Abstract

A process by which fine high-performance gel beads having a useful microorganism immobilized thereto at a high density can be efficiently and safely mass-produced at low cost in an extremely easy manner. The particle size of the beads can be regulated to any desired value in a wide range. A first W/O emulsion obtained by dispersing in an oil phase a useful microorganism and an aqueous solution containing a water-soluble polymer for gel formation is mixed with stirring with a second W/O emulsion obtained by dispersing in an oil phase an aqueous solution containing polyvalent cations to thereby cause droplets of the dispersed phases in both W/O emulsions to collide with one another. Thus, gel beads containing the useful microorganism immobilized to inner parts thereof are yielded.
