  • suitable absorbent materials for use in the absorbent core include creped cellulose wadding; meltblown polymers including coform; chemically stiffened, modified or cross-linked cellulosic fibers; synthetic fibers such as crimped polyester fibers; peat moss; tissue including tissue wraps and tissue laminates; absorbent foams; absorbent sponges; superabsorbent polymers; absorbent gelling materials; or any equivalent material or combinations of materials, or mixtures of these.
  • absorbent gelling materials and “superabsorbent polymers” are those materials that, upon contact with aqueous fluids, such as bodily fluids, imbibes such fluids and form hydrogels. These absorbent gelling materials are typically capable of absorbing large quantities of aqueous bodily fluids, and further capable of retaining such absorbed fluids under moderate pressures. These absorbent gelling materials are typically in the form of discrete, nonfibrous particles. Other forms, such as fibers, foams, sheets, strips, or other macrostructures, are also suitable for use herein. Suitable absorbent gelling materials in the form of open cell foams may include those disclosed in U.S. Pat. Nos.
  • the configuration and construction of the absorbent core may also be varied (e.g., the absorbent core may have varying caliper zones and/or have a profile so as to be thicker in the center; hydrophilic gradients; superabsorbent gradients; or lower average density and lower average basis weight zones, e.g., acquisition zones; or may comprise one or more layers or structures).
  • the total absorbent capacity of the absorbent core should, however, be compatible with the design loading and the intended use of the absorbent article.
  • the size and absorbent capacity of the absorbent core may be varied to accommodate different uses such as diapers, incontinence pads, pantiliners, regular sanitary napkins, and overnight sanitary napkins, and to accommodate wearers ranging from infants to adults.
  • the absorbent core can include other absorbent components that are often used in absorbent articles, for example, a dusting layer, a wicking or acquisition layer, or a secondary topsheet for increasing the wearer's comfort.

  • Suitable materials for use as the sublayer may include large cell open foams, macro- porous compression resistant nonwoven highlofts, large size particulate forms of open and closed cell foams (macro and/or microporous), highloft nonwovens, polyolefin, polystyrene, polyurethane foams or particles, structures comprising a multiplicity of vertically oriented looped strands of fibers, absorbent core structures described above having punched holes or depressions, and the like.
  • microporous refers to materials which are capable of transporting fluids by capillary action.
  • a sublayer includes a mechanical fastening loop landing element, having an uncompressed thickness of about 1.5 millimeters available as XPL-7124 from the 3M Corporation of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  • Another embodiment includes a 6 denier, crimped and resin-bonded nonwoven highloft having a basis weight of 110 grams per square meter and an uncompressed thickness of 7.9 millimeters which is available from the Glit Company of Wrens, Georgia.
  • Other suitable absorbent and nonabsorbent sublayers are described in U.S. Patent Nos.
  • the disposable absorbent articles of the present invention further comprise a wetness indicator disposed between the absorbent core and the backsheet and in liquid communication with the absorbent core.
  • the wetness indicator comprises a central graphic and a background graphic wherein the background graphic comprises at least one responsive color composition that, upon wetting, exhibits a visible change that is selected from the group consisting of a color change, a graphic change, and combinations thereof.
  • the central graphic is hidden by the background graphic until such time as the graphic is wetted.
  • FIGURE 1 illustrates a background graphic of a colored bear that once wetted reveals a central graphic of a different colored bear.
  • FIGURE 2 depicts a central graphic of colored raindrops that are revealed upon wetting of a colored larger animated bubbles background graphic.
  • the background graphic may be a different color than the central graphic that is revealed upon wetting as is shown in FIGURE 3.
  • FIGURE 4 similarly illustrates that the background graphic may be wetted to reveal a central graphic that is of an entirely or of a partially different color from the background graphic.
  • each of the larger and smaller bubbles in FIGURE 4 prior to wetting may be blue in color but after wetting only the smaller sized bubbles may change to pink in color while the raindrops within the larger bubbles may appear pink in color while the surrounding larger bubble remains blue in color after wetting.
  • each of the bubbles may be blue in color and upon wetting the raindrops that are revealed may each be a different color from the original blue bubbles and may still be different colors from one another.
  • FIGURES 5 and 6 illustrate how the background graphic may be an entirely different shape and/or color from the central graphic that appears upon wetting of the graphic.
  • a responsive color composition may comprise from about 1% to about 10%, by weight of the composition, of a pigment.
  • the composition comprises from about 2% to about 8% and most preferably from about 3% to about 7% of the pigment.
  • the solid pigments particles used in the present invention include, but not limited to examples, pigment Yellow (C.I. 14), pigment Red (C.I. 48:3), pigment Blue (C.I. 15:4), pigment Black (C.I. 7), and combinations thereof.
  • the responsive color composition also comprises from about 1% to about 10%, by weight of the composition, of a fluid dyestuff. More preferably, the composition comprises from about 2% to about 8% and most preferably from about 3% to about 7% of the fluid dyestuff.
  • Suitable fluid dyestuffs include water soluble ink colorants like direct dyes, acid dyes, base dyes, and various solvent soluble dyes.   • the responsive color composition comprises from about 10% to about 99% of a solvent.
  • the composition comprises from about 30% to about 85% and even more preferably from about 40% to about 75% of a solvent.
  • the solvents of the present invention may be selected from the group consisting of water, non-aqueous solvents, and combinations thereof.
  • Preferred non-aqueous solvents may comprise alcohols, acetates, and combinations thereof.
  • the alcohol solvents are preferably selected from the group consisting of iso-propyl alcohol, n-propyl alcohol, ethanol, methanol, and combinations thereof.
  • suitable acetate solvents include, but are not limited to, isopropyl acetate, n- propyl acetate, and combinations thereof.
  • An exemplary ink that can be used to dispose both the central and background graphics on a substrate is commercially available from Osaka Printing Industries as Omutsu-you-G ICC pants-you Hkonku v/M (translated from Japanese to English).
  • the responsive color composition comprises from about 1% to about 10%, by weight of the composition, of a fluid dyestuff and from about 10% to about 99%, by weight of the composition, of a solvent.
  • a pigment in the responsive color composition such a composition shall be disposed adjacent to a varnish coating, which is detailed herein.
  • the responsive color composition comprises from about 2% to about 8% of a fluid dyestuff, even more preferably from about 2.5% to about 7%, and most preferably from about 3% to about 6%.
  • it is more preferred that such a composition comprise from about 30% to about 80%) of a solvent and even more preferred that it comprise 40% to about 75%.
  • the central graphic may additionally comprise additional responsive color compositions that includes the same or similar constituents as the first responsive color composition.
  • the articles of the present invention may further comprise a permanent color composition, particular in the wetness indicator.
  • This permanent color composition comprises from about 1%> to about 10%>, by weight of the composition, of a pigment. Suitable pigments include those that are discussed relative to the responsive color composition.
  • the permanent color composition additionally comprises a non-aqueous solvent in an amount of from about 10% to about 99%, preferably from about 30%> to about 80%, and most preferably from about 40% to about 75%. Again, those solvents that are suitable herein are similar to those discussed for the responsive color composition.
  • the responsive color composition of the present invention may be disposed adjacent to a varnish coating. Without being limited by theory, this coating serves as a sealant of sorts for the responsive color composition. Upon contact with an aqueous liquid, the responsive color composition (or ink) of the background graphic dissolves and the central graphic disposed adjacent to the varnish coating is not affected by the liquid. The central graphic then becomes apparent upon dissolution of the background graphic and maintenance of the varnish coating.
  • Suitable materials for the varnish coating may be selected from the group consisting of acrylic copolymers, shellac-based acrylic resins, polyamides, and combinations thereof. These materials are intended to be exemplary but not limiting in any way. Additionally, the varnish coating may be disposed over the graphic, beneath the graphic, or both.
  • the varnish coating be disposed adjacent to the graphic such that one or more edges of the coating extend at least about 25% past one or more edges of the graphic. More preferably, the varnish coating extends at least about 15% and most preferably at least about 10% past one or more edges of the graphic.
  • central graphic is used herein to refer to a graphic that becomes visible when the absorbent article is insulted with urine or like fluid. The change in visibility of a graphic or a portion of a graphic can be determined based on a person's observation of the graphic before and after the graphic is exposed to liquid. Backsheet graphics are directly visible on the exterior surface of the absorbent article and have been extremely appealing to children.
  • the background and central graphics are suitably disposed on the backsheet.
  • the term "disposed" and variations thereof are intended to mean that one element can be integral with another element, or that one element can be a separate structure bonded to or placed with or placed near another element.
  • the graphics can be formed or applied directly or indirectly to a surface of the backsheet, formed or applied between layers of a multiple layer backsheet, formed or applied to a substrate that is placed with or near the outer cover, formed or applied within a layer of the backsheet or another substrate, or other variations or combinations thereof.
  • the graphics can be printed (via flexography, gravure, digital printing, etc.), sprayed, or otherwise applied directly on a layer of the outer cover.
  • the graphics can be applied to a layer placed with or near the backsheet, such as a substrate associated with the absorbent assembly, including but not limited to tissue layers, liquid handling layers, absorbent layers, and the like.
  • the graphics can be printed (via flexography, gravure, digital printing, etc.). For such printing, it is envisioned that a multiplicity of additional responsive color compositions may be utilized such that multicolor graphics are achieved upon wetting of the article.
  • preferred speeds for printing range from about 50 m/min to about 500 m/min, preferably from about 100 m/min to about 300 m min. In preferred embodiments, the printing speed is set at about 200 m/min.
  • a multicolor print press is utilized to print the graphic on the backsheet material with the responsive color composition(s) and optional varnish coatings being printed in succession from different print stations.
  • the graphics for use with the present invention can be located on or against either surface of the backsheet provided the graphic(s) remain visible from the exterior of the product before wetting.
  • the central and background graphics can be formed on or applied to the backsheet or another substrate bonded to or placed with or placed near the backsheet by any suitable technique.
  • the background and central graphics are printed on the interior surface of the backsheet.
  • the background graphic can be in liquid communication with the absorbent assembly of the product.
  • liquid communication means that liquid such as urine is able to travel from one layer or element to another layer or element.
  • the absorbent assembly can but need not include a slot or densii ⁇ ed region, incorporate a liquid distribution layer, or the like, to channel or direct liquid to the location near the outer cover where the graphics are located.
  • Absorbent articles suitable for use as the present invention include diapers, training pants, incontinence products, diaper pants, disposable underwear, or the like. Suitable training pants and diaper pants can have seamed side portions or refastenable side portions.
  • the present invention is particularly suited for use with training pants or diaper pants to aid in toilet training.
  • Particular diapers and training pants suitable for use with the present invention are disclosed in U.S. Patent Nos. 3860003, 4636207, 4695278, 4704115, 4795454, 4900317, 4909803 (Reissued as USRE34920), 5085654, 5492751, 6476288, 6627787, 5507760, 5609587, 5635191, 5643588, 6118041, SIR H1630, 5246433, 5769838, 5899895, 5899896, and 6120487.   • the absorbent article further comprises at least a first cuff for providing improved containment of liquids and other body exudates; an elastic waist feature that provides improved fit and containment; and a fastening system which forms a side closure which maintains the first waist region and the second waist region in an overlapping configuration such that lateral tensions are maintained around the circumference of the absorbent article to maintain the absorbent article on the wearer.
  • the absorbent article may also comprise elasticized side panels (not shown) in the waist regions and to provide an elastically extensible feature that provides a more comfortable and contouring fit and more effective application of the absorbent article.
  • the "elasticized" leg cuffs can be constructed in a number of different configurations, including those described in US Pat. Nos.
  • the absorbent article may include one ore more first cuffs that provide improved containment of liquids and other body exudates.
  • First cuffs may also be referred to as outer leg cuff, leg bands, side flaps, leg cuffs or elastic cuffs.
  • U.S. Pat. No. 3860003 describes a disposable diaper which provides a contractible leg opening having a side flap and one or more elastic members to provide an elasticized leg cuff.
  • an absorbent article of the present invention may include one or more second cuffs that also provide improved containment of liquids and other body exudates.
