Definitions
- the invention relates to a portable unit for luggage comprising at least one compartment for storing the luggage and a flexible shelf system which can be extended from the portable unit, for organizing items within the portable unit.
- the portable unit can be used on excursions, such as backpacking, weekend holidays, longer trips or when hiking.
- shelf and room systems are shown to be limited in practical use.
- the shelves are fixed within the backpacks and may be considered just as much as compartments.- -
- One object of the invention is therefore to provide a portable unit for luggage comprising an improved system for organizing the items which are stored in the unit.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a portable unit for luggage comprising an organizing system which is particularly useful for organizing clothes within the portable unit.
- a portable unit for luggage comprising at least one compartment for storing the luggage wherein the at least one compartment is provided with a flexible shelf system, the shelf system being extendable out of the at least one compartment of the portable unit.
- the portable unit may also consists of more than one compartment and in such instances one, several or all the compartments may be provided with a flexible shelf system.
- the portable unit may be a back pack, a shoulder bag, a suitcase or other types of portable units which are normally used by travelers and which can be carried or moved by the traveler.
- the shelf system will normally be formed by two flexible sidewalls and a flexible back wall attached to the sidewalls.
- the sidewalls and the back wall create a substantially rectangular, U-shaped structure, wherein at least one shelf, but preferably several shelves are provided, which are attached to the sidewalls.
- the shelves may also be attached to the back wall of the shelf system.
- Another option is to form the sidewalls and the back wall in one piece of material and then the shape may be partially or wholly curved along the U-shaped circumference of the shelf system.
- the shelves will be formed with the same shape.
- the sidewalls and the back wall extend through the complete length of the shelf system. Because of the flexible sidewalls and back wall, the shelf system is collapsible such that when the shelf system is put into its compartment of the portable unit, the shelves fold nicely on top of each other with the items stored between the shelves. When the shelf system later is pulled out of its compartment the items will still lie perfectly on their shelves.
- the shelves of the shelf system may be permanently attached to the sidewalls or it may be detachably attached to the sidewalls so that the number of shelves and the distance between adjacent shelves can be adjusted. If the shelf system is made so that the shelves are detachable, the shelves may be attached to the U-shaped structure of the shelf system by Velcro, snap fasteners or other suitable means. The user can then adapt the shelf system to his or her needs by moving the shelves up and down or removing and adding shelves to the shelf system.
- the shelves of the shelf system are permanently or detachably attached to both the sidewalls and the back wall. Attaching the shelf to the back wall in addition to the sidewalls will give the shelf increased stability.
- the shelves are preferably formed with a rigid member which is placed in the front of the shelves, extending from one sidewall to the other.
- the rigid members may have the shape of a pin or a flat plate having a width which is substantially smaller than the depth of the shelves. As the shelves may be manufactured in a relatively soft material the rigid member will prevent the shelves from curving down on the middle. The rigid member will also help keeping the shelf system in its intended shape.
- the top edges of the sidewalls and the top edge of the back wall is attached to a rigid top plate.
- the rigid top plate may be made of wood, aluminum, plastic or another suitable material as long as the material is rigid. The top plate helps keeping the shelf system in its intended shape when it is extended.
- the means may comprise at least one hook which can be used to hang the extended shelf system from for instance the upper edge of a door or similar.
- the hook may also be provided with rubber sleeves to avoid leaving marks where they are hung.
- Other means are also possible like for instance strings attached to the top plate which can be used to tie the top plate to a suitable object.
- a strap of Velcro attached to the top plate or other suitable means could also be used.
- the shelves are attached to the sidewalls and the back wall in such a way that the shelf inclines downwards toward the back wall.
- the shelf system may be detachably attached to the bottom of the at least one compartment of the portable unit or it may be permanently attached to the bottom. If the shelf system is detachably attached to the bottom of the compartment, it may be attached to the bottom by snap fasteners, a zipper or Velcro.
- the shelf system may also be attached to the bottom with strings that are tied to loops. The loops may be attached to the bottom and the strings to the shelf system or vice versa.
- the shelf system may comprise a front wall and means for detachably attaching the front wall to the sidewalls. These means are preferably zippers that run along the side walls and a Velcro along the top edge. Other means are also possible, for instance could Velcro be used also along the sidewalls. Snap fasteners or other suitable means could also be used.
- the front wall may be made attachable to each shelf by using Velcro, snap fasteners or other suitable means.
- the sidewalls, the back wall and the front wall is preferably made of a light weight, mesh material.
- the shelf system may comprise a flexible middle wall so that two columns of shelves is formed.
- the middle wall will be arranged between the two sidewalls and attached to the back wall and the top plate.
- the middle wall is made of the same light weight, mesh material as the sidewalls and it is substantially parallel to the sidewalls when the shelf system is extended.
- the width of the columns of shelves may be equal or different.
- two or more separate shelf system may be provided side by side in a compartment of the portable unit.
- Figure 1 illustrates the portable unit when the unit is closed and the shelf system is packed into the main compartment of the portable unit
- Figure 2 illustrates the portable unit with the shelf system extended.
- Figure 1 illustrates the backpack 100 itself when the shelf system is packed into it and as can be seen on the figure, does not differ from other backpacks with good carrying systems.
- Figure 2 illustrates the backpack 100 with the shelf system 101 extended.
- the shelf system 101 is formed by two sidewalls 1 which are attached to a back wall 2.
- the side walls 1 and back wall 2 stretch through the complete longitudinal length of the shelf system 101, and at the upper end a top plate 3 is provided to which the sidewalls 1 and back wall 2 is attached.
- the top plate 3 is preferably made of a rigid material like aluminium, plastic or wood and will thus help to keep the shelf system in shape when it is extended.
- the sidewalls 1 and the back wall 2 form a substantially rectangular, U-shaped canal where shelves 7 are placed.
- the shelves 7 are preferably permanently attached to the sidewalls 1 and the back wall 2, but the shelves 7 " may also be detachab ⁇ y attached if an adjustable shelf system is desired.
- the shelves 7 are preferably formed with a rigid member 6 which is placed in the front of the shelves, extending from one sidewall to the other.
- the rigid member 6 may have the shape of a pin or a flat plate having a width which is substantially smaller than the depth of the shelves.
- a front wall (not shown in the figure) made of a mesh fabric is used to lock the shelves 7 in, so that the clothes do not fall out when extending shelves from the backpack or folding the shelves 7 back into the backpack.
- Velcro 8 is used to attach the front wall to the top plate 3 and two zippers 12 are used to attach the front wall of mesh fabric to the two sidewalls 1.
- the front wall 4 may be attached to the sidewalls 1 and the top plate 3 using a single zipper 12 that runs up along one sidewall, along the top plate 3 and finally down along the other sidewall 3.
- Velcro may also be used to attach the front wall 4 to all the shelves to further reduce the chance of clothes falling out of their shelves.
- the shelving is preferably formed so that the shelves 7 incline downwards toward the back wall 2, keeping the clothes even more safely in place.
- the shelf system 101 is preferably attached to the bottom of the backpack 100 to stabilise the shelves when in use.
- the shelf system may be detachably attached to the bottom so that the backpack can be used without the shelf system.
- the shelf system 101 may also be permanently attached to the bottom of the backpack if that is desired. It is also possible to have a shelf system 101 which is not attached to the bottom of its compartment. In such cases the shelf system will be formed with a cross sectional shape that is complementary with the shape of the compartment wherein the shelf system is provided.
- Hooks 10 are provided at the top plate 3, so that the shelf system can be hung up, either on a door or similar.
- the hooks 10 may be attached directly to the top plate 3, or the may be attached to the top plate 3 by using strings or something similar in order to get some distance from the top plate to the hooks.
- Rubber sleeves 11 may be provided on the hooks 10 which will make sure that the hooks 10 do not leave marks where they are hung.
- the backpack may be divided into two sections where the upper section forms a compartment in which the shelf system 101 is provided.
- the lower section may comprise one or more compartments. This or these compartments may be accessible through separate openings which may be opened and closed by zippers.
