Definitions
- the invention relates to a vessel comprising a hull with a deck and a cargo area extending in a length direction of the deck, a crane for lifting components that are stored on the deck in the cargo area such as a gantry crane, the crane comprising a portal with two vertical legs movable along a length direction of the vessel, each leg on a respective side of the cargo area and a hoisting device connected to the portal.
- Offshore wind turbines are to be installed in increasing water depths.
- the foundation type of the wind turbine construction changes from monopiles to jackets (and others).
- the associated foundation weight and dimensions will increase with increasing water depth.
- larger water depths are often associated with longer sailing distances from shore with related supply chain logistics.
- a vessel comprising a hull with a deck and a cargo area extending in a length direction of the deck, a crane for lifting components that are stored on the deck in the cargo area such as a gantry crane, the crane comprising a portal with two vertical legs movable along a length direction of the vessel, each leg on a respective side of the cargo area and a hoisting device connected to the portal.
- the vessel according to the invention is a jacket installer designed to install jackets (and other objects) offshore.
- the jacket installer comprises a gantry crane that can travel along the length of the vessel (other types of cranes can be considered as well).
- the accommodations, facilities and bridge are located at one end of the vessel

- FIG. 1 shows schematically a side view of a vessel according to an embodiment.
- the vessel 1 comprises a hull with a deck 5 and a cargo area extending in a length direction of the deck.
- a crane 2 is mounted for lifting components 50 that are stored on the deck in the cargo area.
- Such components 50 comprise for example a jacket 50 that is part of an offshore wind turbine construction.
- the crane may be a gantry crane.
- the crane 2 comprises a portal 3 with two vertical legs 14 that are movable along the length direction L of the vessel 1. Each leg of the crane 2 is positioned on a respective side of the cargo area.
- a hoisting device 4 is connected to the portal 3.
- the portal 3 of the vessel 1 is movable to an offloading position near one of the transverse sides A, B of the deck, i.e. the bow or stern of the vessel 1.
- the crane 2 is shown schematically positioned at two different locations on the vessel, i.e., the two transverse sides.
- the travelling crane 2 consists of a gantry (portal 3) and a hoisting device 4 (like a crane hook, winches, sheaves etc).
- the crane 2 can travel along the length of the vessel 1 and the hoisting device 4 can travel (transverse) along the gantry width (transverse beam). In this manner the complete available deck space can be reached with the hook.
- the gantry crane 2 can be easily positioned above any items 50 to be installed.
- the vessel comprises side walls at each side of the cargo area.
- the side wall height of the vessel at the transverse side at the offloading position is lower than the side wall height at the longitudinal sides. See e.g., figure 4.
- the crane 2 may furthermore have a supporting member 8 that is connected to the (legs 14 of the) portal 3.
- the crane 2 may comprise rolling or sliding means 6 for moving the crane 2 along the length direction L of the vessel 1.
- the rolling or sliding means 6 are located on or along tracks 7 positioned on both longitudinal sides of the cargo area.
- the portal 3 and the supporting member 8 are placed on a support platform which is movable via the rolling or sliding means 6.
- the travelling of the gantry crane 2 is by means of wheels (or other rolling or sliding means) 6 along a rail/track 7 that run over the whole length (or a large part thereof) of the vessel.
- the rails/tracks 7 are accommodated above the waterline at the side of the vessel so the gantry crane 2 can reach (almost) the whole deck space available.
- the items 50 to be installed can be positioned (and sea fastened etc) in the cargo area between the rails.
- the rolling or sliding means are arranged with locking means for blocking motion of the crane at the desired position.
- the tracks 7 extend to the offloading position, which is situated outboard of the vessel hull.
- the rails/tracks extend over the aft of the vessel, or the vessel is executed with a lowered side wall at the transverse offloading side, or with a slot, so the load can be placed/lowered on its offshore location directly.
- the gantry can be tiltable (over board) to increase the outreach over the aft of the vessel.
- the portal 3 may be hingeable around a transverse hinge axis 11 in the lengthwise direction L of the vessel 1. In this manner the portal is capable of lifting or lowering components from or to a location outboard of the hull of the vessel 1.
- an upper end of the portal 3 may be attached to one end of a cable 9, whereas another end of the cable 9 is connected to a winch 10 situated near a bow or stern of the vessel, on a side opposite the offloading position.
- the vessel 1 may comprise a cradle 12 on the deck 5 of the vessel 1 that supports the crane 2 in a travelling position P, wherein the crane 2extends in a predominantly horizontal position.
- the track comprises a locking position for the rolling or sliding means, such that the crane is not movable in the travelling position.
- the hoisting device 4 of the crane 2 is movable along a transverse beam of the portal 3 in direction T transverse to the vessel's length direction L.
- the crane hook is actuated by means of a winch.
- the crane hook can be motion compensated (active or passive) so to minimize load motion (induced by vessel motions). In this manner the workability of the vessel is optimized (it can work in environmental conditions where a non-compensated crane cannot work because of restrictions of load motions during handling/operation).
- the motion compensation system can be in the vertical as well as in the horizontal plane.
- the vertical (heave) compensation can be executed in the main hoist winch directly or by means of an additional integrated heave compensator device.
- Motion compensation devices for the horizontal plane active or passive
- the loading (and/or unloading) of the jackets can be done by the crane of the jacket installer. It is self-supporting so no additional lifting devices are required onshore to load the jackets onboard.
- the vessel is called a jacket installer.
- the invention described here can be used for any installation of any items offshore, e.g. installation of wind turbines, topsides, subsea equipment, etc.
- the jacket installer facilitates a more efficient logistics and installation operation with a reduction of installation costs per jacket (or other cargo).
- the vessel may be either non propelled or self propelled, which in the latter case allows for good sailing properties (due to the selected vessel shape).
- the functionality of the vessel and/or gantry crane does not require jacking anymore, thus reducing cycle time and omitting an expensive jacking system.
- the vessel represents a limited investment since it is a fit for purpose transport and lifting system (matching with the jacket dimensions and loads) instead of a multipurpose system.
- the vessel according to the invention provides a high operability/ workability with limited 'waiting on weather'.
- the high workability is the result of selected/fit for purpose vessel shape and/or the application of motion compensation systems.
- the shape of the vessel can be ship shaped, semi-submersible shaped, catamaran shaped but is not restricted to these shapes. The shape will depend on factors like sailing speed, allowable motions (in the different operations), draft, investment cost, required deck space, loading capacity, etc.
- a semi-submersible vessel or submersible barge are expected to be good concepts because of their limited motions during installation in submerged mode and good sailing properties in floating mode. Other vessel concepts can be considered for their specific advantages.
- the vessel can be equipped with a mooring system, propulsion system and/or Dynamic Positioning system.
