Definitions
- the present invention relates to a confectionery product package.
- Confectionery products are widely consumed throughout the world. Most of theses products are packaged at the location where they are manufactured, for distribution and sale through wholesale and retail channels. The packaging takes on various forms. Some time the products are shipped to stores in bulk boxes, where a desired amount of the confectionary is divided from the bulk amount and sold without further packaging. However, for the most part, confectionery products are packaged in a form that they can be sold in the package in which they are distributed. The package may hold a quantity of confectionery that is intended to be stored at the home of the consumer, but many confections are packaged in packages that are intended to be placed in the pocket or purse of the consumer for enjoyment throughout the day when the consumer is away from home.
- Chewing gum is a good example of this type of confectionery.
- Chewing gum is currently available to consumers in a variety of different formats. These include stick gum, slab gum, pellet gum, extruded gum, and others. While some chewing gum products are packaged with 30 pieces or more in a package, most of the time chewing gum is sold in packages that are intended to be carried in a purse of pocket, and contain five to 10 pieces per package. These individual packages are often distributed in cartons that may contain 12-20 or more individual packages. The cartons are designed for display, so that customers may select a package from the carton for purchase. [0005] While such packaging has won wide spread approval, there is also a desire to purchase confectionery products in bulk, frequently at less cost per piece than if an individual package is purchased.
- the individual confectionery product be portable, meaning that some secondary packaging is provided so that the product may be stored or placed in a purse, jacket, or pants pocket without the individual pieces of the confectionery coming into contact with foreign material, such as lint or dirt.
- foreign material such as lint or dirt.
- an individual could purchase an entire carton of chewing gum, and then place individual packages of gum in his pocket, usually the cartons are not labeled or priced for sale as an entire carton. Plus an entire carton may contain more product than a normal purchaser would plan to consume in a reasonable amount of time, when the product is at its maximum freshness.
- a confectionery product package includes a binding and a plurality of identical packets each connected to the binding by a tear strip, wherein each individual packet holds confectionery product.
- a confectionery product package includes a binding and at least three packets connected to the binding by a tear strip, wherein each individual packet holds confectionery product
- a confectionery product package includes a binding and a plurality of packets connected to the binding by a tear strip, wherein each individual packet holds confectionery product and the binding is a separate structure to which each packet is connected.
- the confectionery product package includes a plurality of packets containing confectionery, each packet being formed from a flexible material shaped into a pouch to form a product enclosure region, the pouch having at least one side formed by sealing the flexible material together at that side, and an extension extending outwardly on that side from the product enclosure region of the packet, the extension included a sealed area that seals the side of the packet to which the extension is attached, and a weakened section crossing the extension, with at least a portion of the sealed area being located between the weakened section and the product enclosure region, and leaving a detachable portion of the extension outward of the weakened section; and the plurality of packets being bound together using their respective detachable portions.
- a confectionery product package includes at least first and second packets each holding confectionery product and having a front surface, a back surface, a first side and an opening for removing the confectionery product from the packet; wherein the packets are connected together by detachable portions adjacent said first sides, and the packets are arranged such that the front surface of the second packet overlies the back surface of the first packet, and the opening of each packet is oriented in the same direction with respect to the remainder of the packets in the package.

- the present invention is directed to a confectionery product package.
- a particular confectionery for which the invention may be used is chewing gum.
- the following discussion thus discusses a package for chewing gum by way of example.
- An embodiment of the package is shown in Fig. 1.
- the package 10 includes a plurality of individual packets 12. (The package 10 might also be called a dispenser, since packets may be dispensed from it.)
- the individual packets 12 are connected to a binding 14 by tear strips containing perforations 16.
- the binding 14 is a separate structure to which each packet is connected.
- the tear strips 16 allow the individual packets 12 to be easily removed from the package 10.
- the package 10 may include two or more packets 12.
- the package 10 includes at least three, and as many as five or more packets 12.
- the packets 12 each comprise a front surface 24 and a back surface 29 defining the length and width of each packet 12.
- the packets are connected together in the package 10 adjacent their top sides.
- the packets 12 may be disposed on top of one another in the package 10, with the front surface 24 of a second packet adjacent the bottom surface 29 of a first packet.
- the packets are arranged such that the front surface of the second packet overlies the back surface of the first packet, and the opening of each packet is oriented in the same direction with respect to the remainder of the packets in the package.
- the third packet has a front surface that overlies the back surface of the second packet, and the opening of the third packet is oriented in the same direction with respect to the remainder of the packet as the openings of the first and second packets are oriented.
- Fig. 2 shows one embodiment of a packet 12 from the package 10 of Fig. 1.
- the packet 12 may be rectangular in shape and thin relative to its length and width, to facilitate stacking of packets 12 in the package 10.
- the packet 12 includes a pouch 18 and a flap 20.
- the pouch 18 is designed to hold a plurality of pieces 22 of gum or other confectionery product.
- the gum pieces 22 may be rectangular in shape, or other shapes. In one embodiment, the pouch 18 holds five gum pieces 22.
- the flap 20 is hingedly connected to the pouch 18 along fold line 23.
- the top surface 24 of pouch 18 may include a thumb cutout 26 to aid in removing the gum pieces 22.
- the flap 20 may be folded over the opening 28 of the pouch 18.
- the end 21 of the flap 20 may be releasably attached to the top surface 24 of the packet 12.
- the releasable attachment may be by an adhesive.
- the end 21 of the flap 20 may be tucked into packet opening 28.
- the perforations 16 connecting the packet 12 to the binding 14 may be disposed on the packet end 25 with the flap 20, the packet end 27 opposite the flap 20, or any other portion of the packet 12.
- the tear strip is disposed adjacent the pouch opening. If the tear strip is located along end 27, the tear strip would be on a first end of the packet and the pouch opening would be disposed on a second end of the packet.
- the top surface 24 may be translucent to allow a user to see the gum pieces 22.
- the pouch 18 is preferably made from a flexible material such as plastic or paper to allow the gum pieces 22 to be squeezed out by a user.
- the packet 12 may be a flexible film package that is laser scored, especially for perforations or tear strips 16.
- the material of packet 12 may formed from a composite or laminate such that one layer can be scored with a laser while the other layer resists scoring.
- the material may be a laminate of paper and metal or foil, or a laminate of a flexible plastic material and metal or foil.
- the packet 12 may also be made from semi-flexible plastic or from paperboard.
- the top surface 24 of the packet 12 may be transparent, translucent, or opaque. The translucent or transparent surface may help the user to see how much gum is left in the packet 12.
- the packet 12 is preferably sized to conveniently fit in the pocket 30 of a user.
- the user grasps one packet 12 from the package 10 and tears it from the binding 14. Flap 20 is flipped open to expose the opening 28. The user then squeezes the pouch 18 to force a stick of gum 22 toward the opening 28. The user's thumb may then be inserted into the cutout 26 to remove a piece of gum 22 from the pouch 18.
- the gum pieces 22 may be wrapped with foil and/or paper.
- the wrapper (not shown) may be releasably adhered to the inside of the packet 12 so that the gum pieces 22 do not get jostled around.
- the elongated gum pieces 22 may be oriented parallel to the opening 28 (as shown in the figures) or perpendicular to the opening 28. The gum pieces 22 may also be not wrapped.
- the confectionery product package 40 includes a plurality of packets containing confectionery, each packet being formed from a flexible material shaped into a pouch to form a product enclosure region.
- the pouch has at least one side formed by sealing the flexible material together at that side, and an extension extending outwardly on that side from the product enclosure region of the packet.
- the extension includes a sealed area that seals the side of the packet to which the extension is attached, and a weakened section crossing the extension, with at least a portion of the sealed area being located between the weakened section and the product enclosure region. This leaves a detachable portion of the extension outward of the weakened section.
- the plurality of packets are bound together using their respective detachable portions.
- the identical packets 42, 44, 46 and 48 are each made with a flexible sheet of material folded along one side of the packet and sealed together aiong three sides of the packet with fin seals 56, 58 and 60 to form an envelope. Chewing gum pieces 43 are placed in the folded material before the fsn seal 60 is made.
- the binding 52 is made using the extension that includes fin seal 56 along one side of each of the packets. Perforations are made through the sheet materia! within the confines of the fin seal, thus providing a tear strip.
- the binding of fin seals 56 may be achieved in a number of ways. A separate piece of material, like binding 14, may be secured to the fin seals 56.
- the fin seals 56 may be adhesively laminated together.
- a stitching may be used to join the fin seals together, the stitching operation also forming the perforations.
- the reclosable packets 42, 44, 46 and 48 may be made from a laminated sheet comprising an inner layer and an outer layer wherein the inner layer is oriented toward the inside of the packet and the outer layer is oriented toward the outside of the packet. The opening is made by using laser scoring.
- a first score line extends substantially through the inner layer but does not extend into the outer layer.
- a second score line extends at least substantially through the outer layer but does not extend into the inner layer.
- the first and second score lines are laterally offset from each other to define an opening panel in the packet, a marginal region 66 between the first and second score lines, and a surrounding region of the sheet outside of the marginal region.
- a laminating adhesive is disposed between the inner and outer layers and extends substantially throughout the surrounding region.
- a releasable adhesive may be disposed between the inner and outer layers in the marginal region. It may be desirable to provide a portion of the region that is free of the releasable adhesive to define a tongue or grip for lifting the opening panel and to provide a tolerance for imprecision in application of the adhesives. Similarly, a portion of the surrounding region may be free of laminating adhesive to allow for imprecision in the application of adhesive. Typically, the adhesive free areas will surround the boundary of the marginal and surrounding regions,
- the packets 42, 44, 46 and 48 are generally a parallelepiped shape and formed of any suitable material. Without desiring to being limited to any particular configuration or material, it is contemplated that the packet can be formed of a flexible plastic material, such as polyethylene (including but not limited to low density polyethylene and linear low-density polyethylene), polypropylene, mixtures or laminates of such, and other flexible plastics.
- the packet could also be formed from metal ized plastics, paper, laminated paper material, or other laminates.
- the packets 42, 44, 46 and 48 are formed from a laminate that includes a polypropylene film and optionally a polyethylene film. In one aspect, the packets 42, 44, 46 and 48 are formed from a laminate that includes a metal layer disposed between two layers of polypropylene. [0030] Each packet 12, 42, 44, 46 and 48 may contain different flavors or different types of gum or different confectionery pieces from the other packets 12, 42, 44, 46 and 48 in the package 10 or 40.
- tab gum products and other confectionery products can be sold in a bulk quantity in one package, and the package separated into individual packets that are portable but provide protection for the products in the packet. Since the preferred packets are identical, they can be more easily manufactured. No extra manufacturing steps are needed to make the packets to be used in the package compared to packets that are intended for individual retail sale. However, the packets can be connected together in an inexpensive fashion to make a package that can be sold as a single bulk unit. The same technique can be used to bind the packets together, regardless if there are only two, or many more packets, in the package. The binding may be formed with a hole so that the package can hang on a peg for display.
