Description
UNIVERSAL DEVICE FOR REPEATED ADJUSTMENTS OF PLATES
INVENTION DESCRIPTION
1. FIELD OF APPLICATION
The invention relates to the device that adjusts plates for welding, that can be used repeatedly and applied to various structures.
In the International Patent Classification, it is classified as F - Mechanical engineering - Engineering in general; F 16 - Engineering elements or units; F 16 B - Devices for fastening or securing constructional elements or machine parts together, e.g. nails, bolts, circlips, clamps, clips, wedges; joints or jointing.
2. TECHNICAL PROBLEM
Plate adjustment as part of preparation of a connection for welding, especially when welding various structures of any kind, particularly in shipbuilding, is a tedious and demanding job that is to be done well, quick and with minimum efforts.
Before welding, the plate edges are to be bevelled at a certain degree. Such prepared plates are to be brought together to a position required for welding. This means that the plates are to be adjusted, or levelled, and the bevelled edges brought to the same level and a proper distance. This is a precondition to obtaining quality welded surfaces.
The technical problem that is solved by this invention relates to construction of a universal device for adjusting of plates in various positions, that can be used repeatedly.
3. STATE OF THE ART
Preparation of plate connections for welding on various metal structures, regardless of their position in space, is done by handy, provisional accessories. Such accessories are welded or tacked to the basic structure. By applying force through them, normally with wedges, structure elements are adjusted, that is, brought to the same position, corresponding to the designed distance between the plates that are to be welded. The setback of such accessories is their lack of universality, since they are normally used a single time only. The known and most often used methods of connecting and adjusting, from the point of view of costs, add to the product's cost significantly, creating higher costs of materials, treatment, transport, fitting, welding, dismantling and finalisation of the surface after welding.
Further setbacks of the present plate adjusting techniques are decreasing the overall structure quality, especially when a structure is made from plates of smaller thickness and of increased strength steels. The same applies to aluminium and other structures.
4. DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION
The essence of the invention is a device designed for repeated adjustments of plates, that enables adjustment of plates for welding on various metal structures, that is transportable and comprises two identical assemblies for tightening of plates, a pair of bolts for pushing of plates and a distant strip. Each plate adjusting assembly consists of the following elements: fixed indented jaw, movable indented jaw, fixed nut, mobile-jaw guide, bolt pushing the mobile jaw, and assembly support.
When the device is being used, one adjusting assembly is placed at one side and the other at the opposite side of the plates that are being adjusted. The distant strip is inserted between the plates and through both tightening assemblies, then it is firmly tightened between the fixed and the mobile indented jaws. By turning the
plate pushing bolts through the fixed and the mobile jaws of one assembly, the plates are brought to a single level for welding.

6. DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION EMBODIMENT AND FUNCTIONING
The universal device for repeated plate adjusting, according to this invention, enables adjustment of plates on various metal structures, especially in shipbuilding, it is transportable and can be used repeatedly. The device enables simple, fast, cheap and quality adjustment of plates, only mechanically, aimed to achieving quality welded connections.
Technically, the adjusting force is transmitted only through the bolt connections and the distant strip.
Embodiment description
The universal device for repeated plate adjustments comprises:
- assembly A for tightening of plates (two),
- bolts 11 for pushing of plates (two), and
- distant strip 12.
Assembly A for tightening of plates, Figure 2., consists of the following elements: fixed indented jaw 1 , movable indented jaw 4, fixed nut 6, bolt 8 pushing the mobile jaw, mobile-jaw guide 9, and assembly support 10.
Fixed indented jaw 1 is firmly connected to the guide 9 and the support 10. Perpendicularly through the fixed jaw there is the opening 2 with thread through which, in the process of adjusting, passes the plate adjusting bolt 11. At the lateral surface of the fixed indented jaw there are horizontal indentations by which, in the process of adjusting, the assembly A is tightened to the distant strip 12. For this purpose, the indentations 3 are thermically tempered.
Mobile indented jaw 2, Figures 5., 6., 7. and 8., at its lateral surfaces has the grooves 5 through which, when assembled, pass the guide 9 and the support 10. Thus, the mobile indented jaw glides along the guide and the assembly support. Perpendicularly through the fixed jaw there is the opening 2 with thread through which, in the process of adjusting, passes the plate adjusting bolt 11. At the lateral surface of the fixed indented jaw there are indentations by which, in the process of adjusting, the assembly A is tightened to the distant strip 12. For this purpose, the indentations 3 are thermically tempered.
In the process of adjusting, the mobile indented jaw moves between the fixed jaw 1 and the fixed nut 6.
The fixed indented jaw and the mobile indented jaw in the assembly A face each other with their indented surfaces.
The fixed nut 6 is firmly fixed to the guide 9 and the support 10. Horizontally through the fixed nut there is the opening 7 with thread through which passes the bolt 8 that pushes the mobile indented jaw 4.
The distant strip 12 is, before plate adjusting, inserted between the plates 13 and 14, and through the space between the fixed indented jaw 1 and the mobile indented jaw 4 in the assemblies A. Both ends of the distant strip are bent to prevent its slipping at the beginning of adjusting, before being tightened. On the distant strip there are fitted plate adjusting assemblies A.
Invention functioning
When adjusting the plates, as shown in the Figure 9., one assembly A is placed on top of the plate 13, and the other assembly A at underside of the plate 14. Adjusting of the plates requires just a pair of tightening bolts 11 that are placed in one assembly only. In the presented example, the bolts 11 are passed through the lower assembly A, below the plate 14.
After that, between the plates 13 and 14, Figures 10. and 11., it is inserted the distant strip 12 that passes through spaces between the fixed indented jaw 1 and the mobile indented jaw 4 in the upper and the lower assemblies A. By turning the bolt 8 in the fixed nuts 6, in the upper and the lower assemblies A, the mobile indented jaws 4 are pushed towards the fixed indented jaws 1 , in both assemblies, so that the distant strip 12 is firmly tightened between indented surfaces of the fixed and the mobile jaws. This produces friction forces that prevent slipping of the distant strip that is exposed to tension force between the plate adjusting assemblies A, where force strong enough is produced to adjust the plates.
Turning the bolt 11 , which passes through the fixed indented jaw 1 in the lower assembly A, pressure against the plate 13 is exercised until it reaches the fixed
indented jaw 1 in the upper assembly A. After that, turning of the bolt 11 , which passes through the mobile indented jaw 4 in the lower assembly A, where the head of the bolt 11 pushes the plate 14 to the mobile indented jaw 4 in the upper assembly A.
By the above described operation, Figures 12. and 13., the plates 13 and 14 are adjusted, that is, brought to the same level, and can be welded by applying electrode material into the canal 15 formed by bevelled edges of the two plates. After welding, the upper and the lower assemblies are removed from the distant strip which is then cut and ground, and the rest mechanically removed, whereby welding at that place is completed.
The assemblies are immediately ready for the next plate adjustment.
Thus, the only expandable material used in applying of this device is the distant strip.
