Definitions
- THIS invention relates to a dental implant assembly and to components of the assembly.
- a dental implant assembly generally consists of an implant component, which is implanted in a patient's jawbone and a prosthetic component, typically in the form of a prosthetic tooth or abutment, which is subsequently anchored to the implant.
- the implant component has an externally threaded shank which is screwed into a preformed hole in the patient's jawbone.
- This component also has an internal socket extending to an outer or coronal surface of the component.
- An outer section of the socket has a central cavity and three angularly spaced, part-circular recesses forming lobes at the outer periphery of the central cavity.
- the prosthetic component has a corresponding, multi-lobed profile which locates in the socket when the prosthetic component is anchored to the implant component.
- the cooperating, non-circular, multi- lobed profiles prevent rotation of the prosthetic component relative to the implant component.
- the present invention seeks to provide another solution to the problem of implant splitting.
- a dental implant assembly comprising an implant component having an outer end with a lobed socket therein and a prosthetic component which is in use anchored on the outer end of the implant component with a portion thereof in the socket, wherein the components are shaped for the prosthetic component to apply an inward clamping action to the periphery of the outer end of the implant component when anchored thereon.
- the prosthetic component advantageously serves to resist outward deformation of the outer end of the implant component.
- the periphery of the outer end of the implant component is formed with a sloping surface, typically a conical surface
- the prosthetic component has a complementary, peripheral sloping surface, once again typically a conical surface, arranged to bear thereon.
- the conical surfaces may slope at an angle of about 45° to the common axis of the components.
- the sloping surface of the outer end of the implant component may be provided at an end of a cylindrical adaptor ring dimensioned to fit complementally about an implant component of smaller diameter.
- Another aspect of the invention concerns the implant component of a dental implant assembly, the implant component having an operatively outer end of circular cross-section, an axial, lobed socket in the outer end and a peripheral, annular sloping surface shaped and arranged to mate with a corresponding sloping surface of a prosthetic component when the prosthetic component is anchored to the implant component with a portion of the prosthetic component in the socket, such that the prosthetic component applies an inward clamping action to the periphery of the outer end of the implant component when anchored thereto.
- the implant component may comprise an implantable inner component and an annular adaptor dimensioned to fit complementally about an outer end of the inner component, the sloping surface of the implant component being provided at the periphery of the adaptor.
- Yet another aspect of the invention provides a prosthetic component of a dental implant assembly, the prosthetic component being anchorable on an outer end of an implant component of the assembly and having an axially inwardly facing base surface shaped and arranged to bear on the outer end of the implant component, the base surface including a peripheral sloping surface arranged to bear on and apply an inward clamping action to a corresponding, peripheral, sloping surface at the outer end of the implant component.
- a dental implant adaptor comprising a cylindrical ring dimensioned to fit complementally about an outer end of an implant component of smaller diameter, the ring being formed at one end thereof with a sloping peripheral surface shaped and arranged to mate complementally with a corresponding, sloping surface of a prosthetic component when the prosthetic component is anchored to the implant component, whereby cooperation between the ring and the prosthetic component, and the ring itself, serve to resist outward deformation of the outer end of the implant component.
- a formation typically a rib or flange arranged to bear on the outer end of the implant component, may be provided to prevent axial movement of the ring on the implant component.
- Figure 1 shows an exploded cross-sectional view, at the position of the line 1-1 in Figure 2, of a dental implant assembly according to the invention
- Figure 2 shows an end view of the implant component of the assembly seen in Figure 1 ;
- Figure 3 shows a partial cross-sectional view of the implant assembly after the prosthetic component has been anchored to the implant component
- Figure 4 shows a partial cross-sectional view, of a modified implant assembly and illustrates how an implant component of larger diameter, according to the invention, can accommodate a prosthetic component of smaller diameter;
- Figure 5 shows a partial cross-sectional side view of a modified dental implant component according to the invention.
- the dental implant assembly 10 seen in Figure 1 includes an implant component 12, a prosthetic component 14 and a screw 16 which is used to anchor the prosthetic component on the implant component as described below in more detail.
- the implant component 12 has an externally threaded shank 18 and an outer or coronal end 20 formed with a socket 22 extending axially from its outer or coronal extremity.
- the socket 22 has an outer part 24 of multi- lobed shape and a round cylindrical part 26 situated below the outer part and leading to an axial, internally threaded passage 28 extending into the shank 12.
- the socket part 24 consists of an inner, round cylindrical portion 24.1 and three equiangularly spaced, semi-circular lobes 24.2 radiating from the inner portion.
- the shank 18 is screwed into a preformed hole drilled or reamed in the jawbone, i.e. the maxilla or mandible, of an implant recipient.
- the outer end 20 of the implant component 12 has a flat surface 29 bounded by a peripheral, circumferentially continuous, sloping surface 30, in this case a bevelled, conical surface making an angle 32 of 45° to a transverse plane normal to the axis 34 of the component, i.e. an angle of 45° to the axis 34 itself.
- the prosthetic component 14 is, in this case, a prosthetic tooth structure, but those skilled in the art will understand that in other cases the component could be a post or abutment for supporting a prosthetic tooth structure.
- the component 14 has an axial passage extending through it for the screw 16 and includes a projection 40 of multi-lobed shape complemental to the socket part 24.
- the component 14 locates on the coronal surface of the outer end 20 of the implant component 12.
- This component has a flat surface 41 bounded by a peripheral, circumferentially continuous, sloping surface 42, in this case a conical, bevelled surface, which is complemental to and locates on the peripheral surface 30 of the implant component.
- the implant component has a relatively small thickness 44 of material located beyond the radial extremities of the lobes 24.2, particularly in the case of implant components with a small overall diameter 46 which may, for instance, be 3.5mm. In a conventional arrangement, this gives rise to a tendency for outward deformation or splitting of the material of the implant component either during installation or subsequently as a result of fatigue after prolonged usage.
- the interaction of the surfaces 30 and 42 effectively enables the prosthetic component 14 to provide a radial restraint to the periphery of the implant component in order to counter the tendency to deform outwardly or split.
- the surface 42 of the prosthetic component effectively surrounds the surface 30, with the prosthetic component providing a radial clamping action to the periphery of the implant component when the prosthetic component is firmly anchored to the implant component by the screw 16.
- Figure 4 shows an assembly in which the diameter of the implant component has been increased to provide a further counter to outward deformation or splitting.
- the overall diameter of the implant component may for instance be increased from the conventional value of 3.5mm to a value of 3.8mm.
- the diametral increase will, on its own, provide a counter to any tendency of the outer end of the implant component to deform or split open.
- the combination of the thicker material and the cooperation of the sloping surfaces 30 and 42 will provide a very effective counter to outward deformation or splitting of the implant component.
- the flat coronal surface 29 has been maintained at a diameter of 3.5mm, enabling the implant component to accommodate a standard prosthetic component of 3.5mm diameter.
- the implant component enjoys the benefit of greater material thickness but there is no cooperation between sloping surfaces on the components to provide the further benefit mentioned above.
- the advantage is that an implant component according to the invention can still be used with a conventional prosthetic component should this be necessary for any reason.
- Figure 5 shows how a bevelled, sloping surface can be provided on a conventional implant component of, say, 3.5mm diameter.
- a cylindrical adaptor ring 50 having an internal diameter matching the external diameter of the implant component is placed around the implant component.
- the coronal end of the ring is formed peripherally with a bevelled, sloping surface 52 corresponding in function to the sloping surface 30 of the embodiment of Figures 1 to 3.
- the coronal end has an inwardly projecting rib or flange 54 which locates on the coronal end surface 48 of the existing implant component.
- the illustrated arrangement is used in conjunction with a prosthetic component having a complemental sloping surface, corresponding to the surface 42, which bears on the surface 52 to provide a lateral restraint against outward deformation or splitting of the implant component.
- the adaptor ring itself also acts as a reinforcement providing lateral restraint against such failure of the implant component.
- the rib or flange 54 prevents the ring 50 from moving axially when the prosthetic component is clamped onto the implant component by the screw 16.
- Figure 5 arrangement is particularly suitable for retrofitting to an existing implant component in situations where it is envisaged that failure by outward deformation or splitting may take place.
- the bevelled surfaces 30, 42 and 52 may, for instance, have a radial extent of the order of 0.15mm.
