- the collar 24 may be made of any suitable material, for example a suitable flexible plastics material.
- Partial circuit diagrams 22.1 , 22.2, 22.3, 22.4, and 22.5 of the electronic circuit of the apparatus 14.1 are shown in Figures 4 to 7, respectively. These partial circuit diagrams are not a definitive or complete illustration of the electronic circuit, but are intended merely to provide those skilled in the art with some indication of possible configurations of some parts of the electronic circuit. Those skilled in the art should be able to develop an electronic circuit having the required functionality, as required by the system 10 and as broadly described herein.
- the electronic circuit of the apparatus 14.1 includes:

Restless motion pattern is associated with anxiety of the sheep 12.1 .

- the algorithms of the processor 28 are configured to interpret a restless motion pattern exhibited by the sheep 12.1 uninterrupted over a predetermined time period, say 20s, as a trigger event, in response to which it will trigger the electronic circuit to:
- a trigger signal in the form of an RF trigger signal via an RF trigger signal transmitter of the electronic circuit.
- the deterrent sound emitted by the speakers 34 varies in frequency in a random fashion, thereby to reduce the risk of a predator becoming accustomed to the deterrent sound.
- the frequency of the deterrent sound is randomly varied within the range 5kHz to 35kHz and has a sub-harmonic frequency of up to 55kHz.
- the consequential deterrent sound may be intermittent, for example three repetitions of a sequence of 1 s of sound emission and a 1 s pause.
- the deterrent sound is tailored to be an irritant and deterrent particularly to a jackal, intended to cause it to flee.
- the deterrent sound may be audible to a particular type of predator, e.g. jackal, but not to sheep.
- the frequency of the deterrent sound for a particular type of predator may be determined by way of experimentation.
- the deterrent sound may be an ultrasonic sound.

- the algorithms executed by the processor 28 further are configured to interpret a predetermined minimum duration of a restless motion pattern, say 60s, as a warning communication trigger event.
- the electronic circuit is configured to respond to such an event by transmitting, via the RF transceiver, a warning communication in the form of an RF warning signal incorporating GPS coordinates of the device 14.1 .
- the warning signal is transmitted via the repeater station 15 to the portable warning device 16.
- the warning device 16 includes a display 36. Upon receiving the warning signal, the device 16 displays on the display 36 a warning message and the GPS coordinates of the device 14.1 and emits, via a speaker thereof, an alert tone.
- the processor 28 of the apparatus 14.1 may be configured to cause the RF transceiver to transmit a series of subsequent warning signals to permit the sheep 12.1 to be tracked by means of the warning device 16.
- An alternative embodiment of the apparatus of the invention may be GSM enabled and configured to transmit the warning communication to a remote communications device via a mobile telephone communications network.

- the electronic circuit is configured to respond to a deterrent emission trigger event by increasing the frequency at which the LED's 32 flash, in order to deter jackals. It will be appreciated that the LED's 32 can also facilitate monitoring of the herd by a shepherd at night.
- the processor 28 is programmable by means of an external computer running suitable software and being connected to the electronic circuit, for example wirelessly via the RF transceiver. Aspects of the operation of the processor 28 that are thus programmable include, inter alia:
- Alternative embodiments of the apparatus of the invention may include, as an alternative to or in addition to the motion sensor 30, at least one sensor for sensing a corresponding parameter of a sheep operatively carrying it, e.g. at least one of a heat sensor for sensing body heat of the sheep and a heart rate sensor for sensing the heart rate of the sheep.
- the processor via the at least one algorithm executed by it, may make use of inputs from any of its sensors in determining whether or not they are suggestive of anxiety of the livestock animal. It may also take account of the time of day in such an algorithm, as certain parameters of the animal as sensed by a sensor may at a certain time of day be normal but not at another.
