- One of the most dangerous and most feared sail settings is a main sail fully sheeted out when running free. If one is slightest inattentive, a "jibe" may occur. The sail and boom then shift without control from the outer position of one side to the other one with the risk of personal injuries and material damage as a consequence.
- the present invention now solves this, among other things, reliably and efficiently.
- the invention which may be denominated preventer guy since it efficiently protects against uncontrolled pivoting of the boom 70 on a sailboat 501, is based on a polymer mass that has the unique property that the greater speed the mass is subjected to, the stiffer it becomes. Translated into preventer-guy terms, this means that the pivoting speed of the boom can be adjusted by means of the velocity gradient of the polymer mass.
- the guy locks the strap in order to subsequently release and slide along the strap running from rail to rail.
- the guy it is possible to determine by which speed the boom should pivot.
- the guy can also contribute by the fact that it is now possible to sail with pressure in the sail during the entire jibe.
- the handling of the invention is also simple.
- two strops are attached in the rail on each side of the boat.
- the attachment may be permanent or detachable.
- On each strop there is a tongue that then is attached to the strap, etc., of the guy using a quick-coupling of the safety-belt type.
- the guy is attached to the boom in level with the kick, and the strap is adjusted in respect of the desired pivoting angle of the boom.
- an initial setting has to be made in re- spect of the area of the main sail.
- the different positions may be marked on a scale along which the knob actuating the wedges to change the braking function may be turned manually.
- the guy may be adapted to weak, moderate or strong wind, and said positions may suitably be marked with an appurtenant marker for future use.
- the guy may both be mounted and dismounted easily.
