Abstract

Modified apoaequorin polypeptides that exhibit enhanced glowing are provided, as are functional fragments of the polypeptides, and polynucleotides encoding the polypeptides and functional fragments. A modified glowing aequorin photoprotein also is provided. In addition, methods of using the glowing apoaequorins and encoding polypeptides to detect, for example, the presence of calcium ions in a sample, or to identify agents that effect the movement of calcium ions from one compartment to another are provided, as are methods for identifying functional changes in cells associated with changes in calcium ion concentrations.
