Abstract

Implantable prosthesis with surface made of biocompatible silicone foam, which is integrated into the prosthesis and features foam's characteristics and form.

Description

"IMPLANTABLE PROSTHESIS WITH SILICONE FOAM SURFACE"
This patent refers to prosthesis' surfaces. The proposed invention is applicable to breast, chest, buttock, calf and other prosthesis which can be implanted into humans. There's a wide variety of implants (prosthesis) for human use. The most used biocompatible material is silicone, but it can be replaced by other materials, provided they're also biocompatible. Prosthesis can be filled with other materials, such as silicone, saline solutions and oils, among others.
Today, implantable prosthesis with smooth, rough and polyurethane-coated surfaces are available worldwide.
Some studies demonstrated that polyurethane-coated prosthesis were associated with smaller capsular contraction rates.
On the other hand, other studies concerning these prosthesis affirmed that the coating material peels with the passing of time, thus making the prosthesis' surface smooth and showing the same capsular contraction rate.
Another fact that must be taken into account is the deterioration of the polyurethane foam and consequent formation of 2,4 toluene diamine, a potentially carcinogenic substance which was found in the urine of a patient who had one of these prosthesis implanted (BIRDSELL, CHAN, GRADEEN 1991). The author proposes implantable prosthesis with silicone foam surface because it's a more inert material if compared with polyurethane. Besides, unlike polyurethane surfaces, the silicone surface is not stuck to a smooth surface: it's integrated into the structure of the prosthesis.
The figure in the annexe shows the silicone foam surface. In this case, the foam's characteristic appearance and form, which account for the advantages of this material, are not lost. Besides, as it was previously mentioned, the biocompatible material is integrated into the prosthesis, which is made from the same raw material.
