Abstract

The invention relates to medicine, specifically psychotherapy, and in particular to methods for inducing an altered state of consciousness, and can be used to achieve a state of psycho-emotional relaxation, enhance positive self-feeling in a patient and prevent stress and the consequences thereof. The patient is exposed to natural sounds, prerecorded on a physical medium, in conjunction with images displayed on a screen. An insulated, dimly lit, ventilated room is equipped with soundproofing that provides a significant reduction in the level of external noise to no greater than 35 dB. A theatric atmosphere is created in the room by means of the soundproofing, darkly coloured walls or upholstery, a comfortable chair, semi-darkness and the decorative design of a screen having a diagonal of no more than 50 cm. The screen is framed all the way around its outside edge with a moulded frame or is draped with strips of fabric reminiscent of the wings and curtain in a theatre. The natural sounds are played at their natural volume and correspond, in terms of their content, to images of natural landscapes in the form of pictures by well-known artists shown one after another on the screen in the form of a slide show. Each image appears slowly on a dark screen, gradually increasing in brightness to a normal level and then, after remaining at normal brightness level for 5-10 seconds, equally gradually and slowly fades into complete darkness. The period of time from the appearance to the fading of each image constitutes one video event and lasts 45-60 seconds; the total number of video events in one session is no less than seven. The method makes it possible to relieve emotional and nervous tension as well as serving to prevent stress and the consequences thereof.
