Definitions
- the present invention relates to a food comminuting apparatus, and more particularly to a food comminuting apparatus that includes a frame that allows for the apparatus to be supported over a work area.
- Apparatuses to be used for comminuting food items are known, and include, for example, graters, zesters, shavers and peelers.
- these apparatuses comprise at least one comminuting surface such as a plate or blade having one or more openings that bear a sharpened blade or edges, the openings being configured in a selected pattern for the given type of apparatus.
- the particular apparatus includes a handle to enable the user to securely hold the apparatus in place while moving the food item over the plate or blade, or while moving the comminuting surface of the apparatus over the food item.
- Graters in particular, are commonly provided in a configuration wherein a user is required to hold the grater in an inclined position over a work area, such as a cutting board or a countertop, while moving the food item over the comminuting surface of the apparatus.
- graters can be provided in a "tower" configuration wherein the apparatus comprises at least two near vertically inclined plates, at least one of which has a food comminuting surface, and wherein the . plates are joined together in a fashion to provide an area below the plates, or enclosed between the plates, for an accumulation of comminuted food particles.
- graters can be provided having a handle that allows the user to hold the grater above a work area such as a cutting board, a countertop, a sink, a bowel, a pan or a baking dish while the food item is moved across the comminuting surface of the apparatus.
- a work area such as a cutting board, a countertop, a sink, a bowel, a pan or a baking dish
- the need for the user to engage in the extra step of the transferring the food particles to a further work area results in a greater amount of time being incurred for the preparation of a desired food item. If the grater is of the type to be held over the work area during the food comminuting process, there is the distinct possibility that some of the comminuted food particles may not fall into the desired work area as the user may not be able to hold the grater steady while grating the food item.
- the present invention provides a food comminuting apparatus comprising a plate having a comminuting surface and a telescopically extensible frame for supporting the plate over various sized work areas.
- Figure 1 is an isometric view of an embodiment of the food comminuting apparatus of the present invention
- Figures 2A and 2B are a top plan views of the food comminuting apparatus of Figure 1 showing an extension member in an extended position and an unextended position, respectively;
- Figure 3 is an illustration of a portion of a telescopically extensible frame of the food comminuting apparatus shown in Figure 1;
- Figure 4 is a cross sectional view along the section line A- A' of the food comminuting apparatus shown in Figure 2B;
- Figure 5 is a view of the food comminuting apparatus of Figure 1, shown in place over a bowel;
- Figure 6 is a view of the apparatus shown in Figure 1, shown in an alternative position over a work area.
- the present invention provides a food comminuting apparatus 10 comprising a plate 12 having a comminuting surface 14, and a telescopically extensible frame 16 for supporting the plate 12 over various sized work areas, hi the present embodiment of the invention, the plate 12 is secured to the telescopically extensible frame 16 by spot- welding each dependent side 18 and 20 of the plate 12 to a sleeve 22 and 24 provided on opposite sides of the telescopically extensible frame 16. Other manners of securing the plate 12 to the telescopically extensible frame 16 will be employed as may be apparent to a person of ordinary skill in the art.
- the plate 12 could be secured to the telescopically extensible frame 16 in a temporary fashion to allow removal of the plate 12 from the frame 16 for separate cleaning after use of the food comminuting apparatus 10.
- Such temporary securing of the plate 12 to the frame 16 could be accomplished by providing on each sleeve 22 and 24 a groove or slots adapted to securely accommodate a tongue or hooks provided on each depending side 18 and 20 of the plate 12, or by having the depending sides 18 and 20 tensionally biased on the sleeves 22 and 24.
- a plurality of apertures 26 each aperture 26 bearing at least one sharpened blade 28 that projects slightly upwardly from the aperture 26 and which cuts into a food item as the food item is moved across the comminuting surface 14.
- the apertures 26 are provided in two distinct sizes, although it will be apparent to a person of ordinary skill in the art that the comminuting surface 14 can be provided with apertures 26 of only a single size or greater than two sizes. As well, a single aperture 26 and blade 28 may be selected.
- the food comminuting apparatus 10 of the present invention is provided with an extension member 30 that telescopically extends the frame 16.
- the extension member 30 can be extended so as to increase the overall length of the frame 16 to about 150% when compared to the length of the frame 16 when the extension member 30 is in a fully retracted position.
- the extension member 30 is curvilinearly configured from a single piece of material and, as can be seen in Figure 3, has a proximal end 32 and distal end 34 that reside and are moveable within the frame 16.
- Movement of the proximal end 32 and distal end 34 of the extension member 30 within the frame occurs contemporaneously with the telescopic extension of the frame, and the ends are moveable from and to a position correlating to the full retraction of the extension member 30. While this specific embodiment of the invention provides for a single extension member, it will be obvious to a person of skill in the art that the food comminuting apparatus 10 of the present invention could be provided with an extension member at both ends of the apparatus, or have separate extension members that may be individually extended from an end of the apparatus.
- a curvilinearly configured handle 36 is provided at the end of the telescopically extensible frame 16 opposite to the extension member 30.
- the handle 36 has a proximal end 38 and distal end 40 that reside at a fixed position within the telescopically extensible frame 16.
- Different configurations of the handle 36 will be apparent to a person of ordinary skill in the art, and may comprise, for example, an arm or arms that projects from the plate 12 or the frame 16 in a direction opposite to that of the extension member 30.
- the proximal end 32 and the dismal end 34 of the fully retracted extension member 30, and the proximal end 38 and the distal end 40 of the handle 36 are provided with means to releasably engage upon each other.
- the ends of the extension member are provided with a female portion 42 of a coupler 44 while the ends of the handle 36 are provided with a male portion clasp 50 provided on the female portion 42 so as to connect the handle 36 to the extension member 30 when the extension member 30 is fully retracted.
- Disengagement between an end of the extension member 30 and an end of the handle 36 occurs upon a user .applying a slight tugging action on the extension member 36 so that the projection 48 is released from the clasp 50.
- extension of the frame 16 can still be accomplished by the user holding onto the extension member 36 and, while allowing the apparatus to swing freely, applying a moderate yet abrupt downward jerking action so as to cause the projection 48 on the male portion 46 to release from the clasp 50 provided on the female portion 42.
- Retraction of the extension member 30 is accomplished quite easily by the user lightly pushing against the extended extension member 30 with their free hand.
- the user can also easily retract the extension member by abutting the extended extension member 30 against a solid surface and lightly pushing the apparatus 10 in the direction of the solid surface while holding onto the handle 36.
- a further advantage is that extension and retraction of the extension member 30 can be easily accomplished even while the apparatus, a user's hands or both are wet or soiled, for example, with food ingredients.
- the portion of the extension member 30 that telescopically extends within and without the sleeves 22, 24 of the frame 16 is dimensioned with a cross-sectional diameter 52 or otherwise configured with the frame 16 to reduce the possibility of an object, such as a food particle or a piece of debris or other contaminates, from entering into the frame 16 and thereafter encumbering the movement of the extension member 30 or the engagement between the ends of the extension member 30 and the handle 36.
- Handle 36 though stationary in the present embodiment, may be similarly configured with frame 16 to have a relative cross-sectional diameter 54 that together with the configuration of the frame 16, minimizes entry of contaminates into the frame.
- each sleeve 22 and 24 is provided with a fixed insert 56 having a hollow bore of sufficient diameter to allow the extension member 36, but not the female portion 42 of the coupler 44, to freely move through the insert 56.
- the inserts 56 thus prevent the user from pulling the extension member 30 completely out of the frame 16.
- Each insert 56 has a flanged end 58 that further aids in reducing the possibility of an object, such as a food particle or a piece of debris, from entering into the frame 16 and thereafter encumbering the movement of the extension member 30 or the engagement between the ends of the extension member 30 and the handle 36.
- each male portion 46 has a flanged end 60 that tightly seals against the handle 36 and the sleeve 22 and 24, thereby securing the handle 36 into the frame and reducing the possibility of an object, such as food particles or a piece of debris, from entering the frame.
- means other than the inserts 56 may be provided to prevent the user from pulling the extension member 30 completely out of the frame 16, such as by providing a slight protrusion on the inner surface 62 of at least one of the sleeves 22 and 24.
- the handle 36 may be secured in the frame 16 by means other than the male portion 46, such as by crimping or welding the sleeves 22 and 24 to the handle 36.
- the apparatus may be used to grate food items over work areas comprising a variety of shapes and sizes.
- the food comminuting apparatus 10 is shown in place over a rim 64 of the bowel 66 into which a plurality of food items 68 are being directly grated.
- the frame 16 is telescopically extended over the bowel 66 by the user pulling the extension member 30 out from the frame 16 a distance to allow for the apparatus 10 to be placed on the rim 64 of the bowel 66.
- the user then retracts the extension member 30 back into the frame 16 until a cushioning element 70 provided on the extension member 30 contacts the bowel.
- the user then proceeds to grate the desired food item 68 into the bowel 66 while holding the gripping element 72 provided on the handle 36.
- the food comminuting apparatus 10 can also be converted for use in an inclined grating position as shown in Figure 6.
- Cushioning element 70 may be placed on the surface of a work area with the apparatus 10 in an inclined position.
- Cushioning element 70 may provide a non-slip function when the food comminuting apparatus 10 is in the inclined position.
- Gripping element 72 on the handle 30 may be held and food grated across the comminuting surface 14 of the plate 12, generally in a downward direction.
- extension member 30 and the handle 36 are configured, in the present embodiment of the invention in a curvilinear manner, so as to allow for the apparatus 10 to be supported over the surface of a work area, such as a countertop or a cutting board, such that a spaced relation is maintained between the plate 12 and the work area surface, thereby enabling food particles to accumulate below the apparatus.
- a work area such as a countertop or a cutting board
- handle 36 comprises stop 74, which as shown in Figure 6 assists in securing the apparatus 10 when supported over a work area.
- Stop 74 may be configured as a curve within handle 36, but it will be apparent to a person of ordinary skill in the art that other means or configurations may be used.
- the food comminuting apparatus 10 may be conveniently stored, for example, in a drawer, or more advantageously by the user hanging the apparatus 10 from a peg, a hook or a utensil holder provided in a desired location. Convenient storage of the apparatus 10 is facilitated by the releasable engagement that occurs between an end of the extension member 30 and an end of the handle 36, thereby allowing for the apparatus 10 to be maintained in a more compact format when not in use.
