Abstract
Composition containing pancreatic enzyme is disclosed for cosmetic use in the treatment of acne. Formulations of the composition including gels and creams are disclosed for topical use.
Description
COSMETIC COMPOSITION CONTAINING PANCREATIC ENZYME
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to cosmetic compositions and more particularly to a composition containing pancreatic enzyme as the active ingredient.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Skin problems include sever skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and the like and less severe skin conditions such as wrinkles, acne and dry skin.
Acne affects millions of people worldwide and is especially problematic in the adolescent group. Acne is caused by the formation of a keratin plug in the hair follicle which leads to obstruction of the natural drainage of the follicle.
This results in inflammation, swelling and pain and possible damages to the skin.
In the past, treatment has included compositions containing a variety of active ingredients such as organic and inorganic acids, steroids, fungicides, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory substances.
There are many existing topical medicines for acne. These come in creams, gels and solutions, etc. The active ingredients commonly used include salicylic acid, sulfur, benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics, retinoids, etc.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It has now been found that a composition comprising pancreatic enzyme, a protein secreted by the pancreas that aids in the digestion of food, is effective when topically applied to prevent as well as help alleviate skin condition such as acne.
The present invention then relates to a cosmetic composition comprising pancreatic enzyme present in an amount of about 0.5 weight %.
The present invention also relates to a method of treating acne with a gel or cream of a composition containing pancreatic enzyme.
The method comprises applying to the affected area of the body an effective amount of a composition containing pancreatic enzyme.
The composition of this invention is formulated preferably as gels and creams. Suitable carriers include de-ionized water as the vehicle; Carbopol Ultrez 20 as rheology modifier; glycerine as humectant; triethanolamine as pH adjustor; disodium EDTA as chelating agent; Silsoft 149 and Silsoft L45 as emollient; SF1204 as non-greasy agent; Velvesil 125 to impart powdery/tack- free skin feel; Azeloglycina as sebum regulator; sodium lactate as moisturizer; glycolic acid as exfoliating agent and Phenonip as preservative.
The present composition unsuspectedly provide highly effective treatment for acne without producing unwanted side-effects.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
It has now been found that effective treatment of acne can be achieved with composition which include pancreatic enzyme as the active ingredient.
The composition of the present invention can be prepared in the form of a gel or cream suited to topical administration. When in the form of a gel or cream, it is usually necessary to dissolve the enzyme in a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle such as de-ionized water, and then to admix this solution in a conventional manner with a suitable gel or cream base in order to prepare the pharmaceutical composition.
The following example illustrates a formulation according to the present invention.
A. Composition
B. Procedure
1. Set aside 5% of Deionized Water for Enzyme dissolution.
2. In the main mixing kettle, hydrate Carbopol Ultrez 20 in 95% deionized water for at least 20 minutes or until homogeneous.
3. Once the Carbopol Ultrez 20 is fully hydrated, add glycolic acid, sodium lactate and disodium EDTA with 1 minute interval and mix for 10 minutes.
4. Check pH of solution and adjust with Triethanolamine to 5.0.
5. Add Glycerine into the main mixing kettle and mix for 10 minutes.
6. Add the following raw material to the main mixing kettle in 2-minute interval:
Silsoft 149 Silsoft L45 SF1204 Velvesil 125 Mix until homogeneous
7. In a separate container, dissolve the Enzyme in deionized water and mix until homogeneous.
8. Add Azeloglycina and the enzyme solution to the main mixing kettle.
9. Add the preservative and mix until homogeneous.
10. Check pH.
C. Specifications Appearance: Clear, transparent gel Color: Colorless pH: 5.5-5.75 Viscosity: 20,000 cPs - 30,200 cPs
The foregoing detailed description has been directed to particular embodiment of the invention for purposes of clarity of understanding. It will be apparent however, to those skilled in the art that modifications and changes in the composition and process set forth may be made thereto without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention.
