Abstract

The present invention concerns a nasal insertable device for facilitating breathing through the nose, said device having a substantially tubular configuration with a first and second end and with a slit opening extending between said first and second ends allowing the device to deflect during insertion in a nostril and expand the nostril when the device is inserted; and said device having a smooth inner surface and a rough outer surface and provided with a protruding retention member. By a device according to the invention, the inside of a nostril is slightly expanded and the nose side walls are reinforced so that contractions during inhalation of air are prevented and breathing may be done without obstructions. This results in numerous advantages for the user as sufficient oxygen may be inhaled, so that the oxygen level of the blood is increased so that more oxygen may be provided for the brain, heart and lungs.

Description

NASAL INSERTABLE DEVICE FOR FACILITATING BREATHING THROUGH THE NOSE
The present invention relates to a nasal insertable device for facilitating breathing through the nose.
The most narrow air passage during normal breathing is through the upper airways, in particular through the nostrils of the nose. The inhalation of air through the nostrils results in a further narrowing of the nostrils because the sides of the nose are sucked inwards, which may constrict the breathing and thus the air intake. This reduction of the size of the airflow passage may result in difficulties in breathing for some persons. Such breathing difficulties may be experienced, e.g. by elderly people, by physical performance or during sleeping.
In order to counteract this phenomenon, an adhesive nose patch may be used. This bridges the nostrils on the outside of the nose, and thereby prevents the nose side walls from contracting. This allows for an enhanced air intake and is frequently used by e.g. athletes for enhancing their physical performance.
However, this way of enhancing the air intake or reduce any difficulties in breathing, e.g. for elderly people, cannot always be used, e.g. during sleeping, etc. as the patch may fall off.
Therefore, it is an object by the present invention to provide an improved and more reliable device for facilitating breathing through the nose.
This object is achieved by a nasal insertable device for facilitating breathing through the nose, wherein said device has a substantially tubular configuration with a first and second end and with a slit opening extending between said first and second ends allowing the device to deflect during insertion in a nostril and expand the nostril when the device is inserted; and said device has a smooth inner surface and an outer undulated surface and provided with a protruding retention member. By using a device according to the invention, a user may experience a reduction in snoring during sleep, restless sleep and insomnia. Test show that an improvement can be felt immediately where the snoring disappears or is significantly reduced. It is also found that the device according to the invention helps when gasping for breath, which is especially beneficial for elderly people. Moreover, the device may have a good impact on stress symptoms as deeper breathing can be done through the nose.
The device according to the invention can be used in one or both nostrils can hardly be felt when inserted properly.
Preferably, the device is made in a resilient material, preferably a biologically inert polymeric material. Hereby, the device may be easily inserted and mounted in place as well as contamination of the nostrils is reduced.
In the preferred embodiment, the undulations on the outer surface are ripples generally perpendicular to the slit opening. Hereby, it is ensured that the device will not fall out even during high physical activity, such as sporting activities.
In order to ensure a good fit inside the nostril, the tubular device is provided with a conical shape. By providing the device with a frusto-conical shape, the device is easy to insert, the second end being the smallest and with a handle in the lowermost first end, where a handle is preferably provided. This handle is preferably provided at the first end protruding radially outwards from the rim of the tubular device. The handle may be provided with a hole or similar means for attaching a rubber string, so that the device may be attached e.g. to the clothes of the user. Hereby, the risk of loosing the device is eliminated.
The protruding retention member is provided on the outer surface between the slit opening and the handle near said first end. It may be provided on the left side or the right side of the longitudinal slit opening, so that devices may be adapted to the left nostril and the right nostril, respectively.
Alternatively, the protruding retention member is provided on the outer surface underneath the handle so that the device is suitable for use in both nostrils and that the outwardly protruding handle assists in retaining the device in place in the nostril.
The device is most preferably provided with a shape generally corresponding to the inner volume of the nostril.
The invention is described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a nostril insertable device according to a first embodiment of the invention; figs. 2 and 3 show the device of a second embodiment of the invention in left-nostril and right-nostril embodiments, respectively; fig. 4 is a perspective view of a device according to the first embodiment from a different perspective; and fig. 5 is a view of a filter for mounting onto a device according to the invention.
In figures 1 and 4, a nostril insertable device according to a first embodiment of the invention is shown. The device consists of a tubular body 1 with a first end 4 and a second end 5, and which is slit longitudinally so that an elongated gap 6 is created extending along the entire tubular body 1. The tubular body 1 is provided with a rough outer surface 2 and a smooth inner surface 3. The rough outer surface 2 is preferably provided with annular ripples, as shown in the figures. Alternatively, the outer surface 2 could be matted or otherwise provided with a retaining surface structure. The tubular body 1 may be circular or oval in cross-section shape.
The smooth inner surface 3 ensures an unrestricted airflow through the device, when inserted in the vestibule of a nostril resulting an improvement in the oxygen inhalation through the nose.
At the lowermost first end 4, a handle 8 is provided extending outwardly from the tubular body 1. The handle 8 is provided with a hole 9 through which a piece of string or the like (not shown) may be secured, so that the nasal device is able to hang e.g. around the users neck when not in use. A protruding bulb 7 is provided on the outer surface 2 near the handle 8 (see fig. 2, 3 and 4). This bulb 7 is provided at a certain distance from the rim of the tubular body 1, so that the bulb 7 is positioned inside the nostril outer edge and serves as a retaining member for the device preventing the device from falling out of the nostril.
The device may be produced in several embodiments. As shown in figs. 2 and 3, the bulb 7 may be provided on either the left or the right side relative to the handle 8 for adapting the device to the left and right nostril, respectively.
The device is made in a resilient material, such as an inert biological polymer.
In fig. 5 a filter 10 is shown for mounting to the inside of the first end 4 of the device of fig. 4. The filter 10 includes a filer screen 13, which may be a HEPA-filter or any other suitable filter. It may be plain, convex or concave in shape. Aloing the rim of the filter screen 13, a number of mounting members 14 are provided for retaining the filer 10 in the end section 4 of the device. The filter is preferably also provided with a mounting handle 12 having a projecting member 11 which fits into the hole 9 of the handle 8 of the device. This projecting member 11 may be hollow so that a string (not shown) may be threaded there through.
The invention is described with reference to the above-described examples. However, by the invention it is realised that other embodiments may be provided without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the accompanying claims.
