Abstract
The invention discloses a device and a method to limit the number of POIs for which notifications are to be generated. The user can enter a number which represents the maximum number of POIs for which the notifications are to be generated. The navigation device generates notifications only for these many POIs when the POIs are approaching. By limiting the notifications only to the required number of POIs, the driver distraction is reduced. The notifications also inform the user about the remaining number of POIs for which the notifications will be generated. Based on these notifications, the user can decide either to stop at the POIs or continue the journey.
Description
Field of Invention:
The invention relates to a Navigation device. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
Navigation devices informing the user about the approaching landmarks which are referred as Points Of Interest (POI) are known in prior art. The navigation devices contain a database of road network and the POIs. When the vehicle is travelling on a route, if the user has enabled to notify about the approaching POIs, then the navigation device notifies the user through audio and/or visual instructions about the approaching POIs.
This may be annoying to the user sometimes, as in some stretches of the journey there may be very high number of POIs of a selected category. This results in too many notifications for the user thereby distracting his concentration on driving.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION:
The invention proposes a simple method to limit the notifications to the user of the approaching POIs. This is achieved by providing a simple menu element in the user interface and receiving the user input. The user inputs the number of notifications he would like to receive during the journey. The user interface checks for the approaching POIs and generates notifications only for the programmed number of POIs. These POIs may be near the current vehicle position or near the destination or along the route.
ADVANTAGES OF THE INVENTION:
By limiting the number of notifications regarding the approaching POIs, the driver distraction is reduced. The driver can program the number of notifications he would like to receive during the journey. As the notification includes the information about the remaining POIs, the user can decide at each of the notifications whether to stop at the POI. He has the option to stop at any selected POI of his choice after receiving the notifications.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS:
Figure 1 Shows the schematic of the invention
Figure 2 Shows the menu for entering the number of POIs for notifyng
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:
Shown in fig. 1 is a schematic of a navigation device 10. A typical navigation device 10 comprises an input means 12; an output means 14, a position finding means 16, an user interface 18, a route calculation means 20, route guidance means 22 and a road network database 24 which also contains other data, for example, data on POIs. A typical navigation device, its internal components and its functioning are obvious to the people skilled in the art and it is not within the objective of this invention to disclose them in detail. Only the components which are relevant to describe the invention are disclosed.
The input means 12 may be a conventional type of keyboard or a touch screen. Through the input means 12, the user enters the inputs required for the functioning of the navigation device 10, for example for calculating a route that guides the user from a current position to a destination.
The output means 14 may be a display device, e. g. an LCD (liquid crystal display) flat screen. On the display means 14, the maps and the conventional route guidance information may be displayed.
The user interface 18 receives the inputs from the user and passes the inputs to the other means. The user interface 18 also displays the information for the user on the output means 16.
This road network database 24 encompasses all of the necessary geographical data required for performing a routing operation.
In the document position of the vehicle and the location of the vehicle are used interchangeably.
The position finding means 16 may comprise a GPS receiver and other algorithms to compute the position of the navigation device 10. The route calculation means 20 calculates a route from current vehicle position to the required destination. When the route is calculated, the user inputs entered into the input means for specifying the desired traveling route and the data from the road network database are thereby taken into account. The route so calculated may be displayed on the output means 14. The route guidance means 22 guides the user from the starting position to the required destination along the calculated route. The route guidance means 22 may output from time to time audio and/or visual instructions for the user.
Some of the above means explained may be combined.
The road network database 24 also comprises a set of destinations referred as Points Of Interest or POI for short. The POIs indicate locations which are of interest to the user. The POIs are normally organized under categories. The examples of POI categories are Hotels, Restaurants, Tourist Places, Shopping malls, Railway stations, Airport etc. The examples are only for the purpose of illustration and not act as a limitation. Below a particular category, a location identified by geographical co-ordinates is included as a POI. The POIs may contain additional attributes to describe the POI.
The road network database 24 may be referred as database in rest of the document.
As shown in fiig. 2, the invention proposes a new menu "POI notifications" in the user interface to configure the number of POIs for which the notifications are to be generated. The user first enters into a menu where the POI list is displayed. The user selects the categories of the POIs which he is interested in. This is already known in the prior art.
Once the selection of the POIs is completed from the POI list, the user interface according to the invention asks the user to enter the number of POIs for which the notifications are to be generated. This menu is referred as "POI notifications".
In the "POI notifications" menu, there are two options provided :
No. of POIs from current vehicle position :—
No. of POIs near the destination :—
Also at the top the category of the POI is displayed, which is not shown in fig .
The user can select the above options and enter the number in the editable field. Once the user confirms the above entries, the user interface stores the two programmed numbers for the category of POIs displayed in the first line. This will be repeated for all the categories of the POI which user has selected.
When the journey starts, the user interface checks for the selected POI categories and the number of POIs near the current vehicle position for which the notifications are to be generated. If the user has entered N as the number for the first option, then notifications are generated for the N number of POIs of selected category, which are closest to the current vehicle position and in the direction of the travel. The notifications are generated in advance when the POIs are approaching. The generation of notification in advance may be in terms of time to reach the POI or in terms of distance to reach the POI. Both these methods of generating the advance notifications for the approaching POIs is already known and hence not explained in detail.
Similarly the number of POIs near the destination for which the notifications are to be generated is checked by the user interface and appropriate notifications are generated.
The number programmed by the user acts as the maximum limit to output the notifications. If the actual number of POIs available along the route, is less than the number programmed for the selected category, the user interface generates the notification for all the POIs of selected category available along the route.
The use of the invention may be explained with an example below:
If an user is planning a journey, and wants to be notified for a particular category of POIs, for example, a bank ATM to draw the money, before ending the journey, the user first selects the Banking/ ATM in POI list menu which is already known. Then the user interface displays a menu to enter the "POI notifications" as below:
No. of POIs near the current vehicle position : -- No. of POIs near the destination : 3
The advantage in the invention is that the user is not disturbed by the notifications for all the ATMs along the route. The navigation device checks the available ATMs along the route and appropriately notifies the user. If there are 3 ATMs along the route, the notifications may be as below:
For the first of the three ATMs: The audio announcement "You are approaching first of the three ATMs".
With this, the user knows that there are another two ATMs available. If he wishes, he can stop at the notified ATM . If he wants to continue, he may do.
The next notifications will be as below, when the next POIs are approaching :
For the second of the three ATMs: The audio announcement "You are approaching second of the three ATMs".
For the third ATM : audio announcement "You are approaching the last ATM".
At this point user knows that this is the last ATM and there are no more ATMs along the route. This will help him to decide whether to stop at the ATM.
The above embodiment is explained with respect to a single category of POI. When the user selects multiple categories of POIs, then for each category, the number of notifications to be generated needs to be entered. For example, if the user has selected ATMs and Restaurants from the POI list, then for each of the categories ATM and Restaurants, the number of notifications to be generated needs to be entered.
Thus providing the user with only the required number of notifications for the approaching POIs, the invention eliminates the annoyance created by unnecessary notifications without prejudicing the user's interest. User is notified about the POIs at appropriate points.
Similarly the appropriate notifications are generated for POIs near the current vehicle position if the user has programmed accordingly.
In another embodiment the POIs may be along the route instead of either at the current position of the vehicle or at the end of the journey. In this case the menu option displayed may be "No. of POIs along the Route".
To detect the approaching POI, the user interface makes use of various inputs like, the current vehicle position computed based on the GPS data, the data from the road network database, the POI database, the wheel sensors, the gyroscope data etc. These are only mentioned as examples. Once the vehicle position is known, the locations of the appropriate POIs are computed and the notifications are generated.
