Definitions
- the present invention relates to a deterring device.
- the invention relates to a deterring device used to scare birds.
- Prior art bird deterrents and scarers come in many different forms. Such devices are all in some way designed to keep birds away from areas or locations to which they are by nature attracted and which they tend to choose as preferred perches, feeding sites or roosts .
- a first category of deterrents used to keep nuisance birds away from designated areas includes static mechanical devices which cover the area to be protected and which may be nets or screens, or "combs" consisting of sets of metal spikes mounted on strips of material of variable length.
- a second category of deterrents used to keep nuisance birds away from designated areas is that of electrical devices. These usually consist of two flat or round electrical conductors laid side by side lengthways with a small gap between them in such a way that a bird alighting on them touches both conductors at the same time.
- the present invention therefore has for an object to overcome the above mentioned disadvantages through a deterring device, in particular for scaring birds, that can be used in large areas and that is practical, easy to install and economical.
- the present invention provides a deterring device, in particular for scaring birds, characterised in that it coi ⁇ pfises at least one rodlike element of flexible, elastic material and actuating means designed to impart undulating motion on the rod-like element at least starting from a static state of equilibrium.
- FIG. 2 shows a detail of the device of Figure 1, with some parts cut away and others in cross section in order to better illustrate others;
- FIG. 3 is a schematic perspective view from above of a second preferred embodiment of the deterring device according to the present invention.
- FIG. 4 is a Schematic perspective view from above of yet another preferred embodiment of the deterring device according to the present invention.
- the numeral 1 denotes in its entirety a bird dete ⁇ ring device made according to the present invention.
- the deterring device 1 comprises a box-shaped base 2 and a tubular mounting element 3 projecting vertically from it.
- An annular slider 4 is slidably engaged with the outside of the tubular mounting element 3.
- a plurality of arc-shaped rod-like elements 5 made of flexible elastic material project from the annular slider 4.
- the base 2 houses an electric motor 6 that has a drive output shaft 7.
- the output shaft 7 protrudes from the ⁇ iotor 6 and through the top of the box-shaped base 2.
- the shaft 7 has a splined shank
- the splined shank 8 of the output shaft 7 is designed to engage with, and transmit the motor's rotational drive to, a lower end 9a of a threaded rod 9 that extends lengthways inside the tubular mounting element
- the tubular mounting element 3 has two longitudinal slots 10 which allow the annular slider 4, which is engaged through respective internal threaded portions
- the slider 4 is made in two halves which are assembled together with the threaded rod 9.
- the base 3 houses a control unit 11 which drives the electric motor 6.
- Figure 3 illustrates another embodiment, labelled 1', of the deterring device 1 described above with reference to Figure 1.
- the box-shaped base 2 and the parts it houses, namely the electric motor 6 and the control unit 11, are the same as those illustrated in Figure 1.
- the motor 6 has a drive output shaft 7, which, in this embodiment, is connected to the bottom portion 12a of a disc-shaped platform 12.
- the disc-shaped platform 12 rotates about an axis A" together with the shaft 7 of the motor 6 and comprises a plurality of rod-like elements 5, like those described above, uniformly distributed on an upper face 13 of it.
- the deterring device comprises a plurality of the tubular rod-like elements 14 made of flexible elastic material and projecting from a central block 15.
- the tubular rod-like elements 14 are connected to the central block 15 by their bottom ends 14a. Starting from this end 14a, the tubular rod-like elements 14 extend upwards and bend under their own weight in such a way as to form a substantially arc-shaped curve.
- the central block 15 mounts a column 16 for supporting the tubular rod-like elements 14 which are attached to it by respective stays 17 projecting from an upper end l ⁇ a of the column 16 itself.
- the central block 15 is fixed on a base 18 by which the deterring device 1" can be mounted in a permanent position.
- the base 18 consists of a pole 19 with a pointed end 19a designed to be inserted into the ground.
- each tubular rodlike element 14 is hollow and in fluid communication, through a conduit 20, with a source of fluid under pressure, schematically represented as a block 21 in the illustration.
- An interposed valvular element 22, advantageously of the electrically operated type, is fitted between the pressurised fluid source 21 and the tubular rod-like elements 14 and is designed to control the flow of the pressurised fluid into the elements 14.
- the deterring device 1" also comprises a control unit, schematically represented as a block 23 in Figure 4, designed to control the valvular element 22.
- the tubular rod-like elements 14 present a plurality of outlet openings 24, which are distributed along their lengths and through which the pressurised fluid is discharged, the outlet openings 24 constituting means 25 for emitting the fluid.
- the electric motor 6 and the pressurised fluid source 21, acting in conjunction with the. valvular element 22 constitute actuating means 26 designed to impart an undulating motion on the rod-like elements 14 at least starting from a static state of equilibrium.
- the control units 11, 23 constitute, for the deterring devices 1, l r , 1", means 27 for driving the respective actuating means 26.
- the annular slider 4, the tubular mounting element 3, the disc-shaped platform 12 and the supporting column 16 constitute, in their entirety, means 28 for mounting the rod-like elements 5, 14.
- the threaded rod 9, the annular slider 4 and the discshaped platform 12 constitute, for the deterring devices 1 and 1', means 29 for connecting the rod-like elements 5 to the actuating means 28 and, in particular, to the electric motor 6.
- each of the embodiments of the deterring device described above, labelled 1, 1' and 1" may comprise a sound emitting element 30, which constitutes audible means used to produce sounds that contribute to scaring the birds away from the areas in the proximity of the deterring device 1 itself and which may be switched on even independently of the rod-like elements 5, 14.
- the outlet openings 24 may be equipped with second audible means designed to emit sounds when the fluid under pressure is discharged through the outlet openings 24 themselves.
- the control unit 11 activates the electric motor 6 which causes the threaded rod 9 to rotate rapidly for a certain length of time.
- the rotation of the threaded rod 9 makes the annular slider 4 move up or down thanks to the screwing or unscrewing action of its internal threaded portions 4a engaged with the threaded rod 9.
- the annular slider 4 imparts this substantially impulsive motion on the rod-like elements 5 fixed to it, causing the elements 5 to move in undulating fashion starting from a static state of equilibrium.
- This motion is comparable to that of a whip which undulates under the action of the initial impulsive force which gradually gets weaker until the whip returns to the state of equilibrium it had before the impulsive was applied. Birds in the vicinity of the deterring device 1 are scared by the sudden irregular movements of the rodlike elements 5 and thus keep away from the area surrounding the device 1.
- control unit 11 activates the electric motor 6 which causes the discshaped platform 12 to rotate rapidly for a certain length of time, dragging the rod-like elements 5 along with it and thus imparting on the latter, thanks to their length and flexibility, an undulating motion, represented in the illustration by the dashed lines.
- birds in the vicinity of the deterring device 1' are scared by the sudden irregular movements of the rod-like elements 5.
- the deterring device 1" is activated when the control unit 23 forces fluid under pressure into the tubular rod-like elements 14. Thanks to the flexibility of the rod-like elements 14 and the limited number of restraints on them, the fluid under pressure makes them move with undulating motion very similar to a whiplash, as described above and represented by the dashed lines in Figure 4.
- the fluid under pressure is discharged into the atmosphere through the outlet openings 24. The resulting jet of fluid under pressure may even strike the bird, without harming it in any way but creating alarm which scares it away.
- the flexible rodlike elements 14 have a first tubular portion which is close to the central blodk 15 and connected to the pressurised fluid source 21, and a second portion which is away from t ⁇ j-e central block and not connected to the pressurised fluid source.
- the undulating motion is therefore transmitted to the second portion by the first tubular portion driven by the pressurised fluid flow.
- control unit 11, 23 may comprise a timing device designed to activate the actuating means according to a defined time sequence and/or a sensor designed to detect the presence of a bird close to the deterring device 1, 1', 1 " itself, and/or an optical scanning device also designed to detect the presence of birds in the vicinity of the deterring device itself.
- These presence sensors which are not illustrated, may be of the laser or ultrasound type.
- timing, presence sensor and optical scanning devices are of customary type and therefore not described in any detail in terms of structural features .
- control unit 11, 23 may be connected to the optical scanning device or to the presence sensor. When birds are detected within the operating range of the device, a signal is sent to the control unit 11, 23 to start the actuating means 26.
- each tubular rodlike element has a respective valvular element, each valvular element being separately controlled by the control unit 23, so that the rod-like elements 14 are activated at different times according to predetermined sequences .
- the device 1" comprises one or more tubular elements 14 placed on plants, that is to say, on tree branches, hedges or vines.
- the tubular element or elements 14 may be partly fastened to the plant or to its supporting structures by customary fastening means, such as clips, for example, in order to limit and concentrate the undulating motion of the elements 14 in certain areas of the plant.
- the means 27 for controlling the deterring device 1, 1', 1" comprise a remote control allowing a user to switch on the actuating means 26 from a distance.
- the fluid under pressure which is referred to generically, advantageously consists of compressed air. It will be understood that the invention can be modified and adapted in several ways without thereby departing from the scope of the inventive concept. Moreover, all the details of the invention may be substituted by technically equivalent elements.
