Abstract
A system is provided for viewing information at a remote terminal connected to a central database and in particular to information regarding a person with respect to identification, medical information, allergies, medication prescribed and any other pertinent information.
Description
MEDICAL AID CARD
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a card to access medical information and the like.
BACKROUND ART
The method currently utilised to check on a patient's medical history is to phone a medical aid company and check up on the patient's health status, fiduciary benefits, allergies and the like.
This system is a time consuming process with drawbacks such as limited operator assistance and human error. A further drawback of the system is that it creates an opportunity for fraud on the part of the patient or the practitioner treating the patient.
In an attempt to circumvent this system a network has been set up in the pharmaceutical field to review a patient's medical aid benefits before issuing any medication. This system is satisfactory for pharmaceutical purposes, but usually it does not mention the patient's medical history or any allergies and is therefore not of much use to medical practitioners or emergency personnel.
It is an object of this invention to provide fast and easy access to the medical history, allergies, financial benefits and any other relevant information to medical practitioners, emergency personnel and the like.
It is a further object of the invention to prevent or at least dramatically reduce medical aid fraud.
DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention a system to view information includes a remote terminal which connects to a central database to retrieve information, and means to identify the person/s about whose information is sought.
In a preferred form of the invention the means comprises a card or similar disc and includes a magnetic strip and/or an electronic chip and/or a barcode and/or a similar identification method; and the central database includes a device to read and interpret the strip, chip, code or the like as well as a screen to display the information.
The terminal may connect to a database which may contain any relevant medical or other information and display it on the screen. The database may be updated in real time, so each time there is a change in any status of the patient or other person the data base is updated.
These updates may relate to treatment received, medication prescribed, allergies or any other information.
The terminal may be in the form of a handheld device for easy use by emergency personnel.
The system may include additional security measures such as displaying an identification photograph or retinal scan of the person, a fingerprint or thumbprint identification device or the like to rule out, or at least greatly reduce fraud.
Optional additional features may include a tray or the like adapted to recognize tablets and thereby identify the tablets dispensed according to an active ingredient, brand, size and any other pertinent features.
A bar code reader may be provided to read the bar code on boxed items dispensed.
The system may be adapted to operate from telephone lines or the like or by internet or radio.
Examples of information that may be relevant: Chronic medication Date of dispensation of medication Cover for dependants on the medical aid Allergies of patient
Any co-payments that needs to be made by the patient Benefits can be verified at any time Chronic medical condition or disabilities
Any other information which may be useful in an emergency such as contact numbers and the like.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a card according to the invention; Figure 2 is a schematic of the system according to the invention, and Figure 3 is a diagrammatic representation of a simple unit in the form of a laptop.
BESTMODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
In Figures 1 and 2 a card 10 includes a magnetic strip 12 and/or a SIM card chip or smart card 14. The card can also include a bar code reader 15 or any similar identification method which may be scanned or otherwise read by a remote terminal 16.
In use the card is read by a scanner 17 connected to the terminal, which identifies the owner of the card and submits the information to a central database 18 over fixed landlines 20 or via cellular phone towers 22. The database retrieves all relevant information from its memory and relays it back to the remote terminal in the same manner as above, and the terminal displays it on a screen.
In Figure 3 the terminal includes a LCD plasma screen 40 with a touch pad 42 to access the information. In addition, a thumbprint pad 44 is provided and a tablet tray 46. A tablet recognition sensor 48 is provided to identify tablets dispensed according to size, shape, active ingredient/s or brand, as well as a bar code sensor 50, as described above.
If the medical practitioner prescribes medication or needs to add any other relevant information to the database he may do so.
Claims
1. A system to view medical and related information pertaining to a patient characterised by a central database adapted to store, display medical information and relay such information to a remote terminal, the remote including an interface for a patient card to receive personal and identifying information relating to the patient and to relay such information to the central database for confirmation and for initiating a return relay pertaining to one or more items of information relating to chronic medication allergies, disabilities, medical aid details, dependants, and other necessary information.
2. A system to view medical and related information characterised in that the patient card includes a magnetic strip, electronic chip, barcode or the like for relating identification information to central database, and having display means for receiving return relay information from the central database.
3. A system to view medical and related information characterised in that the central database includes means to add, subtract or change the down-loaded information from time to time.
