Abstract

A glass material having a low yield point is obtained without relying on a glass composition development. Also obtained are: an optical element which has a fine structure and can be mass-produced at low cost; and a process for producing the element. The glass material is one obtained from a glass containing alkali ions by replacing part of the alkali ions contained in the glass with other ions by the ion-exchange method to form a surface layer having a reduced yield point. An optical element such as a diffraction grating is obtained by introducing ions into a surface layer of a glass by the ion-exchange method to change the composition of the surface layer and thereby lower the yield point of the surface layer and forming a fine structure in the resultant surface layer by glass molding.
