Abstract
The invention relates to a fuel additive to the engine fuel of petrol- or diesel- fuelled engines to reduce the emission of harmful substances, comprising a mixture of isoalkanes in liquid and synthetic motor oil.
Description
Fuel additive
The invention relates to a fuel additive, the main component of which is a mixture of isoalkanes. The fuel additive may be added to petrol, diesel, as well as biodiesel fuels, it has a favourable effect on the emission of harmful substances, especially CO, and improves the energy efficiency of engines.
The reduction of harmful substances (nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon derivatives) emitted by the increasing number of motor vehicles is a very important task nowadays. A possible method for addressing the problem is the use of various additives, mixed to the fuel to exert a favourable effect. Numerous fuel additives are know from the literature and available commercially. Their aim is, in addition to reducing the emission of harmful substances, to increase the service life of the engines, to improve their energy efficiency, and to reduce fuel consumption.
Some fuel additives contain a metal salt or a metal complex as their main component. E.g. the additive according to document No. P9402368 contains the alkali metal or alkali earth metal salt of organic sulpho-acid, the additive disclosed in international patent application No. WO 05023965 contains a meta-, pyro- or orthophosphate-sodium salt. Hungarian patent application No. P0301566 describes the application of iron salt.
The invention disclosed in Hungarian patent application No. P9400828 relates to long- chain hydrocarbon-based fuel additives containing a polar end group, produced by reacting hydroformylated olefins with polyamines, and hydrogenating the reaction product.
The fuel additive preparations according to document No. P0301874 contain at least one detergent additive and a carrier oil mixture, comprising at least one synthetic carrier oil and at least one mineral carrier oil.
In addition, solutions are known where free ammonia or ammonia bound in amide and/or ammonia compounds is introduced into the fuel to facilitate combustion (document No. P9700203).
According to international patent application No. WO 0210317 a significant reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions can be achieved by means of methyl fatty acid esters in diesel- fuelled engines.
The aim of the invention was to develop an environmentally friendly fuel additive having a more favourable effect than those known so far.
The set aim was achieved by developing a mixture of substances, the main component of which is a mixture of isoalkanes.
Alkanes with branched carbon chains are more volatile than those with open carbon chains, and have a lower boiling point. The isoalkanes applied by us are in liquid state, and the boiling point of the mixture is high enough to allow it to exert its effect for the required time when mixed to the fuel.
Thus, the present invention relates to a fuel additive to the engine fuel of petrol- or diesel-oil-fuelled engines to reduce the emission of harmful substances, containing isoalkanes in liquid state as its main component.
The isoalkanes were selected from isoalkanes having a carbon-atom number between C and C11 in such a manner that the boiling point of the mixture should be in the range between 170 and 190°C, preferably between 175 and 185°C.
In addition, the fuel additive also contains maximum 2.0 %v/v synthetic motor oil.
Furthermore, it is preferable if ethanol is added to the mixture according to the invention. The maximum amount of ethanol shall be 5 %v/v.
The favourable effect of the fuel additive according to the invention is measurable even when it is added in a very small amount. The fuel additive shall be mixed to the fuel in a minimum amount of 0.001 %v/v.
The amount of the emission of CO and residual hydrocarbons is affected by whether at the time of ignition the fuel reaches the temperature required for complete combustion, or there is only incomplete combustion before it is emitted. The fuel additive according to
the invention facilitates complete combustion, thereby significantly reducing the emission of CO, increasing the performance of the engine, and resulting in significant fuel saving. When used regularly, the fuel additive has the additional advantage of cleaning and maintaining the injector system and the exhaust system.
