Definitions
- This invention relates to a lockable base for an article for locking the article to a stable surface, and an article, which includes such a base.
- a lockable base for locking an article to a surface
- the base including: a first part having attaching formations for attaching the first part to a surface; a second part configured to form part of the underside of the article, the first or second part forming an enclosure; and a locking mechanism located in the enclosure for locking the first and second part to each other.
- the surface may be a stable surface such as the surface of a floor, desk or the like.
- the article may be any article, the invention is especially useful for locking a central processing unit of a personal computer, a computer server and the like to a surface. Specifically, the invention is especially useful if the processing unit is in the form of an upright tower case type.
- the first part may include an attaching formation, which may be part of, or attachable to, a stable surface or an underside of an article, and an engaging formation for engaging a locking member of a locking mechanism.
- the locking member may be a pin of a pin type locking mechanism and the formation may define an aperture for engagingly receiving the pin.
- the attaching formation may be a plate.
- the plate may form a wall.
- the second part may be part of, or have attaching formations and may be attachable to, a stable surface or an underside of an article and may define an enclosure for enclosing a locking mechanism.
- a wall forming the underside, in use, of the enclosure may have an aperture defined therein for receiving the engaging formation of the first part into, and locating the formation for engaging the locking member of a locking mechanism located in the enclosure.
- the second part may include a locking mechanism located ⁇ in ⁇ the enclosure.
- the locking mechanism may be of the pin type.
- the formations for fixing the first and or second parts to the stable surface or underside of the article may be holes for receiving screws, bolts, rivets and the like.
- the screws, bolts, rivets and the like may be located in the enclosure.
- the base may be dimensioned such that when the article is locked to a surface, the underside of the article is close to the stable surface and the periphery of the surface of the underside of the article is larger than, and extends beyond, the periphery of the upper surface of the enclosure such that the screws, bolts, rivets and the like, cannot be reached and undone with conventional tools.
- the first and second parts may include complementary locating formations for locating the first part relative to the second part.
- the locating formations may be one or more pins on one part and corresponding one or more apertures for receiving the pins on the other part.
- the first part may include walls, which extend transversely from the plate, is complementary to and fit over the enclosure defined by the second part. The walls may fit over the attaching formations of the second part such that the formations cannot be tampered with when the article is locked to a surface.
- Figure 1 shows schematically a three dimensional view of a first part of a lockable base, in accordance with the invention
- Figure 2 shows schematically a three dimensional view of a second part of a lockable base, in accordance with the invention
- Figure 3 shows schematically a bottom plan view of the lockable base, in accordance with the invention.
- Figure 4 shows schematically a side view of the lockable base, in use, in accordance with the invention.
- the lockable base for locking an article such as central processing unit (CPU) of the upright tower case type, to a surface, in accordance with the invention is generally indicated by reference numeral 10.
- the lockable base 10 includes a first part 12 having attaching formations 14 in the form of holes formed in a wall 16 for receiving screws (not shown) for attaching the first part 12 to a stable surface of a desk top 17.
- the lockable base 10 further includes a second part 18 configured to form part of the underside of a CPU 19 and a locking mechanism 20 in the form of a pin type locking mechanism (shown in figures 3 and 4) for locking the first 12 and second part 18 to each other.
- the first part includes a plate forming the wall 16, which is attachable to the surface 17, and an engaging formation 22 in the form of an aperture for engagingly receiving a locking member in the form of a pin 24 of the pin type locking mechanism 20.
- the second part 18 has attaching formations in the form of holes 26 for receiving screws (not shown) and is attachable to the underside of the CPU 19, to form part thereof, and defines an enclosure for enclosing the locking mechanism 20.
- a wall 28 forming the underside, in use, of the enclosure has an aperture 30 defined therein for receiving the engaging formation 22 of the first part 12 into, and locating the formation 22 for engaging the pin 24 of the locking mechanism 20 located in the enclosure.
- the first part 12 can be fixed to the underside, to form part thereof, of the CPU 19 and the second part 18 to the stable surface 17.
- the first 12 and second part 18 include complementary locating formations for locating the first par 12 relative to the second part 18.
- the locating formations are two pins 32 on the first part 12 and corresponding apertures 34 for receiving the pins 32.
- the first part 12 includes walls 36, which extend transversely from the wall 16, is complementary to and fit over the enclosure defined by the second part 18.
- the walls 36 fit over and enclose the attaching formations 26 of the second part 18 such that the formations 26 cannot be tampered with when the CPU 19 is locked to a surface 17.
