screen 80 also includes a feed directory 82 that identifies feeds 84 that are available for mapping to the home cube 64. Each of the feeds 84 in the feed directory 84 is related to a feed file and is available for
- Selection of a feed 84 may be made by dragging the feed 84, for example using a mouse or a suitable touch gesture, to the desired side of the home cube 64.
- graphical indicia representative of the selected feed 84 is added to the selected side of the home cube.
- the feed may be removed by dragging between the cube side and the feed directory 82.
- the number of tiles on a side of the 3D shape 26 may change automatically according to the number of tiles present on the side. For example, if a side includes 9 tiles and an additional tile is added to the side using the edit screen 80, the side may be modified so as to include 16 tiles, 10 of which are mapped to items of content and 6 of which are available for mapping to items of content. Alternatively, adding of an additional tile to a side having no free tiles may cause the shape to change for example from a cube to a cuboid in order to accommodate the newly added tile. It will also be appreciated that the size and/or shape of tiles on a side of the 3D shape may change automatically, or under control of a user, so that the tiles fill the available space on the side of the 3D shape.
- one or more of the tiles may be automatically resized so that the tiles together fill the available space on the side of the 3D shape.
- the system may be arranged so as to automatically increase the size of a tile corresponding to selected content, such as a feature or headline article, irrespective of whether all tiles have been mapped to items of content. It will be understood that by using the edit screen 80 it is possible for a user to customize the feeds that will be mapped to the home cube 64, or sub-cubes 72, associated with the user, and to customize the sides that are desired to be associated with the feeds 84.
- each side 66, 68, 70 of the home cube 64 is mapped to a single feed file such that
- feeds 84 may be added to a side of the home cube 64 with each feed 64 mapped to a
- selection of a tile causes a sub-cube 72 dedicated to the feed file and mapped to the tile to be displayed.
- the user interface 50 communicates with the content server 28 and modifies the content file associated with the user to reflect the feed files now associated with the user and/or the new mapping relationships between sides/tiles of the cube and items of content.
- each of the sub-cubes 72 may also be modified in a similar way, for example so as to add links to new feed files and thereby new sources of content by adding a new tile to a side of the sub-cube 72.
- Each of the newly added tiles associated with a new feed file would in this example have an associated sub-cube 72 that is displayed in response to selection of the new tile by a user.
- the sub-cube 72 may be edited so as to change the location and/or types of categories mapped to the cub-cube 72.
- a user is the able to rotate the home cube 64, for example using a touch gesture or a keyboard and/or mouse, in order to view and/or select one of the sides that corresponds to a feed desired to be viewed by the user.
- Selection of a side causes a sub-cube 72 relating to the desired feed and including tiles 73 mapped to particular items of content to be displayed.
- the user is then able to rotate the sub-cube 72 in order to select a tile 73 associated with content desired to be viewed.
- Selection of a tile 73 causes content, in this particular example an article 90, related to the selected tile to be displayed, as shown in Figure 6. It will be understood that the article 90 is derived directly from the content source 12 using the content location information in the feed file associated with the user's content file.
- a gesture such as a double tap, or a double click, on a centre tile may cause the side corresponding to the tile to align centrally.
- a zoom function may be applied, for example using a 2 finger pinch/spread gesture, as shown in Figure 8; a pan function may be applied by swiping with 2 fingers; the cube can be made to rotate about a selected point by touching the cube, and at the same time swiping in a desired direction of rotation using another finger; or any other type of manipulation.
- the present system 10 provides a user with an interface that is simple to use and enables a user to quickly locate content desired to be viewed merely by rotating the 3D shape 26 and selecting desired content categories and items of content by selecting a side and/or tile of the 3D shape. While the present embodiments are described in relation to locating and selecting content such as text, audio, video or images to be viewed by a user, it will be understood that the system may in addition or alternatively be used to easily locate and make selections for other purposes, such as selection of applications to open; selection of text, audio, video or images to be opened in another application; selection of a website to open, for example wherein a tile is mapped to a URL associated with a web page; selection of content sources from a social

embodiment of the present invention; and
Figures 3 to 8 are diagrammatic representations of screen views of the user interface shown in Figure 2.
Description of an Embodiment of the Invention
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown a content delivery system 10 arranged to communicate with and receive content for delivery to one or more users from at least one content source 12. In this example, the content delivery system 10 communicates with the content sources 12 through a communications network, such as the Internet 13, although it will be understood that any suitable communications arrangement is envisaged.
The content delivery system 10 includes a user interface 50 arranged to present user selectable content identifiers to a user, facilitate selection by a user of desired content by selecting a content identifier, and instigate display of the selected content to the user.
The user interface 50 may be implemented by any suitable computing device capable of executing programs, displaying information to a user and receiving inputs from the user. For example, the computing device on which the user interface is implemented may comprise a tablet computer 14 or a smart phone 16, each of which includes a touch screen capable of receiving inputs from a user, or a personal computer 18 having a keyboard 20 and mouse 22.
The user interface 50 comprises a virtual 3 dimensional shape 26 that is rotatable in at least 2 directions by interacting with a touch screen, for example by a user applying a suitable swipe gesture to the touch screen, and/or using a keyboard 20 and/or mouse 22. The 3D shape 26 includes several sides and a side may be divided into
several tiles. Each side of the 3D shape and/or each tile on a side is associated with at least one link to audio, video, text and/or image based content. In the present example, the 3D shape is a representation of a cube having 9 tiles on each face of the cube, with each tile
associated with different content, and content being viewable by selecting the tile associated with the content, for example using the touch screen or mouse. In this way, each tile constitutes a user selectable content identifier.
In this example, each of the computing devices 14, 16, 18 communicates with a content server 28 arranged to extract data indicative of content links from the content sources 12 and make the content links available to the user interface 50 in a format usable by the user interface. In this example, each content source 12 is of a type arranged to provide content link information indicative of the location of content associated with the content source, for example at a URL location, in an RSS feed.
It will be understood that an RSS feed is a feed format that may be used to publish content on-line. An RSS feed is written in XML format, and typically may include full or summarized text, heading text, URL addresses indicative of the location of on-line available content, and metadata such as publishing dates and authorship.
The communication path between the computing devices 14, 16, 18 and the content server 28 may comprise wired and/or wireless communications arrangements, although it will be understood that any suitable communications arrangement is envisaged . The content server 28 includes an RSS feed extractor 30 arranged to extract defined RSS content feeds from the content sources 12, for example periodically such as every
30 minutes. The RSS content feeds to be extracted may be pre-defined or at least some of the content feeds may be selected by a user such that the content accessible to the user using the 3D shape 26 is customizable by the user, as described in more detail below.
The content server 28 also includes an RSS converter 32 arranged to extract information from each RSS content feed and produce for each RSS content feed a feed file that defines content available from a content source 12 in a format usable by the user interface 50. The feed file also includes default values usable to associate sides and/or tiles of the 3D shape 26 with individual content links .
In this example, the feed file is an XML file including information indicative of each side and tile of a 3D shape, for example in the form of a side or tile
identifying number; a subject matter title for each side of the 3D shape; a content title, such as an article title, for each tile; the URL address associated with each item of content; and the URL address of an image
representative of each item of content, for example a thumbnail image representative of the item of content. An example feed file is shown in Appendix A.
It will be understood that a 3D shape 26 may be associated with one feed file such that each side of a 3D shape 26 is associated with one or more item of content derived from the feed file, such as one or more article.
Alternatively, the 3D shape 26 may have multiple
associated feed files, with each feed file for example being associated with one side of the 3D shape 26. With the latter example, in one implementation, each side of the 3D shape 26 may be associated with a further 3D shape such that a hierarchical content structure is
defined. For example, a home top level 3D shape has each side associated with a different content source 12 and thereby a different feed file, and the user interface 50 is arranged such that selection of one of the sides of the home top level 3D shape causes a new second level 3D shape to be displayed. The second level 3D shape is associated with a particular feed file and each side of the second level 3D shape has several tiles associated with
respective articles related to particular items of content from a content source 12.
The example feed file shown in Appendix A relates to a second level cube 3D shape associated with a news content source. Each side of the cube is associated with a different subject matter heading, such as 'Top Stories', 'Asia-Pacific News', 'Europe News', and so on, and multiple items of content are associated with each side of the cube. For example, 4 items of content are respectively associated with 4 tiles on a first side of the cube, 8 items of content are respectively associated with 8 tiles on a second side of the cube, and so on.
Each user has an associated content file particular to the user that defines the hierarchical structure of the 3D shapes 26 presented to the user, and the types and locations of content derived from the feed files that are to be presented to the user on the 3D shape (s) . In this example, the content file is XML based. The content file is used by the user interface 50 to associate tiles of the 3D shape 26 with items of content defined in one or more feed files.
An example content file is shown in Appendix B. The content file is an XML file including information
indicative of feed files that have been included in the content file by default or have been selected by a user. The content file also includes mapping information
indicative of mapping relationships between items of content derived from the feed files and sides/tiles of each 3D shape in the hierarchical menu structure. The mapping information may specify the particular tile on the 3D shape 26 to which a particular item of content is to be mapped, and the effect of this is to override default mapping information or mapping information contained in the feed file for a 3D shape 26. The content file is downloaded to a user interface from the content server 28, for example when the user interface 50 is activated on a computing device 14, 16, 18. For this purpose, the content server 28 includes a data server application 34. The data server application 34 may also be used to download the feed file(s) referred to in the content file to the user interface, for example after the required feed files have been identified in the downloaded content file. The content server 28 also includes a login application 36 arranged to carry out user authentication tasks, in particular to verify username and password details prior to allowing a user interface to access the content server 28. Verification of a user also serves to ensure that the correct content file associated with the user is
downloaded to the user interface 50.
The content server 28 is connected to a data storage device 40 arranged to store content files associated with a plurality of users, and login details 44 associated with the users and used by the login application 36 to verify the identity of the users.
Operative components of the user interface 50 are shown in Figure 2. In this example, the operative components are implemented using software that interacts with hardware of the associated computing device. However, it will be
understood that other implementations that at least partially include dedicated hardware are possible.
The operative components include an XML download
application 52 arranged to communicate with the content server 28 and cause the data server application 34 to serve a content file associated with a user to the requesting computing device 14, 16, 18. The operative components also include an XML parser 54 arranged to parse the downloaded content file, and a cube populator 56 arranged to map sides and tiles of the 3D shape 26 to items of content derived from the feed files that are associated with the content file.
The operative components also include a display controller 58 arranged to interface with display hardware components of the computing device 14, 16, 18 in order to cause the 3D shape 26 to be shown on a display of the computing device 14, 16, 18. The display controller 58 may also be arranged to interface with user control arrangements of the computing device 14, 16, 18 so that inputs received from a user, for example to control rotation of the 3D shape 26 or to select a side or time of the 3D shape, are detected and the displayed 3D shape 26 modified
accordingly .
In the present example, the components of the user interface 50 are implemented using a unity3 platform produced by Unity Technologies to create the 3D shape with additional javascript code to govern mapping relationships between sides and tiles of the 3D shape and items of content, although it will be understood that any suitable arrangement is envisaged.
An example implementation with reference to screens displayed to a user by a computing device 14, 16, 18 is
shown in Figures 3 to 8.
As shown in Figure 3, a home screen 60 is displayed to a user when the user interface 50 is activated by the user, for example by selecting an application icon on a touch screen or using a keyboard and mouse.
In this example, the computing device on which the user interface 50 is implemented is a tablet computer 14 having a touch screen overlaid on a display device. As such, inputs to the computing device are primarily effected by touching the touch screen using taps, swipes and any other device recognizable gestures. However, it will be understood that the example is equally applicable to implementations on other computing devices, the main difference being that the controls used to effect control of the user interface are different.
Also in this example, the 3D shape 26 presented to a user is a cube 64, although it will be understood that other shapes are envisaged. For example, the 3D shape may be any suitable regular or non-regular polygon, the important aspect being that the 3D shape is rotatable by a user and each side of the 3D shape has one or more selectable content identifiers such that an entire side is selectable or at least one tile on each side is selectable in order to display an item of content.
The home screen 60 includes a home navigation button 62 that appears on all screens and is usable to navigate back to the home screen 60, and a representation of a cube 64. The cube 64 includes 6 sides, although only first 66, second 68, and third 70 sides are shown in Figure 3. The orientation of the cube 64 may be readily changed by user input, in this example by swiping across the cube 64 in the direction of desired rotation.
When the user interface 50 is activated, the download application 52 communicates with the data server
application 34 at the content server 28 in order to cause the data server application 34 to serve a content file associated with the user to the tablet computer 14. At the tablet computer 14, the XML parser 54 extracts information from the content file, including information indicative of the locations of feed files required to populate the cube sides and tiles, and mapping information indicative of whihc tiles or sides of the cube 64 to map to items of content derived from the feed files.
In the present example, the cube 64 represented on the home screen 60 corresponds to a home cube, or top level cube, of a hierarchical structure that includes a
plurality of sub-cubes linked to the home cube 64.
In this example, each side 66, 68, 70 of the home cube 64 relates to a different feed file, such as a feed file associated with a newspaper, a feed file associated with a science magazine, a feed file associated with a TV station, and so on. Each side 66, 68, 70 of the home cube 64 includes graphical indicia representative of the feed file with which the side is associated, and in this way, in this example, each side of the home cube 64 is not mapped to an item of content but rather serves to allow a user to select the type of content that the user wishes to view. Selection of a cube side corresponding to the content desired to be viewed by the user causes a sub-cube 72 to be displayed as shown in Figure 4.
The sub-cube 72 includes a plurality of tiles 73, each of which is associated with a different item of content derived from the feed file corresponding to the selected side of the home cube 64. In this example, a side of the home cube 64 relating to a science magazine has been selected and as a consequence all tiles of the sub-cube 72
relate to items of content derived from the science magazine feed file. Each side of the sub-cube 72 may relate to a different category of content. The mapping relationships between the tiles 73 and the items of content are defined in the content file. Each tile 73 has an associated image 74, and associated text 75 that is representative of the item of content mapped to the tile 73, for example an article heading. The science magazine feed file is obtained using location information, for example a URL address of the feed file, contained in the content file downloaded from the content server 28. In this example, the feed file associated with the science magazine is produced by the RSS converter 32, the RSS converter 32 converting an RSS content feed obtained from a science magazine source 12 to a feed file that is in a format usable by the user interface 50. The RSS content feed contains information indicative of the locations of current items of content created by the operators of the science magazine source 12. In order that the items of content are kept current, the RSS feed extractor 30 is configured to extract the RSS content feed at regular intervals, such as every 30 minutes.
As an alternative, multiple home 3D shapes, in this example cubes, may be provided, with each home shape relating to a different subject matter category, such as news, video, social, and so on, and each home shape being associated with multiple feed files. With this example, a home screen displayed to a user may allow the user to select an icon representative of one of the home shapes from a plurality of such icons in order to display the selected home shape.
The content presented to a user and the hierarchical
structure of the cubes presented to a user by the user interface 50 are modifiable by a user, in this example by selecting an edit button 76. Selection of the edit button 76 causes an edit screen 80 to be displayed, as shown in Figure 5. The edit screen 80 displays a cube, in this example a home cube 64, although it will be understood that other cubes, such as a sub-cube of the hierarchical cube structure, are also capable of being edited and therefore may also be displayed.
The edit screen 80 also includes a feed directory 82 that identifies feeds 84 that are available for mapping to the home cube 64. Each of the feeds 84 in the feed directory 84 is related to a feed file and is available for
selection and thereby mapping to a side of the home cube 64. Selection of a feed 84 may be made by dragging the feed 84, for example using a mouse or a suitable touch gesture, to the desired side of the home cube 64. After selection of a feed 84, graphical indicia representative of the selected feed 84 is added to the selected side of the home cube. Similarly, if a feed 84 already mapped to a side of the cube is desired to be removed, the feed may be removed by dragging between the cube side and the feed directory 82.
It will be appreciated that the number of tiles on a side of the 3D shape 26 may change automatically according to the number of tiles present on the side.
For example, if a side has 9 available tiles but not all tiles have been mapped to items of content, one or more of the tiles may be automatically resized so that the tiles together fill the available space on the side of the 3D shape. In a further example, the system may be arranged so as to automatically increase the size of a tile corresponding to selected content, such as a feature or headline article, irrespective of whether all tiles have been mapped to items of content. It will be understood that by using the edit screen 80 it is possible for a user to customize the feeds that will be mapped to the home cube 64, or sub-cubes 72, associated with the user, and to customize the sides that are desired to be associated with the feeds 84.
In the present example, each side 66, 68, 70 of the home cube 64 is mapped to a single feed file such that
selection of a side causes a sub-cube 72 dedicated to the feed file to be displayed. However, it will be
appreciated that multiple feeds 84 may be added to a side of the home cube 64 with each feed 64 mapped to a
different tile on the selected side. In this example, selection of a tile causes a sub-cube 72 dedicated to the feed file and mapped to the tile to be displayed.
It will also be understood that after editing is complete, the user interface 50 communicates with the content server 28 and modifies the content file associated with the user to reflect the feed files now associated with the user and/or the new mapping relationships between sides/tiles of the cube and items of content.
It will also be understood that each of the sub-cubes 72 may also be modified in a similar way, for example so as to add links to new feed files and thereby new sources of content by adding a new tile to a side of the sub-cube 72. Each of the newly added tiles associated with a new feed file would in this example have an associated sub-cube 72 that is displayed in response to selection of the new tile by a user. Alternatively, for a sub-cube 72 that has sides related to different categories of content derived from a feed file, the sub-cube 72 may be edited so as to change the location and/or types of categories mapped to the cub-cube 72. During use, a user is the able to rotate the home cube 64, for example using a touch gesture or a keyboard and/or mouse, in order to view and/or select one of the sides that corresponds to a feed desired to be viewed by the user. Selection of a side causes a sub-cube 72 relating to the desired feed and including tiles 73 mapped to particular items of content to be displayed. The user is then able to rotate the sub-cube 72 in order to select a tile 73 associated with content desired to be viewed.
Selection of a tile 73 causes content, in this particular example an article 90, related to the selected tile to be displayed, as shown in Figure 6. It will be understood that the article 90 is derived directly from the content source 12 using the content location information in the feed file associated with the user's content file.
In addition to effecting rotation of a displayed cube, other operations may be performed to change the cube view using appropriate gestures or a keyboard and/or mouse. For example, as shown in Figure 7, a gesture such as a double tap, or a double click, on a centre tile may cause the side corresponding to the tile to align centrally. In addition, a zoom function may be applied, for example
using a 2 finger pinch/spread gesture, as shown in Figure 8; a pan function may be applied by swiping with 2 fingers; the cube can be made to rotate about a selected point by touching the cube, and at the same time swiping in a desired direction of rotation using another finger; or any other type of manipulation.
It will be appreciated that the present system 10 provides a user with an interface that is simple to use and enables a user to quickly locate content desired to be viewed merely by rotating the 3D shape 26 and selecting desired content categories and items of content by selecting a side and/or tile of the 3D shape. While the present embodiments are described in relation to locating and selecting content such as text, audio, video or images to be viewed by a user, it will be understood that the system may in addition or alternatively be used to easily locate and make selections for other purposes, such as selection of applications to open; selection of text, audio, video or images to be opened in another application; selection of a website to open, for example wherein a tile is mapped to a URL associated with a web page; selection of content sources from a social
networking web site or web based application such that each tile is mapped to different content from the web site or application; and so on.
In the claims which follow and in the preceding
description of the invention, except where the context requires otherwise due to express language or necessary implication, the word "comprise" or variations such as "comprises" or "comprising" is used in an inclusive sense, i.e. to specify the presence of the stated features but not to preclude the presence or addition of further features in various embodiments of the invention.
Modifications and variations as would be apparent to a skilled addressee are determined to be within the scope of the present invention.
