Definitions
- the present invention relates to a surface mount connector comprising a plurality of electro-conductive terminals to be electrically connected to a printed circuit board (PCB) .
- PCB printed circuit board
- Connectors for mounting to printed circuit boards or the like are provided with contact leads or terminals that engage contact pads on the surface of the circuit board. After positioning and securing the connector with respect to the circuit board, the terminals are soldered to the circuit board. To obtain a reliable soldered contact between the terminal leads and the circuitry of the circuit board, it is important that the terminals of the connector are coplanar and within the proximity of the solder pads on the surface of the circuit board. If the terminals are not coplanar to each other within a small range, typically about 0.10 mm, the lowest positioned terminals will sit on the top surface of the contact pad where they will be securely soldered, while the highest positioned terminals will be so far from the contact pads that they will not become securely soldered.
- the terminals are generally bent and positioned with mechanical tooling so that they match up with the surface of the printed circuit board.
- Each terminal is bent and positioned so as to be as much as possible coplanar with the other terminals.
- normal component and process variations make attaining exact terminal lead positioning very difficult. Attaining the desired very small amount of variance is complex and expensive.
- the rate of failure may be high.
- US6012931 discloses a connector with surface mount terminals with bent end sections. An insulative wafer is used to maintain coplanarity of the terminals. The wafer is attached to the lower side of the connector and pushes the terminals aside over a predefined distance.
- This object of the invention is achieved with a connector according to claim 1. This way, with pressure elements directly engaging mounting portion of the terminals, the mounting portions can very accurately be positioned and a very high degree of coplanarity can be obtained.
- the pressure element can be part of the housing or can be part of a wafer or press block attached to the housing.
- the housing or the pressure element can very precisely and accurately be manufactured, e.g., by injection moulding, so very accurate positioning of the mounting portions can be obtained.
- the connector according to the invention can for example be a right-angle connector (i.e. the mating portion of the terminal extends parallel to the PCB) or a straight connector (i.e. the mating portion of the terminal extends substantially perpendicularly to the PCB) .
- the right angle connector usually supports terminals having a first section comprising the mating portion, a second section comprising the mounting portion, the first and the second sections being interconnected to each other by an intermediate section extending essentially perpendicularly to the first section.
- the first section can for example be supported by a support surface.
- the support surface supporting the first portion can be configured to diverge from said first portion at a distance before the intermediate section.
- the intermediate section is capable to move into the housing.
- Figure 1 shows in cross section a connector according to the present invention
- Figure 2 shows in cross section a further embodiment of a connector according to the invention
- Figures 3a to 3e show the process for manufacturing a connector according to the present invention.
- Figure 1 shows in cross section a right angle connector 1 comprising an insulating housing 2 with a plurality of passages 3A, 3B.
- Each passage 3A, 3B accommodates an electro-conductive terminal 4A, 4B.
- the terminals 4A, 4B form an array of terminals extending in a direction perpendicular to the cross section shown in Figure 1.
- Each terminal 4A, 4B has a mating portion 5A, 5B having an arc shape end at a mating side 6 of the connector 1. This mating side 6 of the connector 1 is configured to cooperate with a suitable mating connector.
- the housing 2 of the connector 1 also comprises a mounting side 7.
- Each terminal 4A, 4B comprises a mounting portion 8A, 8B projecting from the mounting side 7 of the housing 2.
- the terminals 4A, 4B have a first section 9A, 9B comprising the mating portions 5A, 5B, an intermediate section 1OA, 1OB being under right angle with the first sections 9A, 9B of the terminals.
- the intermediate section 1OA, 1OB are linked to the mounting portions 8A, 8B.
- the first section 9A, 9B is supported by a support surface HA, HB formed by the bottom wall of the passage 3.
- the support surface HA, HB is chamfered to form a section 12A, 12B diverging from supported first section 9A, 9B up to to the portion of the passages 3A, 3B which are substantially perpendicular to the first sections 5A, 5B.
- the support surface HA, HB diverges from the first section at a distance before the intermediate section so as to form a funnel in the passages 3A, 3B which gives room for deforming the terminals between the first and intermediate sections, when the mounting portion is placed against the contact pads of the PCB.
- a feature allows the terminals to some extent to pivot in the plane comprising both the first and intermediate section and/or perpendicular to the printed circuit board plane.
- the pivot point is located on the support surface, in the vicinity of the aperture of the housings outside of which extend the mating portions 5A, 5B.
- the mounting portions 8A, 8B are provided with curved end sections 13A, 13B.
- the housing 2 is provided with a wafer or press block 14 attached to the housing 2.
- the wafer 14 comprises passages 15A, 15B for the intermediate sections 1OA, 1OB of the terminals 4A and 4B, respectively.
- the intermediate section of the terminal is not fixedly mounted into the passage portion 15a, 15b, instead there is clearance between the terminal and the housing which allows the intermediate section to move upwardly into the passage.
- the mounting section is also capable to move upwardly to a certain extent (which will be explained below) .
- the wafer or press block can be an integral part of the housing.
- the wafer 14 has pressure surfaces 16A, 16B pressing on the concave side 17A, 17B of the curved end sections 13A, 13B.
- the pressure surfaces 16A, 16B can for instance be a ledge extending along the row of terminals 4A and 4B, respectively.
- the wafer 14 and the pressure surfaces 16A, 16B are accurately dimensioned to press all curved end sections 13A, 13B of terminals 4A, 4B into a coplanar position.
- the convex sides 18A, 18B of the curved end sections 13A, 13B are soldered to contact pads on a printed circuit board.
- the pressure surface acts as a stop element in the upward direction.
- Figure 2 shows another embodiment of a header connector 20 according to the invention.
- the connector 20 is shown in cross section and comprises an insulating housing 21 having a bottom wall and two upstanding side walls 21.
- the bottom wall is provided with two parallel rows of passages 22 accommodating two parallel rows of electro-conductive terminals 23.
- the rows of terminals 23 extend in a direction parallel to the side walls 21.
- the terminals 23 have a mounting portion 24 projecting from a mounting side 25 of the connector 20.
- the terminals 23 comprise a mating portion 26 extending towards the mating side 27 of the connector 20.
- the mating portions 26 serve to engage conductive terminals of a suitable mating connector.
- the mounting portions 24 are provided with curved end sections 28. These curved end sections 28 serve to be soldered with their convex side 29 to respective contact pads on a printed circuit board.
- the curved end sections 28 are pushed downwardly by a pressure member 31 forming an integral part of the housing 21.
- the pressure member 31 is a ledge extending along the row of terminals 23 and accurately dimensioned to press all curved sections 28 of all terminals 23 to a coplanar position.
- Fig 3a is a cross-sectional view of the connector housing 32 made of dielectric material provided with two receiving areas 33 and a first terminal 34 having a hairpin shape received in a receiving area 33.
- the terminal has been inserted from the bottom side of the housing through a terminal passage 35 formed within the bottom wall of the housing 32.
- the connector comprises a pressure element 36 which is, in the present embodiment, a projection formed downwardly from the bottom wall of the housing.
- the terminal is preferably made from a sheet of metal member which has been stamped to form the terminal with its carrier strip 37.
- the terminal is made with a portion having a shoulder section 38.
- Fig. 3b is a step following that one of Fig. 3a, after the carrier strip has been removed.
- a forming tool is then used to shape the mounting portion of the terminal; the forming tool comprises an anvil device 39 and a bending hammer 40 which trap in-between them the terminal mounting portion.
- Fig. 3c depicts the bending step of the manufacturing process.
- Another anvil device has a main support surface 41 against which the terminal is pressed.
- Said support surface 41 is formed with a rounded corner 42 which allows provision of two successive curved sections of the mounting portion.
- the bending hammer experiences a rotating movement as indicated by the arrow.
- Fig. 3d shows the connector with a second terminal 43 inserted into the second receiving area and formed into shape.
- the second terminal 43 also has a hairpin contact section and a bent mounting section.
- a hold-down device is then applied against to lower side of the bottom wall of the housing so as to maintain the connector in place.
- Fig. 3e illustrates the final seating step of the terminals into the connector housing.
- a pressing device 45 is used to push the terminals 32, 42 further into the contact receiving area in their final position until the terminal mounting portions abut against the projections 36 which act as stop means. Coplanarity of the mounting portions is achieved thanks to the projection (pressure means) 36.
- the present invention is not limited by what has been particularly shown and described hereinabove.
- the present invention could advantageously be used in a connector, whether a receptacle or a header type connector having surface mount terminals provided with any kind of mating portions, e.g. dual beam contact, spring blade contact, pin contact, hairpin contact .
