Abstract
A method of making a binder material suitable for the manufacture of a cBN or diamond compact comprising a hard phase, a binder phase and at least one refractory or transition element, comprises the step of mechanical alloying by high energy ball milling at least the hard phase and the refractory or transition element(s), and either mixing this mechanically alloyed material with the binder phase or additionally mechanical alloying by high energy ball milling the hard phase and refractory/transition element(s)with the binder phase, to produce a single phase binder material.
