More particularly, the present invention relates to a herbal composition comprising extracts of plants Cassia occidentalis, Matricaria chamomilla, Ocimum basilicum and Origanum vulgare for the treatment of bloating and a method for preparation thereof.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Bloating is any abnormal general swelling, or increase in diameter of the abdominal area. As a symptom, the patient feels a full and tight abdomen, which may cause abdominal pain sometimes accompanied by increased borborygmus or more seriously the total lack of borborygmus.
Bloat occurs when pressure builds up in the stomach due to accumulation of gas, fluid or foam creating pressure on the surrounding organs. The animal experiences intense abdominal pain and breathing difficulty and can die if left untreated. Bloat is characterized by a distended, swollen- looking belly and sometimes become apparent when the animal tries to empty its stomach. Particularly seen in dogs and cats when they try to vomit or belch but aren't able to; they retch and seem restless and nauseated. They may also become short of breath as their abdomens become compressed. Some animals may act depressed or show signs of pain. In severe cases, the pressure the stomach places on blood vessels can cause irregular blood flow, abnormal heart rhythms, and shock, which can cause animals to collapse and can lead to rapid death.
Ruminant animals produce large volumes of gas during the process of digestion. This gas either is belched up or passes through the gastrointestinal tract. Bloat occurs when something interferes with gas escape from the rumen resulting in distention of the rumen. The ruminant suffering from bloat has symptoms of abnormal hypertrophy of rumen capacity, decline in feeding activity, decline in rumination behaviour, dyspnea, and the like. In acute cases, the animal dies as the swollen rumen compresses the lungs, interfering with breathing and tissue oxygenation obstructing the blood flow. Bloat has been recognized as one of the major diseases that cause large economic loss in production field of domestic animals.
The medications that have been used to treat bloating includes anti-foaming agents, antibiotics and some herbs like Brassica nigra, Ocimum basilicium, Grewia ferruginea, turmeric and Anthocephalus sp. However, it is desirable to develop a more effective biological treatment for bloat.
The present invention provides a herbal formulation prepared from Cassia occidentalis, Matricaria chamomilla, Ocimum basilicum, Origanum vulgare.
Cassia occidentalis belongs to family fabeaceae and called as kasundi in Hindi. It is found in tropical and temperate area and is very commonly seen all over. It is found every where in India. Seeds of this plant contain tannic acid, mucilage which is about 36%, stable oils that are about 2.56%. It also contains amodiene, toxalbumin and crisarobin.
This plant is kapha dosha suppressant. It has good effects on skin related ailments. It also decreases the effect of. poison. It acts as analgesic and thus helps in minimizing the pain in the body. It is also effective in convulsions. It normalizes the digestion and rectifies the secretions in the body. It tones up the respiratory tract. It is also effective in pyrexia. It is used for skin disease, convulsions and fits, respiratory tract disorder, urine disorder, fever.
Reference is made to "Tropical plant database- Fedegoso (Cassia occidentalis)" , wherein it has been disclosed that the leaves and roots of Cassia occidentalis are used as a remedy for bacterial and fungal infections are also shown to boost "immune function". The leaves/roots are an ingredients of many popular herbal liver tonics and medicines for liver disorders. It is also used for the treatment of abscesses, insect bites, scorpion sting, constipation, diabeties, oedema, fever, inflammation, itch, rheumatism, ringworm, scabies, skin diseases, snakebite and wounds.
Matricaria chamomilla or German chamomile also commonly called as chamomile. It grows as a weed all over dry parts of India. Chamomile is used for peptic ulcer, nervous dyspepsia, travel sickness, nasal catarrh, restlessness, and mild sleep disorders. It is used for hemorrhoids, mastitis, boils, burns, leg ulcers, eczema and irritations of the skin, skin care (most skin-types), acne, and mucosa anywhere in the body. It is good for allergies, colds, fever, sore gums, sore throats, bronchitis, inflamed skin conditions, earache, wounds, menstrual pain, premenstrual syndrome, headache, insomnia, nervous tension and other stress related disorders. It has a very low toxicity; therefore it is useful for children. Chamomile flowers are recommended as a tonic in dropsical complaints for their diuretic and tonic properties, and are also combined with diaphoretics and other stimulants with advantage. It is used in the treatment of anxiety and nervous tension, for the relief of spasmodic pain such as dysmenorrhoea or migraine, and is a safe remedy for children's problems with a nervous component. The bitter glycosides in chamomile stimulate the appetite and digestive activity, and the herb also helps relieve inflammatory conditions of the upper digestive tract, menopausal symptoms, mastitis, amenorrhea with a psychological component (e.g. anorexia nervosa), and hysteria.
Ocimum basilicum also called as albahaca in Hindi. It is very useful in the case of the hiatal hernia. The aroma of the plant stimulates the appetite, reduces nausea, and can also stimulate the production of milk in nursing mothers. It strengthens the nervous system, treats mouth ulcers and bad breath, and can even be used in abdominal massages. A seed of albahaca placed in the eye will remove unwanted material from the eye, like mucus.
Oreganum vulgare commonly called as oregano. It belongs to mint family-labiateae. Its active components are rosemarinic acid, stearic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, ursolic acid. Essential oil rich in thymol, cineol, carvacrol, borneol, beta-bisolobene, limonene, alpha-pynene, beta-pynene, myrcene, camphene, minerals, tannins and vitamins niacin, (beta-carotene).
It is used medicinally as bactericide, anti inflammatory, expectorant, antiseptic and febrifuge. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
