Definitions
- the invention relates to a training aid for writing in the form of a writing training kit. It relates also to a planar member and to an elongate body forming part of the writing training kit.
- a writing training kit for use in training persons to write, the writing training kit including:
- an elongate body representing a writing instrument which a person can displace along the slot from the initiation position defined by said entrance opening in a direction towards the termination position defined by said exit opening thereby to accustom himself with the formation of the symbol in writing
- the planar member and the elongate body being configured to cooperate with one another in an arrangement wherein insertion of an end of the elongate body into the entrance and exit openings is permitted, but wherein said end of the elongate body is captured within the slot when located at a position intermediate the entrance and exit openings in the slot, thereby permitting displacement of the elongate body along the slot but preventing removal of the elongate body therefrom.
- Each planar member of the writing training kit may include guide means for guiding the displacement of the elongate body along the slot between the initiation position and the termination position, thereby guiding the elongate body along a required displacement path for forming the symbol defined by the slot, between the initiation position and the termination position.
- the slot of the planar member may include at least two slot segments which intersect one another, the guide means including gate elements which are located adjacent the intersection of the slot segments for allowing access into and along one of the slot segments and preventing access into the other slot segment, thereby guiding the elongate body along its required displacement path for the formation of the symbol.
- the elongate body of the writing training kit may have a neck formation near one end thereof, terminating in an enlarged capture formation, the neck formation being sufficiently narrow for it to be accommodated within the slot of the planar member, the capture formation having cross-sectional dimensions that are relatively smaller than the dimensions of the entrance and exit openings, yet relatively larger than the width of the slot, thereby permitting the capture formation to be received within the entrance and exit openings but preventing the removal of the capture formation from the slot in a direction transverse to the plane of the planar member.
- the planar member may have a lower side which can be located on a support surface and an upper side in which the slot is formed, the planar member defining an elongate cavity under the slot which has a width relatively wider than the width of the slot, within which the capture formation can be accomodated, the entrance and exit openings of the planar member leading into the cavity thereby permitting the capture formation of the elongate body to be received within the cavity, with the neck formation being received within the slot when the elongate body is displaced along the slot, in use.
- the symbol defined by the slot may be any one of a number, block letter in lower case, block letter in upper case, cursive letter in lower case and cursive letter in upper case.
- the writing training kit may include a set of planar members.
- the writing training kit may include a set of planar members which is adapted for use in training persons in the formation of cursive letters, each planar member of the set defining a slot forming an individual letter, wherein the entrance and exit openings of each planar member are located at predetermined positions along the edges of the planar member thereby providing for the planar members to be located adjacent one another in an arrangement wherein the entrance opening of one planar member is located adjacent the exit opening of the adjacent planar member thereby linking the slots of adjacent planar members allowing joining of the letters to one another.
- Each planar member of the set of planar members may include releasable securing formations so as to permit adjacent planar members to be releasably secured to one another in a co-planar arrangement.
- the planar member of the writing training kit may define a number of slots which each define a different symbol.
- the invention extends to the planar member of the writing training kit, as described and defined hereinabove.
- the invention extends to the elongate body of the writing training kit, as described and defined hereinabove.
- Figure 1 shows a top view of a planar member of a writing training kit in accordance with the invention
- Figure 2 illustrates in top view the mode of use of the planar member of Figure 1 ;
- Figure 3 shows a sectional side view of the planar member of Figure 1 , sectioned along section line Ill-Ill of Figure 2;
- Figure 4 shows a side view of an elongate body for use with the writing training kit in accordance with the invention
- Figure 5 illustrates the slot configuration of a complete set of planar members for use in training persons in the formation of lower case block letters
- Figure 6 illustrates in top view, the use of a further set of planar members for training cursive writing
- Figure 7 shows an end view of the planar members illustrated in Figure 6.
- a writing training kit in accordance with the invention, includes at least one set of planar members, respectively associated with the individual letters of the alphabet, one planar member of the set, associated with the letter "f " for lower case cursive writing, being illustrated and being designated generally by the reference numeral 10.
- the planar member 10 is a flat, block-type element which is formed of three sheet material layers including a top layer 12 defining the upper side of the planar member, a bottom layer 14 defining the lower side of the planar member and an intermediate layer 16 sandwiched between the layers 12 and 14 (as shown clearly in Figure 3 of the drawings).
- the intermediate layer 16 spaces the top layer 12 from the bottom layer 14 and provides for a hollow cavity 18 to be defined between the layers 12 and 14 in a central region of the planar member 10, this again being illustrated clearly in Figure 3 of the drawings.
- the three layers 12, 14 and 16 forming the planar member 10 may be formed of any suitable material, including a synthetic plastics material, timber, or the like.
- the top layer of the planar member 10 has a slot 20 formed therein that defines the letter "/" for lower case cursive writing.
- the top layer of the planar member further defines an entrance opening 22 and an exit opening 24 which are slightly enlarged relative to the slot as shown to permit a capture formation of an elongate body, representing a writing instrument, to enter the slot 20, as is described in more detail hereafter.
- the planar member 10 has guide means in the form of four spring-loaded gate elements 26 located within the cavity 18 defined between the top layer 12 and bottom layer 14 of the planar member 10, the gate elements serving to guide an elongate body representing a writing instrument, along the slot 20 from an initiation position defined at entrance opening 22 to a termination position defined at exit opening 24 along a required path for forming the letter, as is described further hereafter.
- planar members forming a part of a writing training kit is greatly variable, both in general construction and in relation to the mode in which an elongate body, representing a writing instrument, is guided to be displaced along the required path as defined by a slot within the planar member.
- Figure 4 illustrates a typical elongate body that represents a writing instrument, the body being designated generally by the numeral 30.
- the body 30 includes an elongate stem 32 that defines a neck formation 34 which terminates in an enlarged spherical capture formation 36, the capture formation 36 being relatively smaller in size than the size of the openings, thereby to permit its insertion into the entrance opening 22 defined by the planar member 10, thus entering the central cavity 18 defined within the planar member 10.
- the body 30 When so located, and with particular reference to Figure 2 of the drawings, the body 30 can be displaced in the direction of arrow 38 along the slot 20, it being apparent that as soon as the body is displaced from the entrance opening 22, that it will be trapped within the slot, insofar as the diameter of the capture formation 36 is larger than the width of the slot 20, the neck formation being sufficiently narrow for the body to be displaced along the slot.
- the gate element 26.1 As the body 30 reaches the location of the gate element 26.1 , the gate element 26.1 will be displaced against the force of the spring associated therewith, into the position illustrated in dotted lines, allowing the body 30 to cross the intersection defined by the slot 20 in this region.
- the body 30 can thus carry on along the slot in the direction indicated by the arrow 40, until it again reaches the intersection referred to, where the gate elements 26.2 and 26.3 will permit the body 30 to cross the intersection downwardly, the path of the body in this way being determined by the gate elements, to thereby provide for the body to complete a path that represents the formation of the letter involved, when the body will reach the exit opening 24 and the capture formation 36 can thus be removed from the slot.
- planar member is provided for each letter.
- Further sets of planar members also can be provided for different letter fonts, including for higher case cursive letters, higher and lower case block letters, and the like.
- Figure 5 illustrates particularly the slot configurations for planar members that can serve as a training aid for training to write lower case block letters. Particularly for forming some of these letters, e.g. "f", "k” and others, two “separated” slot segments each being associated with an entrance opening and an exit opening may be provided to form these particular letters, particularly the entrance openings, in this case, identifying which letter segment should be first formed and which should follow. This will be clearly apparent from Figure 5.
- planar members 50 of a further set of planar members of the writing training kit are illustrated, particularly members associated with the letters "d", "o” and "g", which can make up the word "dog” as illustrated.
- the planar members of this set are particularly configured to permit inter-engagement with one another as shown in Figure 7, while the entrance openings and exit openings of slots defining the individual letters are disposed so that the exit opening of the slot defining one letter is in register with the entrance opening of the slot defining the adjacent letter, thus permitting the use of these members for training cursive writing in the formation of complete words.
- the planar members have formations 52 making them releasably securable adjacent one another in a co-planar arrangement.
- the invention extends to a planar member of the type described hereinabove.
- the invention extends further to the elongate body as described hereinabove.
- the writing training kit can be used particularly by children to accustom themselves with the formation of symbols representing not only letters, but also numbers, the use of the writing training kit and, particularly, of the elongate body representing a writing instrument, in conjunction with planar members, providing for a feeling that can be generated in association with the formation of symbols and that can hence be repeated without the aid of planar members and with the use of a conventional writing instrument, in order to perfect the art of writing. It is envisaged that the use of the writing training kit will greatly facilitate teaching the art of writing, also providing for this art to be achieved in a relatively time efficient manner.
