Definitions

  • This invention relates to battery-powered portable tools.
  • Battery-operated portable tools are becoming more and more popular, as they allow a user to operate a power tool away from a fixed source of electricity.
  • Hedge trimmers can be provided as such battery-operated portable tools; a pair of elongate blades is provided, each carrying rows of cutting teeth along their opposing long edges, with one blade or both blades oscillating relative to the other in a reciprocating motion when driven by an electric motor powered by a battery. As the teeth of the blades move spaces between the teeth open and close and any hedge material caught in ⁇ the spaces is cut as the spaces close up.
  • Such devices can be quite heavy and so two handles are provided for the user; one close to the blades and one further away so that the centre of gravity of the trimmer lies between the handles.
  • the forward handle can then be used to take the weight of the trimmer and the rear handle moved around to cause the blades to sweep through an arc across the hedge.

  • the first position may be such that with the blade in a horizontal plane and the two sets of teeth facing to the right and left of the horizontal axis - respectively the handle lies in a vertical plane. • the handle will have a certain thickness or width and as such the term "lies in a plane" should be construed in a practical sense.
