Abstract

The invention relates to a method for controlling, during a temporary stoppage, a four-stroke combustion engine comprising a block delimiting cylinders which define combustion chambers (5) which are equipped with pistons (7) into which there open an intake pipe (11) and an exhaust pipe (12) both provided with valves (13, 14) that can move between open positions and closed positions, the method comprising steps of detecting conditions of a temporary stoppage of the engine and of commanding that the exhaust valves be kept in the closed position once the engine has gone through an intake phase during the last engine cycle prior to the stoppage.
