Abstract

A method and apparatus for processing drill cuttings to remove oil. The apparatus includes reactors (116 and 108) which have internal agitators (210). The process includes the steps of mixing the drill cuttings with emulsion breaker (sulfonate or sulfonic acid) ; strong mineral acid (H2SO4) to lower pH below 0 ; and subsequent addition of alkaline earth compound (CaO) generates heat which vaporizes oil and water.
