Definitions
- the present invention relates to a protective clothing or lining for motorcyclists comprising a loop knitted fabric of abrasion resistant fibres.
- Such a fabric is known from US-A-5,887,453 and provides high abrasion resistance when combined with a second fabric of high tensile strength as well as good comfort to the wearer.
- the known loop knitted fabric consists of fibres of KEVLAR ® or the like. Such fibres are not preferable from an economical or environmental point of view and it would be desirable to replace the known fabric with a more economical material layer, which also should be more suitable from an environmental point of view.
- the objective of the present invention is to provide a loop knitted fabric with high abrasion resistance for a protective clothing or lining for motorcyclists, which is more preferable from an economical and environmental point of view than the known fabrics.
- a protective clothing or lining for motorcyclists comprising a loop knitted fabric of abrasion resistant fibres, characterised in that said fabric is made of polyester.
- said fabric has a surface weight of 650-850 g/m 2 .
- the invention also relates to the use of a fabric consisting of a loop knitted fabric of abrasion resistant fibres made of polyester as an outer protective layer in a protective garment for a motorcyclist, the fabric preferably having a surface weight exceeding 650-850 g/m 2 .
- the invention also relates to the use of a fabric consisting of a loop knitted fabric of abrasion resistant fibres made of polyester as a lining in gloves or boots for a motorcyclist.
- FIG. 1 schematically disclosing the layers in a protective garment for motorcyclist, said garment comprising a layer according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
- Said clothing comprises a Terry Loop knitted fabric 1.
- the fabric 1 is made of polyester fibres.
- Fabric 1 is secured to a second warp knitted fabric 2, preferably by sewing, which also is made of polyester fibres.
- the loops of the fabric 1 are turned to the outside of the clothing and the warp knitted fabric 2 is placed on the inside of fabric 1, i.e. on the base side thereof.
- a fabric 3 of HT (High- Tenacity) polyester rachel-knit, a so-called "archery net”, is disposed on the inside of the warp knit fabric 2 and secured thereto, preferably by sewing.
- a mesh lining fabric 4 is disposed on the inside of the protective clothing and secured to the HT (High- Tenacity) polyester rachel-knit fabric 3.
- the fabric 4 is also made of polyester
- an outer fabric 5 is attached to the outside of the protective clothing 1- 4.
- This fabric 5 can be a fabric with high air permeability or a waterproof fabric depending on the circumstances. It can also be removably attached to the protective clothing or unattached thereto.
- This outer fabric does not significantly influence the abrasion resistance or impact resistance of the garment but serves mainly to give the garment a proper look.
- leather is used as outer fabric, which of course will increase the abrasion and impact resistance of such a garment.
- VeI cro® elements or the like for attachment of protective pads or the like are affixed to the protective clothing 1-4.
- a fabric of polyester can be used instead of a fabric of KEVLAR® fibres without overly large loss of abrasion resistance providing the surface weight of the fabric being 650-850 g/m 2 .
- Tests have shown that based on the Cambridge standard abrasion test for level 3, a Terry knit polyester fabric with a surface weight of 650-850 g/m 2 reach the same level as KEVLAR® fibre.
- a clothing 1-4 having a fabric of polyester with a surface weight of 750 g/m 2 has also been tested according to European Standard EN 13595 for protective clothing for professional motorcycle riders. This clothing 1-4 was found to have an abrasion resistance of more than 10.5 seconds which by far exceeds the minimum requirement of 7 seconds for level 2 in zones 1 and 2.
- zones 3 and 4 of a motorcycle clothing the risk of impact and abrasion hazards is less than in zones 1 and 2 of the garment and accordingly the abrasion resistance of the garment can be lower in these zones.
- a polyester fabric 1 with a surface weight of 320 g/m 2 was tested and found to have an abrasion resistance according to EN 13595 of 3.5 seconds which with a margin exceed the minimum requirement in the Standard for zones 3 and 4.
- a Terry Loop knitted fabric 1 used as a protective clothing for motorcyclists according to the present invention has a surface weight exceeding 300 g/m 2 .
- a fabric according to the present invention is applied as a layer in a protective clothing for a motorcyclist.
- a fabric can also be used as a lining in cloves and boots for motorcyclists.
- the scope of the invention shall therefore only be determined by the content of the enclosed patent claims.
