Description
DEVICE FOR PREVENTION OF WATER DAMAGE IN CONNECTION WITH
HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES
Technical field
The present invention relates to a device for prevention of water damage caused by leaking water and water vapour in connection with household appliances.
Background
Water damage is a big problem in both one- family houses and in apartment blocks. It is very costly to take care of and may lead to that the housing unit becomes uninhabitable for a long period of time. A general cause for water damage is leaking couplings for dishwashers and damage on water conveying parts inside the dishwasher. This risk does also exist for washing machines, at the same time as the risk for water damage is substantially reduced when they are placed in wet rooms. Water leakage may occur also in connection with present-day freezers and refrigerators which may be provided with ice machines, units for production of carbonated water and similar.
The problem with water damage has occupied many designers and inventors, and according to the regulations a tray that conveys the water to the area in front of the machine is nowadays to be placed underneath a dishwasher at installation.
Thereby the water leakage is made visible whereby it hopefully can be taken care of before damage occurs. The trays have been improved and in the literature solutions are presented which comprise sensors and warning systems for drawing attention to water leakage.
There are also solutions which imply that covering hoses or outer hoses are arranged over the water couplings.
Thus, e.g. EP 0234643 Bl describes a system for prevention of flooding, comprising a covering hose which is slipped over a hose in combination with a tray provided with devices that sound the alarm at possible leakage. Further examples of trays for a washing machine combined with water alarm and sensors for detection of leakage can be found in EP 1 210 903 and US2008289664.
The known devices have in common that they catch up water underneath the dish washer or the washing machine and
simultaneously sound the alarm. As far as is known to the applicant at the time of the present application there are only solutions that catch up a possible water leakage
underneath dish washers and washing machines. At these
machines the leaking water may be warm with considerable vapour generation as a result, which in very short time may cause serious damage on surrounding carpentry etc. Vapour flows out each time one opens a dish washer, which in time may destroy surrounding carpentry. There thus exists a need for further development of the today existing protective devices against water damage in connection with washing machines of different kinds, and especially dish washers.
Summary of the invention
The object of the present invention is in the light of the above to provide a device that prevents the occurrence of water damage in connection with household appliances, which is relatively inexpensive and simple to manufacture and install.
The above and other objects are achieved with the present invention by the features that are mentioned in the
characterizing portion of claim 1.
Further developments and preferred embodiments are mentioned in the dependent claims.
Thanks to the design of the protective device an alarm is obtained at water leakage irrespective of where the leakage occurs, for example at the coupling for water to the appliance or respectively at the drainage from the appliance or in the appliance itself, at the same time as leaking water or
escaping vapour is intercepted by the device.
Brief description of the drawing The invention will be described in more detail below in connection with a on the enclosed drawing shown embodiment of the invention, whereby
Fig. 1 very schematically shows the principle for a protective device according to the invention intended for a dish washer, seen from the side, and
Fig. 2 shows the corresponding device seen from the front.
Detailed description of the invention
In the figures is thus very schematically shown an embodiment of the invention in order to illustrate the principle of the invention. Even if the following description relates to use of the device for dish washers it may of course be adapted to all kinds of household appliances that work with water.
The device according to the invention comprises a bottom tray 1 with side walls 2, 3 and a rear wall 4, intended to be placed underneath a not in more detail shown household
appliance in a herefore adapted space. For a dishwasher this space may be arranged underneath a sink unit or kitchen worktop. The device comprises further a top part 5 with a rear
wall 6 and side walls 7, 8, where the said side walls and rear wall on the top part are designed to overlap with the rear wall and side walls of the bottom tray inside of the
corresponding walls of the bottom tray, as is shown in Fig. 1 and 2.
In the rear wall 4 of the bottom tray 1 is arranged at least one covering hose 9. The covering hose is made up of a strong, tough and flexible plastic material. The free end 10 of the covering hose is adapted to fluid and vapour tightly enclose water respectively drainage couplings to the household
appliance .
According to certain regulations, leakage has to be made visible in the area in front of the appliance. The bottom tray may for this purpose be designed with a protruding flap 11, indicated with a broken line in Fig. 2, which can be attached to the base in front of the household appliance. Optionally, and which is more preferred, the bottom tray 1 comprises a front wall 12, Fig. 2, in order to prevent a minor water leakage from flowing out on the floor. In order to prevent that vapour, which for example is released when the dishwasher is opened, influences surrounding
carpentry, at least the sidewalls 7, 8 and top wall 24 of the top part show flaps 13, 14, 15, that can be folded against and attached to the edges of the surrounding carpentries . The flaps may for example be provided with melting adhesive, in order to be easily heated for fixing.
In the device according to the invention is further preferably arranged a warning and alarm system with moisture sensors, indicated at 16 on the bottom tray and at 17 on the covering hose, that react on a water leakage and warn in a desired way. Thus, light and sound alarm can be given off, and the warning
and alarm system may also via an USB-cable be connected to the Internet, the mobile and/or the fixed telecommunication network in order to send a warning message to possessors, insurance companies, security companies etc. Components being part of such a system are well known and do not constitute per se any part of the present invention, and are therefore not described in more detail.
The parts of the device are preferably manufactured from a clear, durable plastic material, corresponding to the material which today is used in those trays existing on the market, that are to be placed underneath e.g. dishwashers, washing machines, freezers with icemaking machines, etc.
The device according to the invention is easy and inexpensive to manufacture and very simple to install. It can be installed in advance, e.g. in connection with installation of a kitchen. What thereafter remains is only to connect the covering hose in a leakproof way around water and drainage couplings to the appliance .
It is to be noted that the invention is not limited to the embodiment of the invention shown on the drawing but may instead be varied within the scope of the subsequent claims .
