Abstract

An azo compound for anisotropic films which exhibits absorption mainly in a short wavelength region and which is useful as a polarizing film enabling display with a wide variety of colors. An azo compound whose maximum absorption wavelength in a film is shorter than the wavelength λ(k)nm defined by formula (1), wherein the angle ϑ between the major absorption axis of the molecule and the major axis of the molecule is 1.5° or below. (1) wherein the constants A, B, C, D and δλ are as follows: A= -18.069 B= 40.645 C= 0.79764 D= -2.0793 δλ= 67 and k is an aspect ratio of the azo compound molecule.
