Definitions
- the present invention is developed in the field of veterinary medicine.
- the present invention provides novel temporary and disposable immobilizer devices of the orthopedic splints type for immobilization of the neck, femur, ulna radius, tibia tibia and humerus of pets, particularly dogs and cats, when they have suffered from injuries and require immobilization before , during and after the respective surgery inside the hospital.
- pets treated with the immobilization mechanisms currently available are easily relocated and may have depression, because they cannot develop their usual activities by having difficulties to move, see, hear, eat, sleep, etc.
- These devices are not comfortable or anatomical, so that the pet can go unnoticed for placement in the injured structure.
- other important aspects of conventional immobilizers are added, such as the fact that they are elements of a lot of weight and excessive rigidity, so they take up a lot of space, making transport and storage difficult; some are not disposable by virtue of their materials; others are not waterproof and resistant.
- Some other devices are not adaptable to the sizes of each type of pet, which is a decisive factor in the effective immobilization of the injured structure.
- Figure 1 is a front plan view of an immobilization device such as that of the present invention for immobilization of a pet's neck, particularly a dog.
- Figure 2 is a front plan view of an immobilizer device such as that of the present invention for immobilization of the femur of a pet, particularly a dog.
- Figure 3 is a perspective view of an immobilizer device such as that of the present invention for immobilization of the ulna radius of a pet, particularly a dog.
- Figure 4 is a perspective view of an immobilizing device such as that of the present invention for the immobilization of the tibia fibula of a pet, particularly a dog.
- Figure 5 is a perspective view of an immobilizer device like that of the present invention for immobilization of the humerus of a pet, particularly a dog.
- the present invention emerges as an alternative solution to many of the disadvantages existing with the immobilizing devices currently available for pets, in terms of effectiveness, safety for the patient, adaptability, application, price, hygiene, comfort, among others.
- the applicant was given the task of developing innovative temporary and disposable immobilizer devices of the orthopedic splints type for preventive and effective care of neck and limb injuries, before, during or after the respective surgery when the pet is in Hospital.
- the applicant managed to develop an immobilizer device for neck and limbs of pets that achieves its purpose of effective and safe immobilization for the patient by virtue of its novel configuration and its elaboration in materials such as cardboard coated with acrylic resins, or plastic cardboard Indeed, these materials are advantageous and suitable for the purposes of the present invention since they generate high resistance to the immobilizer device and, therefore, maintain the necessary stiffness of the injured members of the pet before, during or after the surgical procedure.
- these materials are partially waterproof, so that even in the presence of bleeding they maintain firmness; they exhibit zero radiopacity, which allows hospital staff to take the different diagnostic x-ray plates without removing the immobilizer; they allow a significantly economical product with respect to those immobilizers available in the market; and also its transport and storage is easier, since they have a much lighter weight and storage, since in static state, they remain folded occupying a minimum space.

- An essential aspect that characterizes the temporary and disposable immobilizer devices of the neck, femur, ulna radius, tibia, fibula and pet humerus according to the present invention lies in the material from which they are manufactured, since the material constitutes an added value for the invention with respect to the devices commonly available in terms of costs, resistance, ease of handling, hygiene, among others.
- temporary and disposable immobilizers of the orthopedic pet splint type of the present invention can be manufactured from cardboard coated with acrylic resins or plastic cardboard that generate high strength, and excellent stiffness throughout the immobilization procedure of the affected limb, and patient transport.
- This cardboard-type material coated with acrylic resins is made from paper, which is composed of two "liners” or outer layers and a medium corrugated, that is, a corrugated inner layer, subjected to a corrugation process. Subsequently, the cardboard is subjected to a coating with an acrylic resin, commercially available as DISPROMUL ® . Once the cardboard is covered, it is subjected to the die-cutting procedure to obtain the final piece and mark the perforation lines that indicate the way to fold the immobilizer. Finally, following a manual procedure, the sailboat is placed on each splint.
- This type of material corresponds to a polypropylene alveolar sheet of different sizes ranging from 2.5 to 5 mm., Whose weight is very light, excellent resistance and total impermeability, which is subjected to the process extrusion to shape the plastic; Then it is punched to cut the molds of the splints and mark the perforation lines that indicate the way to fold the immobilizer, to which the sailboat tapes are finally attached at each end.
- the immobilizing devices of the present invention can be configured to be used on pets of any race and age.
- the size of the devices can be manufactured in various sizes, including small, medium and large; but that in addition to perfectly accommodating the members that are intended to be immobilized, they retain the specific configuration properties and characteristics discussed above to achieve the advantages disclosed in the present invention.
