Definitions
- the present invention relates to a poster holder comprising a plurality of controllable light sources.
- the invention also relates to a corresponding method for controlling a plurality of light sources of a poster holder.
- LEDs have become sufficiently bright and inexpensive to serve as a light source in for example lighting system with adjustable color.
- Adjustable color lighting systems are typically constructed by using a number of colors, and in one example, the three primaries red, green and blue are used. The color of the generated light is determined by the LEDs that are used, as well as by the mixing ratios.
- To generate "white”, all three LEDs have to be turned on, preferably also in combination with one or a plurality of white LEDs (e.g. blue LEDs with phosphor to convert to white light) for achieving good quality of light and for allowing variation also of the color temperature of the light.
- white LEDs e.g. blue LEDs with phosphor to convert to white light
- US 2008/0143549 discloses a poster comprising a plurality of embedded illumination circuits and a hard-wired Display Code Storage Unit (DCSU) where the hard-wired DCSU outputs a display code that controls an illumination pattern that has been pre-determined for the embedded illumination circuits. Accordingly, it is possible to illuminate the poster in a manner that allows the poster to be read in low-light environments, to create a noticeable appearance to attract a viewer's attention and/or have its illumination circuits activated in a particular sequence that comports with an overall aesthetic design of the poster.
- DCSU Display Code Storage Unit
- a poster holder comprising a frame structure configured to receive a poster (such as an advertisement or a signage), a plurality of light sources, and a control unit for controlling the plurality of light sources, wherein the poster holder further comprises a bar code reader connected to the control unit and configured to detect a bar code of the poster, and wherein the control unit is further adapted to control the plurality of light sources according to a predetermined illumination pattern based on information corresponding to the detected bar code.
- Advantages with the invention include the possibility to keep the manufacturing process of the poster as simple as possible, as there is only necessary to provide a bar code with the poster.
- a bar code may e.g. be printed onto the rim and/or the back of the poster, but may also be provided e.g. on or together with a tube for storage of the poster before arranging the poster with the frame structure of the poster holder. Further configurations are possible and within the scope of the invention.
- using a bar code for providing control information of the light sources improves reliability for the overall system (e.g. comprising poster holder and poster) as no electric contacts are necessary between the poster and the poster holder.
- the use of a bar code reader is simple and quick when installing a poster with the poster holder.
- the bar code reader may be embedded in the frame structure and the bar code reader may be configured to detect the bar code when the poster is arranged at the frame structure. Accordingly, the user installing the poster with the poster holder does not necessary have to specifically perform any additional step for controlling the illumination pattern, but rather only have to arrange the bar code in front of the bar code reader.
- the bar code reader may be detachably connected to the control unit, preferably in a wireless manner, such that the user installing the poster with the poster holder simply scans (detects) the bar code when installing the poster, where after information corresponding to the bar code is transmitted to the control unit.
- the communication between the bar code reader and the control unit is wireless.
- the poster holder may further comprise a connector specifically configured to receive the bar code reader (e.g. a connecting wire of the bar code reader) thereby allowing a wired connection between the bar code reader and the control unit.
- a connector specifically configured to receive the bar code reader (e.g. a connecting wire of the bar code reader) thereby allowing a wired connection between the bar code reader and the control unit.
- the bar code of the poster may take any form or shape suitable for the poster and the amount of information that is desirable to transfer from the poster to the control unit.
- the plurality of light sources such as a plurality of differently colored LEDs, are individually controllable and arranged in an array.
- 1024 bits of information needs to be transferred from the poster to the poster holder for handling both addressing issues and intensity levels, and thus for controlling the light sources according to a predetermined illumination pattern corresponding to the information of the bar code.
- 1024 bits of information can easily be encoded using e.g. a 2D bar code.
- the bar code may be used for identifying the poster.
- the control unit may be configured to store a plurality of predetermined illumination patterns, and the information of the bar code may be used for selecting an illumination pattern corresponding to the identity information provided by means of the bar code.
- the poster holder may further comprise communication means for allowing connection to e.g. a control central being updated as new posters and illumination patterns are designed.
- a method for controlling a poster holder comprising a frame structure configured to receive a poster, a plurality of light sources, a control unit for controlling the plurality of light sources and a bar code reader connected to the control unit, wherein the method comprises the steps of detecting a bar code of the poster, and controlling the plurality of light sources according to a predetermined pattern based on information corresponding to the detected bar code.
- Fig. 1 illustrates a conceptual poster holder according to a currently preferred embodiment of the invention
- Fig. 2 illustrates a detailed view of a bar code of the poster
- Fig. 3 illustrates a detailed view of a bar code reader embedded within the poster holder of Fig. 1.
- a conceptual poster holder 100 comprising a frame structure 102 configured to receive and hold a poster 104 using clips 106.
- the frame structure comprises a light mixing box 108 comprising a plurality of differently colored LEDs 110 (e.g. comprising red, green and blue LEDs) arranged in an array for emitting light through the poster 104 and the transparent cover 112.
- the poster holder 100 further comprises a bar code reader 114 connected to a control unit 116 for controlling the plurality of LEDs 110, and driver circuitry 118 connected to the control unit 116 and configured for driving the LEDs 110 according to a predetermined illumination pattern.
- the control unit 116 may include a microprocessor, microcontroller, programmable digital signal processor or another programmable device.
- the control unit 116 may also, or instead, include an application specific integrated circuit, a programmable gate array or programmable array logic, a programmable logic device, or a digital signal processor.
- the control unit 116 includes a programmable device such as the microprocessor, microcontroller or programmable digital signal processor mentioned above, the processor may further include computer executable code that controls operation of the programmable device.
- a bar code 120 of the poster 102 may e.g. be arranged on the back and at the rim of the poster 102.
- An arrangement detecting the bar code 120 is illustrated in detail in Fig. 2, further illustrating the electrical connection between the bar code reader 120, the control unit 116, the LED driver circuitry 118 and the LEDs 110.
- a user may open the transparent cover 112 and removes a previous poster (not shown) by opening the clips 106. Thereafter, the user positions the (new) poster 104 with the frame structure 102 and closes the clips 106 following with closing the transparent cover 112. Following the closure of the transparent cover 112, the control unit 116 activates the bar code reader 114 which in turn will detect the bar code 120 of the poster and provide information corresponding to the bar code 120 to the control unit 116. The control unit 116 will search through a plurality of (e.g. in the control unit 116) previously stored predetermined illumination patterns and select an illumination pattern corresponding to the information of the bar code 120.
- control unit controls the driver circuitry 118 such that the plurality of LEDs 110 are adjusted, possibly in relation to a combination of spatial, intensity and color designed to correspond to e.g. textual and/or graphic elements of the poster.
- the plurality of previously stored predetermined illumination patterns may for example be updated by allowing the poster holder 102 to connect, by means of e.g. communication means (not shown), to a control central (not shown) having information as to new and additional predetermined illumination patterns.
