Abstract

A tundish inner nozzle/top plate assembly (1) is described that reduces alumina clogging while permitting easy removal of the assembly after a casting sequence. The assembly comprises a nozzle portion (2) and a plate portion (3), and is adapted for use in a slide gate mechanism. An interface of the nozzle (2) and plate portions (3) includes an interlock that firmly joins the portions during transportation, installation, and use. After exposure to casting temperature and opening of the slide gate mechanism, the two portions separate easily, thereby allowing removal of the used assembly and installation of a new assembly. In one embodiment, the assembly defines a pouring channel without any joint that could allow ingress of air.
