Definitions

  • This invention relates to injection devices and more specifically to autoinjector devices for the administration of liquid medication, for example, insulin or growth hormone.
  • An autoinjector is an automatic injection device designed to facilitate automated delivery of a dose of medicament to a patient through a hypodermic needle, the injection usually being administered by the patient themselves.
  • An autoinjector works, for example, by delivering an injection automatically upon actuation by the patient pressing a button, moving a lever or part of a housing etc. This is in contrast to a conventional manual syringe where the patient himself needs to directly depress a plunger into a barrel containing medicament in order to effect the injection.
  • autoinjector and "injection device” are used interchangeably in the following description.
  • EP-A-1998831 the end of the needle insertion stage occurs when the syringe holder 100 strikes an internal boss within the front housing 200. This may cause impact loading on the syringe and increases the risk of syringe breakage. Although the impact is attenuated to some extent by the device's return spring, this is limited by the need for the return spring to provide a lower load when compressed than the main spring energy source when extended, and the loading from the return spring is entirely dependent on position and not speed.

  • reference to a “rearward” direction means the direction which is away from the patient and the “rearward” end of the device is the end furthest from the patient's skin when the injection device is in use.
  • the mechanism described below provides damping at the end of the insertion phase by compressing air in pockets and restricting the exhaust of the compressed air.

  • the tabs 1 10 approach the pockets 210.
  • the tabs 1 10 enter the pockets 210, thereby displacing the air present in the pockets. Both the size of the outlet and the volume of the chamber are decreased by the presence of the tab in the pocket.
  • the tabs 1 10 are configured to be a close fit to the internal dimensions of the pockets 210. Therefore the rate at which the displaced air can escape is restricted and so at least some of the remaining air is compressed. This compression provides resistance to further forward movement of the syringe support means 100, damping its movement and avoiding an undesirable sudden impact between the syringe support means 100 and the front housing 200.
  • the needle insertion stage ends when the flange 104 of the syringe support means 100 contacts the internal boss 220 of the front housing 200. In this position, as illustrated in Figure 5, the tabs 1 10 are preferably fully engaged in the pockets 210.
  • the air chamber could be defined between the front housing and another forward moving component or part of the syringe support means.
  • the air chamber could be defined between the syringe barrel per se and a part of the front housing, or between the front housing and the injection site.
