Abstract

A deoxidant according to the invention is used for absorbing and removing oxygen in a living environment atmosphere. The deoxidant comprises a cerium oxide which has a superlattice structure similar to that of jewelry and shows reversible oxygen loss caused by forced withdrawal of oxygen. The cerium oxide is preferably one obtained by reducing an oxygen-containing cerium salt or a hydrate thereof. Further, it is preferred that the cerium oxide has an oxygen deficient structure represented by CeO2-x wherein x is 0.5 to 0.7. This cerium oxide is obtained by directly subjecting an oxygen-containing cerium salt or a hydrate thereof to reduction firing at 1000˚C or higher.
