Description
DEVICE FOR MUSCULAR TREATMENT
Technical field of the invention
The present invention relates to a device for muscular treatment, which device comprises at least one ball.
State of the art
A device known from JP9154977 comprises a ball-shaped element disposed on a handle. By means of that device the user can massage his/her back by holding the handle and moving the ball-shaped element to and fro across the back.
Objects and features of the invention
A primary object of the present invention is to propose a device of the kind defined in the introduction whereby the user him/herself manages the device which generates the muscular treatment.
Another object of the present invention is that the type of muscular treatment can be varied. A further object of the present invention is that the device should be easy to carry and not occupy much space.
At least the primary object of the present invention is achieved by a device provided with the features indicated in the independent claim 1 set out below. Preferred embodiments are defined in the dependent claims.
Brief description of the drawings
An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the attached drawings, in which: Fig. 1 depicts a plan view of a device according to the present invention in which two balls are disposed beside the device; Fig. 2 depicts a perspective view of the device according to
Fig. 1, in which one side of the device is open and one of the balls is accommodated in the device;
Fig. 3 depicts the device attached to a backrest of a chair, with a user sitting in the chair; and Fig. 4 depicts the device attached to a user, with the user sitting on a chair.
Detailed description of a preferred embodiment of the invention
The device according to the present invention depicted in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises an elongate cover 1 which in the embodiment depicted is kidney-shaped in plan view, i.e. in the view depicted in Fig. 1. The longitudinal direction L of the cover is marked in Fig. 1. The cover 1 comprises two substantially similar elements 2 and 4 which are joined to one another along the major part of their peripheries. The cover 1 is nevertheless provided on one of its long sides with a slit in which a zip fastener is fitted. The zip fastener is not depicted specifically but is indicated by a toggle 3 in Figs. 1 and 2. In a conventional manner, the user takes hold of the toggle 3 and moves it along the cover 1 in order to close/open the slit. Fig. 2 depicts a state in which the slit defines an aperture 5, i.e. the inside of the cover 1 is accessible. The cover 1 is preferably made of a fabric of the strong linen type.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, the cover 1 is provided on one side with means for accommodating a first strap 7 which extends in the longitudinal direction of the cover 1, and two second straps 9 which extend transversely to the first strap 7. These means for accommodating the straps 7 and 9 take preferably the form of pieces of fabric 10 sewn onto one side of the cover 1 in the region of the respective ends of the cover 1. Each of the pieces of fabric 10 is so configured that it defines two passages substantially perpendicular to one another, comprising a wider passage 11 intended to accommodate the first strap 7, and a narrower passage 12 intended to accommodate one of the second straps 9. The passages 11, 12 are preferably so configured that they are at different levels, i.e. the straps 7, 9 do not interfere with one another when they are pushed into the respective passages. In the embodiment depicted in Figs. 1 and 2, the device according to the present invention is thus provided with a first strap 7 and two second straps 9. These straps may either be in the form of a tying strap, its ends being connected by a knot, or in the form of a belt with its ends connected by some suitable type of buckle.
Fig. 1 also depicts two balls 15 whose function will be described in more detail below. The balls 15 have preferably a diameter of 40-45 mm. The material of the balls 15 preferably comprises plastic and more specifically PVC. The balls 15 are relatively hard but nevertheless have a certain elasticity. The characteristics of the balls 15 correspond generally to those of so-called bouncing balls.
Fig. 2 depicts the cover 1 in a state in which the slit defines an aperture 5. As illustrated in Fig. 2, two compartments 16 are disposed within the cover 1, each compartment 16 being intended to accommodate a ball 15. The division into two compartments 16 is by a divider 17, preferably made of fabric, which is sewn to one element 4 of the cover 1 by a seam 18. The divider 17 is also fastened to the cover 1 in the region of the ends of the cover 1. A space 19 is thus also formed between the upper element 2 in Fig. 2 of the cover 1 and the divider 17, which space 19 extends in principle along the whole length of the cover 1. The function of this space 19 will be described in more detail below. In Fig. 2, one ball 15 is accommodated in its respective compartment 16, while the other ball 15 is outside the cover 1. The device according to the present invention can be used with only one ball 15 accommodated within the cover 1. This means entails the aperture 5 being eliminated by activation of the zip fastener when only one ball 15 is accommodated within the cover 1. The muscular treatment for which the device according to the present invention is thus preferably used is for applying pressure at so-called trigger points.
The device according to the present invention may also be used with balls 15 accommodated in both of the compartments 16, in which case the muscular treatment thereby applied will resemble massage. In this context it should be noted that the two compartments 16 define separate compartments for the balls 15, which are thus separated in the longitudinal direction of the first strap 7/the cover 1. This means that the balls 15 can be oriented so that they are each on their respective side of the user's spine.
The space 19 between the divider 17 and one element 2 of the cover 1 can with advantage be used for accommodating one
or more bags of cherry stones, which bags have with advantage a shape corresponding to the cover 1 in length and width. An advantage of cherry stones is that they can be heated or cooled and that they retain heat/cold for about 25 minutes. If the space 19 is used to accommodate, for example, cherry stones, it is normally not suitable that balls 15 are accommodated in the compartments 16. If the space 19 accommodates a warming/cooling medium, e.g. cherry stones, the device according to the present invention effects muscular treatment in the form either of heat treatment or of cooling.
Fig. 3 depicts schematically how the device according to the present invention may be used. This involves the device being fitted on the backrest R of a chair, which is effected with advantage in such a way that the first strap 7 is stretched round the backrest R and is tightened sufficiently for the device to remain at a desired level on the backrest R. Thereafter the user leans towards the device and effects the desired treatment, which may for example mean exerting pressure at a trigger point if only one ball 15 is accommodated in the cover 1, or applying massage if two balls 15 are accommodated in the cover 1. In the latter case it is advantageous that the user moves relative to the device in order to perform massage of a certain portion of the back. In this context it should be noted that the backrest R depicted in Fig. 3 may be part of a vehicle seat whereby both the driver and passengers can apply muscular treatment while the vehicle is on the move. As illustrated in Fig. 3, the second straps 9 have been removed from the device depicted.
Fig. 4 depicts schematically an alternative mode of use of the device according to the present invention. As illustrated in Fig. 4, the device is fastened to a user in such a way that the cover 1 is on the user's back. The device is fastened to the user by the first strap 7, which is tightened as desired but not so much that the user is inconvenienced. The user sits on a chair and applies muscular treatment to his/her back by leaning against the backrest R of the chair. This is in principle done in the same way as in the use according to Fig. 3. In the use illustrated in Fig. 4, the second straps 9 have likewise been removed.
Using the second straps 9 is relevant when the user wishes to place the device according to the present invention high up on the back or even in the region of the shoulders. In such cases it may be advantageous to use the second straps 9 to achieve correct positioning of the device on the user' s back. The second straps 9 will then in principle act like the shoulder straps of a rucksack. In such cases the first strap 7 may be removed.
Conceivable modifications of the invention
In the embodiment described above, three spaces are disposed within the cover 1, viz. two compartments 16 for balls 15 and a further space for a heating/cooling medium, e.g. cherry stones. Within the scope of the present invention it is conceivable that the cover may only have two compartments for balls, i.e. no space for a heating/cooling medium.
For the sake of clarity, it should be noted that the heating/cooling medium need not take the form of cherry stones. Other heating/cooling media with substantially corresponding characteristics are conceivable within the scope of the present invention. Such heating/cooling media may also be in liquid form.
In the embodiment described above, the device is provided with a first strap 7 and/or second straps 9, but alternative means for fastening the cover 1 are also conceivable within the scope of the present invention. Some form of harness serves as a conceivable alternative if all that is required is to place the cover firmly on the user, i.e. a human being.
In the cover 1 described above, the straps 7, 9 are connected to the cover 1 by pieces of fabric which define passages for the straps 7, 9, but alternative arrangements for fastening the straps 7, 9 to the cover 1 are conceivable within the scope of the present invention, such as, by way of non-limitative examples, loops, Velcro and press studs. In the embodiment described above, it is also conceivable that a loop be disposed between the wider passages 11, so that the first strap 7 is also accommodated in the loop.
