Abstract

A manganese conversion coating process for treating a zinc substrate. In one embodiment, the process is substantially free of chromate anions and phosphate anions, the process comprising the step of : providing a zinc substrate having a manganese conversion coating by contacting a zinc substrate with a manganese conversion coating solution, wherein the manganese conversion coating solution comprises manganese ions and sufficient acid to give the manganese conversion coating solution an acidic pH. In one aspect of the invention, the manganese conversion process further includes the step of treating the zinc substrate having a manganese conversion coating with an aqueous solution comprising silicate anions.
