Abstract

Described is a modified ovalbumin promoter for use in the tissue specific expression of heterologous proteins in a transgenic avian. The modular ovalbumin promoter provides for expression of the heterologous protein product into the egg from where the protein can be purified. The regulatory elements of the ovalbumin promoter can be condensed to a size compatible with a replication defective retroviral vector, in particular a viral vector based upon a lentivirus, this permitting the retention of physiologically relevant regulated expression of heterologous gene expression from such a promoter in vivo.
