Abstract

Stable gel formulations of oxazolidinone antibiotic drugs, such as linezolid, are provided which are suitable for topical administration. Gel formulations of the present invention comprise an oxazolidinone antibiotic drug solubilized in a polyol solvent system including a polyol solvent, a thickening agent, and water. The oxazolidinone drug remains solubilized in gel formulations of the present formulation for at least 3 hours at a temperature from 15°C to 30°C. Also provided are methods of topically administering gel formulations of the present invention to treat or prevent infection by gram-positive bacteria.
