Abstract

A liquid crystal display device which has a first substrate and second substrate, liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the first and second substrates, and drive section with a normally-closed type reflectance-impressed voltage characteristic and a normally-closed type transmissivity-impressed voltage characteristic. The first substrate has a common electrode, an upper polarizing plate and upper phase plate on the top, and the second substrate has a reflection electrode connected to an active element and a lower polarizing plate and a lower phase plate on the bottom. The liquid crystal layer has a twist angle of 40° to 65° inclusive with the retardation in the reflection display section ranging from 230nm to 300μm inclusive and that in the transmission display section larger than that in the reflection display section. A wide display is obtained which is bright under an optical environment from dark to direct sunlight with a wide range of color reproducibility.
