1. An adjustable tongue suppressing bite block system, comprising: a bite block sized and configured for positioning in a person's mouth in order to maintain the person's mouth in an open position, said bite block having upper and lower surfaces for engagement with a person's upper and lower teeth when positioned within the person's mouth; a tongue suppressor adjustably attached to said bite block and oriented so as maintain the person's tongue within a confined region of the person's oral cavity when said bite block is positioned within the person's mouth; and adjustment means for selective lateral and vertical movement of said tongue suppressor relative to said bite block, said adjustment means comprising: at least one of a plurality of adjustment slots or adjustment recesses within said bite block; and at least one of a retention arm, adjustment prongs or an insertion peg within said tongue suppressor.
2. An adjustable tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim
1, wherein said bite block includes a plurality of slots, each of which is sized and configured to selectively receive therein a portion of said tongue suppressor in a manner so as to provide said selective lateral and vertical movement of said tongue suppressor relative to said bite block.
3. An adjustable tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim
2, at least a portion of said tongue suppressor being sized and configured for selective insertion into and retraction from said slots in a manner so as to provide selective lateral and vertical movement of said tongue suppressor relative to said bite block. 4. An adjustable tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim
2, wherein each of said plurality of slots is parallel to the other slots such that selectively removing said portion of said tongue depressor from one of said slots and inserting it into another of said slots results in vertical movement of said tongue depressor relative to said bite block. 5. An adjustable tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim
2, wherein said tongue suppressor is slidably connected to at least one of said slots in

a manner so as to provide for selective lateral extension and retraction of said tongue suppressor relative to said bite block.
6. An adjustable tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim 2, wherein at least one of said slots and a portion of said tongue depressor includes locking notches for temporarily locking said tongue depressor is a desired orientation relative to said bite block.
7. An adjustable tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim 2, wherein two of said plurality of slots are oriented in a criss-cross fashion so as to allow for selective horizontal and angular movement of said tongue suppressor relative to said bite block in addition to said selective lateral and vertical movement.
8. An adjustable tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim 2, wherein at least a region within said bite block defining said plurality of slots comprises a resilient material.
9. An adjustable tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim 1, wherein said bite block comprises a cavity and a plurality of adjustment ridges that define a plurality of adjustment recesses into which a portion of said tongue suppressor can be selectively inserted and retracted in a manner so as to provide said selective lateral and vertical movement of said tongue suppressor relative to said bite block. 10. An adjustable tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim
1, wherein said bite block includes a plurality of adjustment recesses and wherein said tongue suppressor includes prongs that are sized and configured so as to be selectively inserted and retracted from said adjustment recesses in order to provide said selective lateral and vertical movement of said tongue suppressor relative to said bite block. 11. An adjustable tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim
10, wherein said tongue suppressor includes at least one of (i) a retention arm that is selectively received within two of said adjustment recesses or (ii) adjustment prongs that are selectively received with a set of said adjustment recesses.
12. An adjustable tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim 1, wherein said upper and lower surfaces of said bite block comprise a plurality of ridges for enhanced retention of said bite block relative to the person's teeth when positioned within the person's mouth.
13. An adjustable tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim 1, wherein said bite block is angled in a manner so as to provide for a desired degree of opening or closure of the person's mouth, and wherein said upper and lower surfaces of said bite block comprise a resilient material. 14. An adjustable tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim
1, wherein said tongue suppressor includes a retention arm adjustably connected to said bite block and a flange extending downwardly from an end of said retention arm distal to said bite block.
15. A customizable bite block for use in maintaining a patient's mouth in an open position while providing unobstructed access to some of the patient's teeth during a dental procedure, comprising: a bite block body sized and configured so that the bite block fits entirely within one side of the patient's mouth when in use so as to provide unobstructed access to at least some teeth on an opposite side of the patient's mouth; an upper surface disposed on an upper side of said bite block body and adapted for engagement with a portion of the patient's upper teeth on the one side of the patient's mouth when the bite block is positioned within the patient's mouth; and a lower surface disposed on a lower side of said bite block body and adapted for engagement with a portion of the patient's lower teeth on the one side of the patient's mouth when the bite block is positioned within the patient's mouth, at least one of the upper and lower surfaces comprising an impression material that is able to make an impression of a portion of the patient's teeth on the one side of the patient's mouth.
16. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 15, the bite block body consisting essentially of the impression material.
17. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 15, a portion of the bite block body comprising the impression material and a portion of the bite block body comprising a rigid material that is not the impression material.

18. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 15, the upper and lower surfaces and the upper and lower sides of the bite block body comprising the impression material to a depth in a range of about 0.5 mm to about 1.5 cm.
19. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 15, the upper and lower surfaces and the upper and lower sides of the bite block body comprising the impression material to a depth in a range of about 2 mm to about 1 cm.
20. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 15, the upper and lower surfaces and the upper and lower sides of the bite block body comprising the impression material to a depth of about 3 mm to about 7 mm. 21. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 15, the impression material comprising at least one component selected from the group consisting of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers, polycaprolactone, polyesters, polyethylene, polypropylene, ultra low density polyethylene, polyalkylenes, waxes, gums, polyurethanes, polyesters, open cell foams, and closed cell foams. 22. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 15, the impression material being substantially non-plastically deformable at room temperature and becoming plastically deformable when heated to a temperature greater than room temperature.
23. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 22, the impression material becoming plastically deformable when heated to a temperature greater than body temperature.
24. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 23, the impression material being plastically deformable at a temperature between about 40° C. to about 110° C. 25. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 23, the impression material being plastically deformable at a temperature between about 50° C. to about 90° C.
26. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 23, the impression material being plastically deformable at a temperature between about 55° C. to about 90° C.
27. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 15, the impression material being plastically deformable at room temperature or body temperature.

29. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 15, the impression material being resilient at a temperature below which the impression material first becomes plastically deformable.

31. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 15, the impression material comprising a curable material that is initially plastically deformable but which becomes non-plastically deformable upon curing.
32. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 31, the impression material comprising at least one of a light, heat, or chemically curable material.
33. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 31, the impression material comprising at least one of an alginate, acrylate, methacrylate, silicone, epoxy or polyether.

A customizable bite block as defined in claim 15, further comprising: a pair of upper shoulders extending from the upper side of the bite block body and defining an upper channel within which the upper surface is at least partially disposed; and a pair of lower shoulders extending from the lower side of the bite block body and defining a lower channel within which the lower surface is at least partially disposed.
35. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 34, at least one of the upper or lower channels being bounded by substantially parallel opposing interior walls of corresponding upper or lower shoulders.

A customizable bite block as defined in claim 34, at least one of the upper or lower channels being bounded by opposing interior walls of corresponding upper or lower shoulders, at least a portion of the interior walls being configured so that they at least partially converge toward a respective upper or lower side of the bite block body.

37. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 36, the upper or lower shoulders defining a corresponding channel that is substantially V-shaped, U-shaped, or step-walled.
38. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 36, at least a portion of the interior walls comprising the impression material.

A customizable bite block as defined in claim 15, at least one of the upper or lower surfaces including an impression of a portion of the patient's teeth, the impression material being adapted so as to maintain the impression after removing the bite block from the patient's mouth. 40. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 15, further including a tongue suppressor attached to the bite block body and oriented so as maintain the patient's tongue within a confined region of the patient's oral cavity when the bite block is positioned within the patient's mouth.
41. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 40, the tongue suppressor being adjustably attached to the bite block body in a manner so as to permit at least one of lateral or vertical adjustments of the tongue suppressor relative to the bite block.
42. A customizable bite block as defined in claim 40, the tongue suppressor being anatomically configured so as to wrap around and cover at least a portion of the top, side and underside of the patient's tongue.
43. A method of making a customized bite block for use in maintaining a patient's mouth in an open position while providing unobstructed access to some of the patient's teeth during a dental procedure, the method comprising: providing a bite block having an upper surface adapted to engage a portion of the patient's upper teeth and a lower surface adapted to engage a portion of the patient's lower teeth, at least one of the upper or lower surfaces of the bite block comprising an impression material; placing the bite block into one side of the patient's mouth while the impression material is plastically deformable so that an opposite side of the patient's mouth remains unobstructed by the bite block; and

making an impression of at least a portion of the patient's teeth on the one side of the patient's mouth in at least one of the upper or lower surfaces comprising the plastically deformable impression material.
44. A method of making a customized bite block as defined in claim 43, wherein the impression material becomes plastically deformable at a temperature greater than room temperature, the method further comprising heating the impression material so as to become plastically deformable prior to making an impression of at least a portion of the patient's teeth.
45. A method of making a customized bite block as defined in claim 44, wherein the impression material is heated to a temperature between about 40° C. and about 110° C.
46. A method of making a customized bite block as defined in claim 44, wherein the impression material is heated to body temperature.
47. A method of making a customized bite block as defined in claim 43, wherein the impression material is plastically deformable at room temperature.
48. A method of making a customized bite block according to claim 47, the impression material comprising a curable material, the method further comprising curing the impression material in order to render it substantially non-plastically deformable after making an impression of at least a portion of the patient's teeth. 49. A customized bite block manufactured according to any of claims 43-

50. A tongue suppressor for use in combination with a dental bite block, comprising: a retention bar configured at a first end to mechanically engage corresponding structure in a dental bite block and to transversely cover at least a portion of an upper surface of a patient's tongue when in use; a side flange extending laterally from a second end of the retention bar and configured so as to engage at least a portion of a side of the patient's tongue when in use, at least a portion of the side flange being substantially perpendicular to at least a portion of the retention bar; and

a sublingual portion extending from the side flange and configured so as to engage at least a portion of a lower surface of the patient's tongue when in use.
51. A tongue suppressor as defined in claim 50, the retention bar being substantially planar.
52. A tongue suppressor as defined in claim 50, the first end of the retention bar having a cross section configured to engage a corresponding recess having a substantially similar cross section of a dental bite block.
53. A tongue suppressor as defined in claim 52, the cross section comprising at least one of a square, rectangular, circle, or ellipse.
54. A tongue suppressor as defined in claim 50, at least one of the side flange or sublingual portion being at least partially curved.
55. A tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim 54, the side flange and sublingual portion being at least partially curved in order to anatomically cradle a patient's tongue when in use.
56. A tongue suppressor as defined in claim 50, at least one of the side flange or sublingual portion having a width corresponding to a lengthwise direction of a tongue when in use that is greater than a corresponding width in the lengthwise direction of the retention arm. 57. A tongue suppressor as defined in claim 50, at least one of the side flange or sublingual portion defining at least one recess through which fluids or debris may be aspirated during use.
58. A tongue suppressor as defined in claim 50, further including a saliva aspiration port disposed on at least one of the retention bar or side flange and at least one aspiration hole disposed in a side of at least one side flange or sublingual portion in a fluid communication with the saliva aspiration port.
59. A tongue suppressor as defined in claim 58, the aspiration port communicating with the at least one aspiration hole by means of one or more lumens disposed within the at least the side arm of the tongue suppressor. 60. A tongue suppressor as defined in claim 50, further including a plurality of ridges disposed on the sublingual portion.

61. A tongue suppressor as defined in claim 50, the sublingual portion comprising a forward curved section configured so as to anatomically conform to the curved tip of a patient's tongue.
62. A tongue suppressing bite block system comprising: a dental bite block; and a tongue suppressor according to any of claims 50-61 attached to the dental bite block.
63. A tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim 62, the dental bite block including at least one recess configured to receive therein at least a portion of the first end of the retention bar of the tongue suppressor.
64. A tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim 62, the dental bite block and tongue suppressor being detachably connected together.
65. A tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim 62, the dental bite block and tongue suppressor being fixedly connected together. 66. A tongue suppressing bite block system as defined in claim 62, the dental bite block comprising at least one tooth engagement surface comprising a resiliently deformable material.
