Abstract

　電解質膜にかかる力学的負荷を抑えることができ、且つ、中央部に十分な単位面積当たりの荷重をかけることができる燃料電池の単セルを提供する。 　固体高分子電解質膜の一面側にアノード触媒層及びガス拡散層を含むアノード電極を有し、他面側にカソード触媒層及びガス拡散層を含むカソード電極を有する膜・電極接合体と、一対のセパレータとを有する燃料電池の単セルであって、前記固体高分子電解質膜のアノード側及びカソード側のうち少なくとも一面側において、前記アノード又はカソード触媒層は、前記固体高分子電解質膜及び前記ガス拡散層よりも一回り小さい寸法及び形状を有し、且つ、当該アノード又はカソード触媒層の外周からはみ出した前記固体高分子電解質膜の外周縁部と、前記ガス拡散層の外周縁部とが対峙しており、対峙しあう当該高分子電解質膜の外周縁部と当該ガス拡散層の外周縁部の間に介在する第一の部位、及び、前記アノード又はカソード触媒層の外周と重なる第二の部位を有する枠形状の保護層が設けられ、さらに単セル厚さ調整層を有し、且つ、当該単セル厚さ調整層は、前記保護層の第二の部位が存在する領域における単セルの厚さが、当該保護層が存在しない中央部における当該単セルの厚さ以下になるように、前記保護層の第二の部位が存在する領域において前記中央部における前記単セル厚さ調整層の厚さよりも薄いか又は存在しないことを特徴とする、燃料電池の単セル。
