Abstract

A method and apparatus for providing in a communications system which supports the transmission of short messages, the end-to-end encryption of a message of greater length than the standard short message length of the communications system. The longer message (1) to be transmitted is encrypted as a whole, and an encryption header (5, 6, 7) generated for the encrypted message (4). The encrypted message (8, 9) and its encryption header (5, 6, 7) are then divided into a plurality of shorter parts, (14, 17, 18), which shorter parts are then each included in one of a plurality of short messages (11, 15, 16) of the communications system that are transmitted to the intended recipient to thereby deliver the encrypted original message to the intended recipient.
