Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for purifying carbon nanotubes and applications thereof, especially for the manufacture of composites, of electronic components and of biomaterials. The process of the invention is characterized in that it comprises a step of treating a sample of carbon nanotubes in the presence of dihalogen gas and/or an interhalogen gas at 200-2000°C, and in the absence of H2O and HCl, without a separate oxidation step and without prior exfoliation of the carbon-based multilayer shells in the sample. The present invention also relates to a device for purifying carbon nanotubes comprising: - a system for introducing a dihalogen gas and/or an interhalogen gas, - a thermal compartment in which temperatures of 200-2000°C may be used, and a system that makes it possible to control the diffusion of the dihalogen and/or interhalogen gas into the carbon-based layers of the samples of nanotubes to be purified, selected from a system for purifying the dihalogen and/or interhalogen gas, a system for controlling the concentration of the dihalogen and/or interhalogen gas, a system for controlling the pressure of the dihalogen and/or interhalogen gas, a system for controlling the flow rate of the dihalogen and/or interhalogen gas, or any combination of two or more of the aforementioned systems.
