Abstract

We provide a method comprising modulating the activity of mTOR in a stem cell, preferably increasing the activity of mTOR to enable a stem cell to self-renew, or decreasing it to enable a stem cell to differentiate. The stem cell may be exposed to an agonist of mTOR for the former, preferably phosphatidic acid, or an antagonist of mTOR for the latter, preferably 1-butanol or rapamycin or a derivative thereof.
