Abstract

In one embodiment, a particle shutter device is provided. The device comprises a color generating material; a transparent planar electrode positioned coaxial with the color generating material; and side electrodes positioned in relation to the transparent planar electrode, the device having an off-state wherein black particles obscure the transparent planar electrode to prevent a passage of light through the transparent planar electrode and an on-state wherein the black particles are laterally displaced relative to the transparent electrode under electrostatic forces to allow the a passage of light through the transparent planar electrode.
