Abstract

A method of 'slab off grade' building construction (10) comprises digging a peripheral trench in expansive soil (14) to a depth unaffected by moisture-caused soil expansion, forming a cementitous foundation wall (12) in the trench, supporting a preferably steel and concrete slab (16) on the foundation wall (12) and erecting the building (18) on the slab (16). The foundation so-constructed and a building (18) supported on the slab (16) are free of the difficulties caused by soil expansion in slab-on-grade construction (10) in regions troubled by expansive soil (14). Preferably the cementitous foundation wall (12) is soilcrete. Apparatus for digging the trench, excavating the soil (14), mixing soil (14), water and cement is also disclosed.
